it might be that the writer and EP didn't want to do doctor who without him, hence he could strike this sort of deal. in the end doctor who this time around is quite good, kinda like a kid's version of the x-files but with some nice extras.
anyway it might be a nive trend to have a new doctor for each season
it'll be interesting to know what makes west wing so left wing in your view. if it was right wing would you expect the POTUS to be shooting endangered species in the oval office and all his advicers to be born again christians? i look at west wing as a really good science fiction show, i also expect the POTUS to behave like that whether they were right or left wing. i don't really see anything that POTUS does on the show that would immediately brand him as a north-eastern liberalm but then i'm not that smart
well, do you like "the West Wing"? do you like "Six Feet Under"? If no then i know where you're coming from: You have no taste in well scripted, well acted television.
No for me the new BS is probably some of the best TV out there. I have no way of knowing if either of us is more right than the other. But I do know that if this wasn't a science fiction show it'll be up for a few Emmy's.
>> There's absolutely no evidence that human minds have magical access to truths which formal systems don't
What has Penrose have to do with it? His little "quantum computers in our brain" has nothing to do with what I said. I gave you my sources: Cohen, Turning and Godel. That's it. Ask a logician if you don't believe me. All of these guys showed the limitations of formal systems (my bit about humans is irrelevant - and not very funny to begin with).
ok...so what does it mean then? This is getting frustrating it's like some country club. If the definition is no longer what the words stand for then it would be nice if the "hip people" can tell us.
come on, Coupling was fine (written by the guy that did The Press Gang). "Two pints.." on the other hand is as crap as British TV sitcoms go (I think they wanted to make a love child of Spaced and Men Behaving badly but got side tracked into...well nothing)
you didn't actually read what i was saying. anyway i heard it was Graham Norton's voice and the audience from Strictly Come Disco Fever Dancing or whatever, that was being heard over the episode.
i'm watching the first 5 minutes and there is some cross talk. I can hear audience applause and some announcers during the, now fucked up, suspenceful bit. Someone at the Beeb is going to get fired.
when you do end up at university make sure that you
1. take a full undergraduate course where you need to write essays every month or two (better to learn to write at university than at work - your lecturer is more tolerant than your clients/boss)
2. get a lot of diverse friends so you can participate in things like theatre. movie making, radio...just in case you have some talent there.
3. try and do as much work/study during "office hours", the discipline will do you wonders when you get older, and leave your nights free for other activities (though you might ony be able to do this for the first 2 years)
4. understand all of lecture n BEFORE you have lecture n+1
what is the *legal* situation. is it state-by-state or are there some federal laws. For a comparison, in Belgium you give six weeks notice and if they fire you then they have to pay for it (it's like everyone getting a golden parachute deal). For instance, over 5 years of employment is between 6-8 months of pay.
Crap. Over and over again the anti-Apple cult needs to be reminded that a lot of Apple uses use Mac OS X as their second operating system. Sorry for bursting your little bubble there. I know it must be hard to get your brain around something other than games machines (is that Slashdot code for porn or something). Apple is the biggest distrubutor of *NIX in the world. That's why Slashdot likes them. Deal with it.
but then they forget to add their country or postalcode and you can't ship the product. No the author is stuck in a hard place. He has to make sure that the address is good enough for a shipment to the country without pissing off the user forcing them to, say, enter there US state when they live Japan like so many forms are (well it's a lot better in the last 5 years I admit)
to be honest all of the Star Wars movies had very bad acting. But if you look closely (actually hear) you can see/hear how bad the voice syncing is (actually it's not that bad, visually). But due to every voice being dubbed the acting just gets thrown out the window. So you can have great actors like Ewen McGregor or Harrison Ford in it but it's ruined by the voice dubbing that no great actor and acting can hide.
And to be blunt I don't think George Lucas knows how to direct actors. Sorry but just a cursory glance at Jake Lloyd's performances screams out "RETAKE!"
the Oort cloud is way, way further out than (it's roughly 0.5-2 light years out) where Voyager is. And it's very, very sparse - whatever that is out there. No Voyager is just in the cold vacuum of space, trickling a bit of data back since it's power source is barely keeping some of the instruments warm.
What everyone is hoping is that it will try and find some of the boundaries between our solar system (well our sun really) and the rest of this galaxy.
I do agree, but if take into account the amount of money the university (either via individual faculty or department budgets or as a percent of gross university budget) spends on journal subscriptions then the savings on these could outway the cost of extra money for grants.
I'm not saying it'll be easy, but it would be easier since one of the first things to go is the library budgets (good for the shoet term, bad for the long).
But to be honest most people publish when they are *active* researchers and we all know that active *researchers* have to get governmen/business grants. It's the only way to survive. Non-active researchers (ie mostly admin/teaching staff), who are usually the first to get their budgets cut anway, won't be part of this deal.
whoops 80-90% university might be a bit steep for journals from the IEEE. But for companies they can afford a few thoussand a year to pay for the few articles they submit (few compared to a university)
80-90% of the papers are from university (tenured) people. The department can easily afford to pay for each academic to submit their papers. The savings the faculty will get by not paying for the subscriptions to journals will easily compensate (journal expenses are just outright robbery - not the journal's fault, but the publishers). Academics can easily add a few thousands to each and every grant proposal to help the department along. Cross-subsides from this and the library savings will probably make this revenue neutral.
It would also be nice if the journal will wavier some fees for independent researchers. Also, to reiterate, most grants will eventually have a little textbox to stipulate how much is needed for "journal submission payments".For the first 10 years or so it might be a hard sell, but eventually full access journals (including for the public who pay for it all anyway) paid by research grants and universities is really the only way to go.

It was a pleasure to listen in. Shows everyone the power of the internet community and the original reason why we have slashdot. Thanks!
Now, I'm off to hug someone.
