  1. Re:must...avoid...reality tv... on The Sims Survivor · · Score: 1
I've seen only 1/2 an episode of survivor and no other reality tv shows for one simple reason...they suck. Go ahead and watch some other people live their lives instead of living yours...it's easier that way.
What an ignorant statement. Shows such as Survivor are game shows. Primetime dramas are more about watching somebody's life. People watch West Wing to see life in the White House, ER to see how the stress of being an emergency doctor affects the characters' lives, or The Practice for a glimpse at trials and their toll on victims and lawyers. At least reality contestants aren't just actors.

And if an extra hour a week of TV a week has that big of an effect on your life...

Telephones are useful items that get abused. Would you fight back against telemarketing by not ever giving out your number anywhere? That defeats the whole purpose of the phone. Should we not drive cars because people use them as getaway vehicles, or stop riding buses because terrorists blow them up?

There is a point where you need to stop sheltering yourself from the world and find a different way to fight or tolerate abuse of useful resources.

  3. Re:Could this help get HDTV going? on High Definition DVD · · Score: 1

I think the HDTV problem will take care of itself. Ten years ago most people weren't online. Why pay to go online if no one you know has e-mail or instant messenging? Yet now, somehow mostly everyone is online. A possibility is that people will slowly buy new HDTVs when their old analog sets need to be replaced. Might as well be prepared for the future and jump the wagon now instead of buying a second set later, right?

Plenty of people share lossless music in Shorten (SHN) files. Read it about it here. Songs can be compressed to about 1/2 to 2/3 of the size of the WAV -- and for a perfect copy, it's well worth the not-too-significant download on a broadband connection. Smashing Pumpkins bootlegs are illegal (I think), but there are many bands that encourage this (Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Grateful Dead, and hundreds more) and I had no problems running a server at my school last year, sucking up about 4TB of bandwidth during the school year. If you keep it legal (not too hard), schools generally don't have much of a problem -- if they do, they should be capping people.

I know the head buyer for my area's TW HQ, and a couple weeks ago he mentioned this, adding that the models they've narrowed it down to will mean about $5 a month to subscribers. Not too shabby at all, though I'd expect them to charge more like $10 because a lot of people would probably pay it.

Microsoft bashing is one of the main topics Slashdot exists to serve.
I don't entirely believe that, but if it is, I think the users posting swayed it that way. I'm a Windows user (tried Linux three times, now thinking of a Mac), and I come here to read interesting news about science and computing, as well as people's thoughts on it. There is no reason to alienate a significant portion of the readers. It's one thing if other users complain about Windows, but if the moderators -- the people that run the site -- start to mod up anti-Windows jokes and mod-down Windows-supportive comments, well that doesn't speak too highly of Slashdot as a dignified news/discussion source.

I'm not even into electronic music and I can't get enough of these guys. Check out their latest, "Come With Us" for great dancing beats, or "Dig Your Own Hole" for much deeper, well-written journeys. It's all electronic, but it's not just simple, droning beats; there are a lot of carefully-crafted sounds. It's mostly intrumental with a couple vocal tracks on each album. They also put on the best live performance I've ever seen (out of about 40 shows). I really think listening to them will add a lot to your knowledge of the genre and maybe help you persue your own music.

  16. Re:Control vs Society on Spielberg Denied Crack at Star Wars · · Score: 1

SW is different than C&H. Lucas has gotten worse and worse at making more SW movies, while Watterson never got worse at making C&H strips. He quit before it got bad, which really preserved the integrity of the strip. He also prevented any marketting (plush dolls, lunchboxes, etc), and the result is being considered one of the great comics of all time. If Lucas keeps making worse movies, it won't be seen the same light in 20 years; if he hands it off to someone else, it loses a bit of magic because it's no longer one man's dream, and it's unlikely another person can keep the same spirit in the series. Lucas' only two choices are to stop now, or to make good movies.

Suppose a seller sells $1000 worth of goods per month which he paid $500 for to begin with (pretty average profit rate on Ebay). He will make $500/month, or $12,000 per year. Who can live off of $12,000/year as their full time job? I sell a small amount of goods on ebay, and just keeping track of 20 auctions at once is quite a handful; I could imagine it eating up 30-40 hours per week, which wouldn't leave any time for a second job.

  21. Scaring may not be the best... on Making Users Back Up Important Data? · · Score: 1

Having someone completely lose their data more or less just pisses them off. Where I work, somebody with too many priviledges deleted hundreds of hours of video from the main server. Was it backed up? Of course not. Did they implement a back up solution? Not yet. But the thing is, the video still existed on the original tapes. Many workers had to spend hours and hours reconverting all of the movies. I think that will leave a bigger impression on them than losing a file or fearing that they will lose everything.
