    I think GNU/Linux used to be more like using a n-axis milling machine (kit) to cut wood: You can cut it nearly any way you like but there's a lot of know-how and set-up involved; That was, until Ubuntu. Now, if they could make global network proxy settings Just Work(TM) e.g. for Synaptic.

    Something interesting I've seen at Manly beach (Sydney.au) rather than permanently installed lockers is a mobile locker block with an attendant (they don't move them around during the day but it makes it easier to set-up/strike). It seems like a pretty good business idea -- they have commercial sponsorship as well as locker fees.

    Some company spends $20k for a full page ad in a magazine, how much of that came back in sales? No one knows. All you need to do in this instance is publish a unique phone number in the ad and you'll know exactly what the direct response is, it's the indirect response (goodwill etc.) that's hard to measure.

    The casino by law cannot pick up change off the floor nor can they keep any money that was put into a machine but the machine didnt register. I was in Sydney casino once and a machine bust open and spilled thousands of $1 coins on the floor, damned straight the staff picked up the change; security went nuts.

    In the 80s, HyperCard team at Apple used to regularly run their sources through a Pascal formatter. The code, in a friend's words, "looked ironed." That's the second time in two days I've seen HyperCard mentioned here; I wish Apple would open the source.

    I have trouble believing that accounting typically involves setting out abstract theorems and proving them. That depends how creative your accountant is. Whether the Tax Man will accept the proof is another matter.

    If ever there was a practice that deserved it's own brand new circle in hell, it's playing commercials before movies. I specifically go to movies late just to skip the commercials. Which you're perfectly entitled to do. Mute the TV during ads, show up late to the cinema (here in .au we have allocated seats), use Adblock on your browser, get a media player that ignores command restrictions. I don't like crappy commercials as much as the next guy, but saying these ppl belong in hell is a bit harsh; You're free to ignore commercials.

    "parents don't matter" is obviously a load of bollocks; I'd like to see her try convincing anyone that an abusive (or any other type of relationship really but this would be the most obvious) parent isn't going to have any effect on a child.
