"Why not use a decentralized naming system based on public key crypto, and get rid of verisign and the rest of the leeches?"
Why don't we transition to a result based beta system of rotating coffee cups. The resulting warning sig would effect the general ground plane in a way as to generate an obtuse reactive framework.
"The average user is on dial-up and is not amused after waiting 30 seconds for an ad page. wasted bandwidth."
The "average user" does not know what "bandwidth" is, nor care about it. And, the "average user" does not care about getting VeriSign's "SiteFinder" page, in fact most "average users" will use it when they are dropped there. Don't confuse the "average user" with the "average Slashdot reader".
It's one thing to bandy about lines like "child labor" and "forced to work 12 hour days" and such, but the pictures don't lie. It may very well be that there are many many sweat shops in China, but how can you say this is one? I think some people have an ax to grind and will avoid the facts at all costs to make their point. For Christ's sake, look at the pictures: Any 12 year olds working there? Please. There are many factories in the US that are far worse then this.
I have a very difficult time understanding how VeriSign stays in business at all considering there are much better options for both domain registration and secure certificates.
John Leutza, director of the California Public Utilities Commission's telecommunications division. "They sure look like a phone company in nearly every regard," he said in an interview Tuesday. "This will be California's policy, going forward."
Regulators are typically of the same general mind set as monopolists, and in an earlier day they would probably all have worked for railroads. But while VoIP offers some of the same services as telephone, there are significant differences in the technology, as pointed out in many posts here. I don't think the current laws will support the CPUC position, but just like chumming for fish, where there is money to be had, the politicos will be swarming.
VoIP has a big potential to cut into the bottom line of some DEEP POCKET telephone companies, and you can bet these people's money will grease the pockets of the politicos in California.
I spend 8+ hours a day on something that was 'scientifically impossible' less than a century ago, supersonic flight...
8 hours a day??? Most actively flying Air Force pilots don't spend 8 hours a day fly supersonic, even if they *did* fly 8 hours a day... And, the Concorde has been grounded. But, reasonable Troll attempt.
How, exactly, were they crushed? If their readers left their paper to read one of the "big corporate owned..." outlets, then they could not secure advertisers, then how is it the fault of those big corporate interests? If the public really wanted those independent papers, they would support them. Its called free-market at work (or, democracy expressed through the market).
OK, so translating this to the Amazon situation, Fuck all the small book retailers, if anyone wanted to shop at a small local bookstore, Amazon would not have been allowed to dominate the book sales industry. If people didn't want Comcast, they wouldn't be the only cable company in my area. Oh, and how about this one? If people where not just head over hells for Windowz, Microsoft would not be the carnivorous monster they are?
This ratio you talk about, it can not be true. Before today, by "karma" has been "good" and better. But yet make some comment that is not "kiss-ass-linux socialist crap" and as Ermil says, "BAM" the offtopic / flamebait. Quicker than snot on a hot day. Tell me it's "random" and then please sign over your house and car, your bridge is waiting in Brookland
On the other hand, no one said this was a "free" forum. So it is to be expected that VA Software would use the strong arm of the enter key to blacklist and smite those with alturante opinions. It's a free country, after all, and nobody makes people come to Slashdot.
The problem is the "mods" are Prima Donnas. And don't fool your self, it's Michael and Timothy acting like little tin Gods here at the all-powerful Slashdot.
Suprise! Most people WORK for a living, and of those who do, many actually want to be PAID for writing code.
Most Slashdotters live with their parents, so creating wealth is not a concept they understand. For example, the concept of Open Source. They are cool with it because they don't have to pay the rent.
Likewise, they are cool with ripping off the RAII via P2P because.... They don't have to pay the rent.
So really, this will have no effect on SiteFinder, because VeriSign will still be running the registry, and pimping it for their benefit.

And, where does Intel make all their chips? All in the good old U. S. of A.? No....
what I say it is, *IF* you want my product. Read the EULA. Don't like it? Don't agree to it.

.com and .net domains through VariSign will now cost $699.
Read the parent post closely. It's a troll.

That's a gnu-candidate thank you.
That's "GNU/Candidate".

Take a look at the blood fest going on in Seattle between the Seattle PI and the Seattle Times.

Arrogant slashbots at work. At least I have a life!
It's a Slashbot. Come on, always here and First Post? Slashbot. Just like the story.

Man... I was snickering all the way until the end, then BAM, like a blow to the side of the head from a mugger in downtown Portland... The "N" word.
I suspect that my post, too, will be modded "offtopic" and "flamebait" too, but then Slashdot is SOOOOO "PC". GNU/Linux PC, that is...
Daily!

Personally, I think this is funny. Not the joke itself (which is weak), but the fact it was modded "troll". Was it too close to home? LOL!
