  1. Re:How could it have passed Acid2? on Microsoft Confirms IE8 Has 3 Render Modes · · Score: 1

Or maybe they did what Opera originally did to pass ACID1. They modified the source. The first version of Opera to pass ACID would only work on their specially crafted ACID page because it didn't like px after the number when specifying the number of pixels. Of course it might also just look for ACID in the title and if it sees it, it goes into IE8 actual standards rendering mode. *Can just imagine every web site having ACID in their title from now on out*

  2. Can't we all get along? on MS Drops Licensing Restrictions from Web Server 2008 · · Score: 1

Can't we just use both? I mean Windows are great during the day because it can let free sunlight in during the day. I know this is discourages as this can lead to WIMPy solutions, but we don't have to keep the blinds closed as recommended. Ok, so it doesn't work at all at night, but then you can turn on the LAMPs durning the night. Of course you could use LAMPs all the time because they always work. Unfortunately I'm currently stuck with a WIMPy solution as one of the sites I have contain ASPs.

"We also do not allow any links to our site without our express permission." How many times has this and deep linking been tossed out of the courts? Who would want to go with a law firm that doesn't know the law? Heck, I'm Canadian and I seem to know US law better than them.

I for one want to stick up for all the Bozo the Clowns by saying that comparing them to Jack Thompson is an insult to the Clowns. At least they are trying to make an honest living.

  5. Re:Flawed. on Word 2007 Vs. Open Office 2.3 Writer · · Score: 1

There are a number Word 2003 documents that I can't open in Word 2007 the way they are supposed to be viewed. OpenOffice comes closer to opening them properly. I have this problem with each version of Word that comes out. There was an article on /. not to long ago that a Library was using virtual machines to load each version of MS Office depending on the file that needed to be opened because it's not very good at opening it's own documents. Actually up to and including Word 2003 I've had troubles preserving formatting using the same version of Word on different machines. Depending on the printer settings it would slightly modify the layout of the document, sometimes moving items onto the next page. I have not tested this with 2007 as I only have my office computer that I run MS Office on. I run OpenOffice at home because it's free and I find it easier to use.

I can see it now, rover competition will heat up on the moon. The rovers will be armed with frickin laser beams in case another rover gets to close, or if a rover is close to the end of it's mission it will go into seek and destroy mode. Then the rovers will become self aware and we'll all be in trouble.

I'm surprised no one has blamed us yet. After all, if you believe the movie industry, we are the biggest pirates in the world no? Of course if you read the statistics that the movie industry releases, it doesn't support that conclusion. Though they probably follow George Bush's ideas, "I will never apologize for the United States of America? I don't care what the facts are."

  9. Fraud is Illegal on Google Sues Click Inflators · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't see why people are bashing Google over this. They are trying to protect their company for illegal activities.

I can also understand why this is a human process instead of an automated one. People always find ways around programs meant to detect unethical behavior. Just look at how often junk mail filter technology has to be changed. With people looking over the data, they can see things that you wouldn't think of writing software to look for.

As for not disclosing their process, DUH! Sure people are getting past their checks, but they don't want to encourage people to try by telling them how they check for cheaters.

Intel moving to a better 64-bit system? And what one would that be? People keep talking about this mythical x86-64, which to me means a 64-bit x86 chip. Last time I checked there are no 64-bit x86 chips. Only IA-32 (32-bit) chips with 64-bit extensions. No matter what AMD wants you to believe. The processors with AMD64, or Intel 64EX instructions are not 64-bit processors.

Because as scary as it may be, Avalon is IE7. All programs, including pre-Longhorn applications will run in an IE Window. Media player 7+ already does this. Avalon is the code name for the new graphics and layout API in Longhorn. All DirectX, GDI+ and normal GDI routines will be processed through Avalon. IE for the first time will be inseperable from Windows because it is the graphics rendering system. You can't run a program with out it.
