He's right. At home, you don't feel pressured by deadlines or customers demanding a product. At home, when there's no one to answer to, you can spend years completing a lisp interpreter.
Actually, I think the optimal number of people working on a project is closer to 3. meetings last no longer than they need to and no one says the word "commitee".
In my entire life, I've never met any windows user who felt compelled to switch the mouse buttons. There's not really a practical reason to do this. I can assure you now, there will be apple users who purchase this mouse and configure it for a single button and it will piss off everyone else who has to use their computer.
I actually think this is a really bad idea from a usability standpoint. While it seems like a good idea for people to be able to change the number of mouse buttons, it's a terrible idea when you're using someone else's apple and they have it configured differently. Unlike mice that have obvious buttons and scroll wheels, this one looks the same no matter how its configured, so you can't know if right-clicking is enabled (or disabled) without sitting down and becoming frustrated with it.
It's about as innovative as a keyboard that has no letters, so that you can switch between standard and dvorak layouts.
I believe part of this is due to the fact that python doesn need lambda expressions. It allows a function to be defined within a lexical scope to be returned from a function. While the function technically does have a name, it's inaccessible by name in the global context, essentially making it anonymous.
Although Lisp is syntactically the most expressive language around, it is lacking certain core features that are widely available in {insert language here}. Part of this is due to the abstractness of Lisp, like the fact that it lacks a good posix interface. Other things are just items that we've come to expect from dynamic languages, like XML parsing, or regular expressions.
If you compare the standard libraries that are built into python with those in Lisp, you'll notice a huge difference. Python comes with a lot of useful utility classes/methods/functions whereas Lisp comes with a lot of syntactic fluff.
Apple already doesn't treat customers like scum the way Microsoft does (which I appreciate; I'm honest, but I don't like the assumption that I am not). I think this is just Apple's already-known plans to prevent the OS from not running on anything they haven't sold as a Mac.
Obviously you're not an ipod owner. I was unlucky enough to win an ipod mini as a door prize to a campus event. There was a problem with the firmware and I tried to download a recent copy to replace it. Unfortunately, their firmware restoration software only works with windows (2000 or XP) and OS X, neither of which I have access to. If I could download a copy of the firmware, i could easily restore it, but they make it quite challenging to get a hold of the firmware because users were hacking it to put in custom icons. So, in order to protect their firmware-driven business model from the horrible hax0rz who were patching their firmware with hello kitty icons, apple has decided to treat everyone as a criminal, making the firmware impossible to download, even for people with legitimate uses.
no, you just warn them that the "catch projects" are provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to. the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.
Last time MS used numbers, they ended up thoroughly confusing their customers. Up until windows 3.X, everything seemed fine, but then they released windows 95, which is more than 91 better than the 3.X series. Except no one was quite sure where those 91 versions fit in.
windows 98 was clearly 3 better than windows 95, but then they decided to put out windows 2000. Although it was better, I think that everyone agrees that it certainly isn't 1900+ better than windows 98.
Things will be better if they stick to unconfusing names and letter combinations.
Of course, as an AFU'r, I do believe emoticons are for those who lack the skills to express themselves with words and the intelligence to understand what others have written.
Well, communicating about illegal activity on a public forum is a pretty stupid idea. Especially considering evidence that Orkut may be involved with the CIA and NSA. Chances are those organizations were involved in this drug bust.
We should send a bunch of kudzu to mars. That stuff will grow anywhere.

That would be like giving the rebel alliance award to han solo!
It probably helps to get free advertising from the slashdot editors.

Yet another brilliant innovation from apple!

yes, but apple has never been about customization. They're design goal is generally usability. Often the two goals conflict.

Forget Linus. Larry Wall is a 2-time winner of the contest.

Well, you're still several years away from being able to drink.
Hey! That's my e-mail address. Thanks to you, I'm now going to get tons of spam!

TMTOWTDI, Indeed!
Oh, they've overtaken Sun?

Is it really "harassment" to ask for the sources of funding for a research project?
:-(
