Well, contrary to popular belief, XML wasn't really meant to be directly edited by humans. Large nested structures become exceptionally difficult to read and there's not really a clear way to break them down into smaller abstract parts. Not to mention, it's a rather verbose language (compared to something like lisp which has a nearly identical structure with half as much syntax).

If there isn't a GUI for editing ant files, there really should be.

Considering the (lack of) speed with which MS reacts to critical bugs and flaws in their products, the only conclusion is that MS is actually LESS accountable than most large open source developers.

It seems to me like the accountability to OSS developers hits much closer to home. Very few (if any) OSS developers work on a software project that they don't actually use. OSS developers are accountable to themselves and to their employers, not to some customers who they'll never have any interaction with.

well, the peer-2-server-2-peer model that napster uses is horribly inefficient (at least this was how napster used to work). p2p technology could really reduce the network usage if it optimizes the peer list to prefer local network sources.

This sounds like a way for napster to use an inefficient distribution model to help dell sell more servers to people with large wallets.

well, i'm not really saying that its a news show in the sense that it's a reliable news source, but the focus of the show is on the news. Most of the jokes are really only funny in the context of current events. I guess the absurdity of the electoral system is timeless in its humor, so they make that available on DVD.

  13. Re:Finally on Internet Movies Before DVD · · Score: 1

Well, since the daily show is a news show, there's virtually no market for resale. It would cost an absurd amount of money to press DVDs for the entire series and no one would want to buy them. A "best of" DVD might turn some profit, but for the most part, Comedy central isn't losing some great potential value by making the show available online.

As for ESR, he seems to have taken the whole Open Source vs Free Software debate too far. The movement as a whole doesn't need two sides shouting FUD about eachother. Free Software has its place and so does Open Source. I wouldn't try to sell Open Source to a grassroots movement just like I wouldn't want to sell Free Software to IBM.

If a lot of people are misspelling a word, that's usually a sign that the spelling is somehow confusing. The designers of the english language clearly didn't do enough usability studies with it. And that's just the issue of spelling; proper english grammar is needlessly complicated. I don't care what's "correct" according to english books, punctuation belongs outside of quotes, where it is easy to parse. THere's also that stupid idea that you shouldn't split infinitives in English because you can't do it in latin.

Natural languages are evolving bodies of knowledge. I see no reason to not refrain from evolving english.
