    So it's time for some sort of action. Will the EFF be mounting any sort of counterattack? This is absolutely unbelievable, except as you say, nothing that Congress does should surprise anyone anymore.

    Between cable TV and b-band internet service, I pay Comcast nearly $100/month as it is! If that's not paying for content I don't know what is. Yes, I know the inet service is paying for bandwidth, but when I write out the check each month, it certainly feels expensive.

    I'm trying to figure out what keeps the user from permanently "renting" this camera (downloading the pics to the computer and then deleting them off camera).

    Nico and Winzip clearly control the market, thus the format. I don't see how PKWare stays in business anyway. Does Winzip pay them a royalty for the word "zip" or for the 2-byte "PK" eye-catcher in the archives?

    If you think about it, almost every word in the English language appears in some band's name somewhere. The mistake may have been "honest" (although I find that a questionable use of the word), but they're apt to be making it a lot in the coming months.

    And it would also appear that simply using a phony filename extension will be enough to fool the "automated system." From now on, I and all my partners in tune trading criminal activities will use .RIAA to denote classic .mp3, and .MPAA instead of .mpg or .mpeg, but only on even numbered days. Other times we'll switch 'em around. That oughta hold 'em off for a while.

    Oops! Did I just divulge a circumvention technique? Will I be liable for prosecution under DMCA or US-PATRIOT or some other silly-ass law?

    I've got mod points to use, and the cleverest thing I've found around here is the title of this article. Did "timothy" do that, or someone else?

    And another thing: why is that that whenver I've got moderator points, all the really good comments are already at +5 before I see them? I hate using the points just because I have them. Is it OK to let them die unused?

    Everyone yelling about how much more money the RIAA has for legal fees is ignoring the fact that possession of music which is not "licensed" to you is against the law.
    Then why aren't they arrested and charged with a crime? Why would the RIAA go to the trouble of having their lawyers and PR folks file civil suits and press releases, etc, etc, when a simple phone call to the local sherrif would do?

    Thanks....couldn't have said it better myself, and I'm a similarly marginalized ex-worker. I'm still looking for what to do instead, tho.

    Losing a job that way is much like a death, and as a survivor, I've got to do quite a bit of grieving until the acceptance phase arrives. I think I'm there now, but I _still_ need money to survive, and I've yet to find anyone willing to trade it to me for anything I'm willing to do.

    Once my unemployment benefits stop (which are barely minimum wage), I'll have to seriously consider a life of crime. Alas, that, too, is better done by younger, stupider men.

    Surely someone who reads /. has access to both Unix and Linux kernel sources? A little creative fgrep'ing should find some dupes if they exist, which can then be posted, since for all we know, they're "owned" by whoever holds copyright on the Linux version.

    Yes, that's true (OO.o, not abiword). That means you can just "mv foo.sxw foo.gz" and your file manager (nautilus, explorer, konqueror, whatever) will probably just do the right thing.

    I've got an HP DJ895Cxi that I stole from my employer over three years ago, and it's still working fine. I managed to get the company to pay for most of the cartridges I used over the years as well (different company for most of that time, though). But even if it dies, I'll have gotten my money's worth.

    But then, I'm unemployed now, so if it breaks down, I'll probably just do without printing for awhile. (And no, I was not fired for stealing!)

    Rising to the bait, ....

    No, I don't poke the code, but I do play bugzilla to get pet peeves addressed, etc. I have way more control over mozilla's future than I do IE's, that's for sure. And your "what's the diff" question is irrelevant: the mozilla community isn't a small company, nor does it dictate. OperaSoft, OTOH..... well, that's different.

    I hardly think there's any argument on this point is there? At least not among /.ers. It's not just a hatred of MSFT that keeps me using mozilla and phoenix daily builds. I refuse to use Netscape browsers for the same reasons: I will not allow ANY monster company (e.g. MSFT, IBM, AOL/TW, CNN, Apple) to dictate or control my web experience. Period.
