... and I already feel violated.
Maybe I'm way out of touch with young people, but I don't think any of the 13-24's that I know would be fool enough to fall for this pap.
Talk about clueless.
things that shouldn't be consumed in large quantities (animal fat, sugar, etc.) would taste bad.
The usual explanation for this is that we (i.e. humans) evolved specifically for the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of our ancestors on the savannah. In such an environment, such "bad" things were in fact desirable due to their rarity -- fats and sugars are excellent sources of energy, and they're harder to
obtain than the more ubiquitous vegetable matter. Thus, individuals who crave fats/sweets are selected.
There hasn't been enough time for these traits to disappear, since it's only been in the past few centuries that we live long enough to make the long-term health consequences of such cravings to show up. And remember, for much (most?) of the Earth's population, such foods are still rare, thus desirable.
...EEEEEEeeeeekkkkk!!!! Don't be messing with my taste buds!!!! It's taken millions of years of evolution to make butter and ice cream and salt and pig meat and..... to be perceived as Tasty. Don't take that away from us!
Agree, it's a great read. Now how to get the people who matter and who can do something for us to read it?
Once again, I call up my/. brethren to boycott all big-media CDs! (Like it'll help...)
I'd claim there's not a dime's worth of difference between Nike and most politicians, thus no difference between commercial and political speech. It's all done to enrich the speaker at the listeners' expense.
Fuck 'em, I say. Then fuck 'em again. And keep on fuckin' 'em.
I have three distinct memories from a house we lived
in for only 6 months or so in 1952:
In the backyard with my mother, gathering snow in a saucepan to make ice cream = snow mixed with sugar and vanilla extract. The fact that snow was safely edible should
clue you that this is in the early 1950s.
Same house, a field mouse has gotten trapped in the large white claw-footed bathtub and cannot escape: it scampers halfway up the side before sliding back down. My mother and I are both screaming.
Oddly, this one just came back to me, causing me to 1s/two/three/ Same house: my father is showing me a breadbag with mouse turds in it.
(I wonder if it's the same mouse?)
Yikes! "Not to be harsh?" It's very harsh.
Some of the smartest, best, most talented people I know have been laid off recently here in the Silly Valley.
It has little to do with talent, sometimes,
and everything to do with greed of the vulture
capitalists who treat human resources as a knob on their
ROI fine tuner.
Bottom line looking a bit thin? "Downsize" a couple of those $100K software geeks! That'll fix it!
No fucking way would I "choose" software engineering.
And in fact, I never chose it to begin with. I just sort of fell into it as the path of least resistance.
But now, at the age of 51, laid off, living in the Silly Valley where 40 is considered over-the-hill, I'm seriously considering moving to Canada -- better health care for the under-employed -- or turning to a life of crime.
Bitter? Yeah, a bit.:-)
David Lindley doesn't sell downloadable tunes, but he allows that folks who purchase his CDs from him might want to make copies for their friends. The right to make a copy costs $5US, also on the honor system.
Check him out: his music is a lot more fun than Phish, I promise.
Laid off. It was before Thanksgiving, but I consider that the start of the holidays, don't you? So yes, I'd say you're damned lucky you got a bobble-doll.
I've never cared for Intuit's crass commercialism. Even after you pay them for their crapware, they insist on begging you to spend more. I'm still using Quicken-2000 (Basic), but never allow it to "upgrade" itself, and as soon as I can get it to export my data correctly, I'll use gnucash. (So far I get no joy....)
What I actually worry about more is that every day it seems that someone is trying to get into my pocket without my permission, and it makes me very angry. Is this because I'm old and just a curmudgeon, or is it really getting worse?
Being a huge Asimov fan I have not made up my mind if this is a good or bad thing.
Sorry, but anything that extends Will Smith's career is a Bad Thing IMO.
But seriously, the issues raised in the original stories are just as relevant as ever, or maybe moreso since we're closer to having "intelligent" robots. I wonder if young people still read them....maybe a movie is the only way to get the point across anymore.
As I write this, the main article is about to roll off the/. front page, yet there are only 66 follow up replies posted. That would seem to indicate a less than enthusiastic following for this rag.
One more freebie trade rag bites the dust. I promise you, your local landfill is thankful.
I wouldn't pee on my ex-employers if they were on fire....unless they happened to be standing near one of my prized guitars or my cat.
In the case of the original poster, you can tell the company didn't deserve the help since they apparently didn't ever offer to pay.
they have the option of changing their status to non-profit and gaining a delay
The presumably also have the option of going out of business and paying nothing, which is exactly what the RIAA wants to happen. That's the only possible explanation for the exorbitant rates being demanded.
I've said it before, I'll say it again: fuck 'em, and fuck 'em again; then keep on fuckin' 'em.
Boycott big-money music!

I hope someone can make it available here when it comes out.

Just look at this picture. Go ahead, I'll wait here.....
Now, admit it, those two look like dorks. Thanks, but I'll walk.

... that's whut Uncle Daddy taught me in school.
That had to be one of the shallowest, least enlightening "interviews" I've seen in /.-land. Can we get back to real geekdom now?

all the samples I've downloaded from emusic's site are a cheezy-sounding 128kbs MP3. That's hardly hi-fi in my book. Are the ones you buy any better?
Other than RIAA and Hollywood is finding it too hard to cram DRM into them? This has a foul odor about it, n'est ce pas?
