  1. Re:Computer versus Kindle on Kurzweil Takes On Kindle With "Blio" E-Reader · · Score: 1

The Kindle's not really an LCD in the technical meaning. It doesn't have a back light which makes it much easier to read. There's no eye strain and it's very similar to reading a book.

  2. Re:iron mountain facility on Iron Mountain's Experimental Room 48 · · Score: 1

Having been in this facility, and know people who work in it, I have to say it's a rather surreal experience to go into it. The entrance is tall enough and wide enough for two or three semi-trucks to drive through. The walls look like they should be in an old time superman tvshow. They just look fake. They pipe in three or four radio stations from the area. It's also an extremely high security area, there are guards outside with machine guns. After 9/11 there was a rumor that Cheney was moved there for protection.

Has any one else noticed that there has been an increase in Vinyl sales? I know i have bought more records than anything else. In those i often get a copy of the album digitally, for the new stuff anyway. Then i just go and download the record i own. I figure it fair use then. I could take the time to copy it onto my computer, but why bother? Sure i might miss some stuff, but i get most of it for my iPod.

There's this thing that's still popular... NEWS PAPER. Yea, imagine just downloading the days news paper so you can read it wherever you go on a few pieces of paper. it's to take a bookcase and fit it into a filing cabinet. They are working to turn this into something with a refresh rate fast enough for video... Image unrolling your monitor, or putting this stuff on your wall so you can watch movies on it... imagine the porn, or changing the wallpaper in your house with a touch of a button. There are lots of things outside of the computer that could be improved by it. Billboards, shit like that.

There are a large number of other Prequels to the LoTR. After writing the hobbit as a bed time story for his kids, he went and wrote the Silmarillian, history of the elves evil before Sauron and how the Orcs came to be. This is basically a history book on the world of middle earth. They make references it in LOTR actually, but they are subtle and unless you've read it you wouldn't catch them. There's also the Unfinished stories mostly about the First Men, and theres the lost stories expansions on stories in the silmarillian and unfinished stories. They could be really interestings.

Getting the person answering the phone call to provide them with the information they need to get access to the phone records. This is really pretty scary, what else can those PIs get at if they can get your phone records?

  9. Re:Theory of evolution.... on Missing Link Found Between Human Ancestors · · Score: 1

You're completely right it is outdated. However wouldn't it be appropriate to call it something else? Because the masses confuse scientific theory with a guess, something that's so comfirmed as this should be given a different status, even though it can't be called a law, since no scientist would actually ever do that.

  10. Theory of evolution.... on Missing Link Found Between Human Ancestors · · Score: 1

Basically, for those of us that actually believe in Evolution this doesn't do anything for us. In the real meaning of Theory a confirmation of the theory doesn't help prove it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory At this point the scientific community would have to decide if it is a law or not. Every scientist out there believes in evolution, the only benefit of these "misssing links" is that it takes the scientific community a step closer to calling evolution a law and closing the book on the whole theory debate. We all expected these links to be found. I wasn't surprised to hear they found another missing link.

  11. Re:Welcome to the world of tomorrow on When Telecom Mergers Hit Home · · Score: 1

What it appears you are all forgetting when it comes to Cell phones is that most of the Cell phone companies are also owned by a Telco. Verizon Wireless is 55% owned by Verizon Business, Cingular is owned by the New AT&T, and Sprint is a long distance carrier too. The only major long distance carrier that does not have a major brand cell company is Qwest, which the larger telcos are looking to buy. The reason that we have such cheap long distance is the over abundance of dark fiber all over the country and across the ocean. After the AT&T break up the only way for the new companies to try to get more customers was an attempt to reduce their long distance rates, eventually this lead to the build out of fiber lines all over the country. Now the very thing that lead those companies to being competitive is being used against them. Other companies were allowed to rent those lines out and take profit from the major carriers. To stay afloat those carriers merged together in an attempt to reduce redundant services. In the case of cell services it allows the companies to increase capacity in some cities and gain access to new markets that only one or the other company had before. This also allows them to focus on the data services which will be the life blood of the cell providers in the years to come since voice calls are practically worthless to them now. I wouldn't be surprised if comcast and other cable companies try to put together a Wi-Fi voice network to try to compete with the cellular market. On the Telco Side it's going to be a race to see who can get fiber to the home to compete with the cable companies on HD video and faster download rates.

  12. Re:And people wonder why. on Outsourcing Evolving · · Score: 1

There are a couple reasons why the meat industry is in the condition it is. One major reason is that many of the workers are uneducated immigrants, many are illegal and the ones that aren't don't know what rights they do have. The meat industry is definitely taking full advantage of this situation, and most of us don't know about it and don't care to do anything about it. In regards to the health care the company doesn't have to provide it. Providing it is a good PR move and it's very pro employee, which companies should be to prevent being forced to do into doing things they don't really want to and constantly fighting against their employees. For instance if you buy a GM vehicle a huge portion of that sales goes to healthcare of retired employees, not currently employed but retired. In today's market costs have to be cut some where. I would see nothing wrong with removing all requirements of companies to provide health care and make it a government function. A reason why more technical jobs are starting to be outsourced like engineering is the salary of the engineers. Why pay a new engineer in the US 55k/year when you can pay some one in china only 1500/year? Eventually the US salaries are going to lower and the forgien salaries are going to increase to where they are the same as companies go completely global. Plus the people in those counties also have a lot more Drive than US students.

Square needs to go back to the tried and true methods they were using for FFVII and of those before. VII had quite a bit of CGI's but they were short and you still had the feeling that it was a game, but in X the scenes took you out of the game, and some times interupted the flow of the game. If they go back to quarky characters and interesting plots like they had in the first 7 games, i think they'll be back on top in the world of RPGs.

But is it really worth ruining this 9 year old girls life just so britny spears, metallica, and kid rock, along with the RIAA, can get a little more money. If they sued this girls parents for 500 songs, they would probably want more money then they have saved for her college education. Who needs the money more?

    E) all of the above. The RIAA is ruining music by turning it into a machine. They found a formula they think works, plug in a new artist use the same shit as before and bam they got a new hit. The only people who are getting hurt are the musicians who are just starting out. they don't have any record sales and don't have many gigs, these artists need support, but the Pop crap out there, who cares about it. Must musicians get their money from the tours they go on, not record sales.

I think that he's right, the robots may not be on the same level as us mentally, however, i do believe in a few years they will be able to perform the menial tasks that most of us don't really want to do. I think that since people do have a fear of robots taking over the world, the average joe does anyway, that there will have to be atleast one human as an overlord to the robot, just so there can be some human interaction if there is an unsatisfied customer, and just to ensure everything is working properly.
I also do see a sort of compitition between private programmers and corporations where these people design more personal programmed personalities for these robots.
I think that if this happens people will want something like Asimov's I, Robot series in affect to protect them
