Unfortunately my WTF compiler burned itself into a tiny piece of blackened cinder after I accidently ran a Maureen O'Gara article through it. By the time it was cool enough to the touch some very serious guys in seriously cheap suits came and took it from me. They said that while they had the caption, the rack, and the bread, they needed something else as well.
It wasn't until they had left that I realized my stereo was missing.
I'm just one guy, ogling tatas and replying to his own posts. (I'm not sure, but I think that is poor etiqutte-- the self replies, I mean--so I'm making it anon to kind of mitigate that)
That would be why making a prequel was inherently flawed- you just can't get around and through the huge disparaity between the two. The choice taken (at least in reagrds to the first few episodes I saw) was to simply ignore TOS. In doing so, however, they lost track of what made Trek good- that it was SciFi mirroring who we were.
So, instead of mucking about with timelines and throwing around pseudoscientifically sounding technobabble, why not mack a show based upon our reality now. There are numerous ways of doing this, many of which would be far more promising than a prequel. The electronics being better, therefore, weren't the problem so much as a symptom.
And I would agree with you- but only to a certain extent. Props and sets also need to be internally consistent with themselves. They can be whatever you want them to be, but once your decision is made, you need to stick with it. If you have an already established environment, which the Trek universe surely is, than the various pieces of that universe should be internally consistant with each other. When they are not- then there's a problem.
Mentally, I never made it past the first episode. The Klingon in the cornfield was a touch much to stomache, and then when the electronics in Enterprise looked more sophisticated than in the Original Series, I just couldn't do it. I think trying to make a prequel to the Original Series, but having it tie into the later series whilst bypassing the Original, was a fundamental flaw. I really hope they don't try another Trek series until they have someone at the helm who truly understands what makes Trek great (hint: it ain't the technobabble).
I read about this earlier, and it should be noted that the quotes she is accused of fabricating were all for "color." The stories themselves and the main people quoted therein are legitimate. So its not a Jayson Blair or MOG type of deal. That being said, it still looks bad, and that's anethema to a news organization.
Not only funny, but a fantastic San Juan Capistsano reference. I have to ask, is it that well known outside of Central CA (where I grew up) or do you actually live in those parts?
Unfortunately yes. Now that it looks like there are only two more books coming down the pipeline*, one of which will be out this Fall, I believe, I will go ahead and finish it off. I know that Book 10 was reviled by a good number of the readership, but I was actually heartened by it. Its sole purpose seemed to be setting up the last two books. Of course if RJ keeps stretching the story out to like book 14 or 15, then I might give it a miss.
*RJ apparantly signed a contract to start a another series of books with the same publisher, so he is more likely than not actually winding it down.
In response I would say a couple of things. As other posters have mentioned, this is what is to be taught in science class. As such it ought to represent what Science has to say on the subject. I don't see any real way of introducing faith based beliefs into a science class, because they are not science. Within science, from the research that I have done, there is no conflict; so there is no reason, again from the perspective that a "science" class's sunction is to teach "science," to include disclaimers.
I would also offer to you a question about teaching faith based reasonings on the origin of the Planet, life, and the like. Which faith do you teach? Do you limit it to a Judeo-Christian model? Do you include the creation faithes of non-Christian religions? I believe, and feel free to correct me on this if I am wrong, that every society of which we are aware, has their own account of Creation which they believe on faith. In a nutshell, how do you choose which faithes are more acceptable?
In practical terms then, if a zealotly Chrisitan parent is aggreived at having their child taught Evloution in school, what will be their reaction when their child comes home and starts talking about the Turtle Stacking Model of the Universe?
I, along with most of/. probably can't count the number of times that we've seen the original 3 Episodes of SWs. I also know I'm not alone in having watched the first two prequels. So now, after all that, how can we not see Episode III? Even if the reviews said it was more of a cross between Ishtar and Battlefield Earth than a SW flick, we'd all still go see it just to finish the series off. After that many hours of investment, no matter how bad it was, we would still have to see it- because not seeing it would still be worse than seeing a horrendously awful movie.
The thing that I have never really understood about the anti-evolution Christian types is why it matters to them if their kids understand what the rest of the world is thinking? Its like the goal is absolute ignorance of everything not in the Bible. Nothing that I read in the Bible supports that viewpoint. Can anyone explain this?
The weird bit I don't dispute, but people are different. In his journal at one point he wrote that he likes collecting things like that- little nuggets of digital history. I have a friend who likes old city buses. He actually buys them and now has 3 or 4 of them (yes we're talking full fledged city buses, and no, I'm not making this up). It certainly strikes me as weird as well, but there really isn't any harm to it.
I try to read the comments first and only then do I look at the UID. People with low UIDs are just as likely to say stupid things as people with high UID are to say things incedibly insightful. It doesn't, at the end of the day, really matter.
And what does that have to do with the comment? He wanted a low UID so he got one. Who gives a rip? If you have something to say about what he wrote than say say it. Slashdot has a high enough noise to signal ratio without pissing matches over UIDs.

As long as you provide a link its all good;-)
Wait, I thought that when it came to the GPL and FOSS that beer was supposed to be free. Where'd I go wrong?

If he had gone into CS, he'd still be alive;-) At least that was my pre-coffee-before-8-in-the-f'n-morning logic...
For Johnny is no more,
For what he thought was H2O,
Was H2SO4.
If only he had gone into CS instead of Chem...
"We got the Feature. He's holed up over on the South side of the partition. Better bring your compiler."

How right you are. I was confusing my childhood memories of learning about the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano and touring San Juan Batista.

They're going to tour in Hawai'i?
If you didn't catch last night's Simpson's, you really should. Homer gets caught up in the "Left Below" craze. Pretty sharp satire.
The black hole was a noningth of an inch in length and weighed about the same as a large star.

you don't have to think in Russian. Though I am beginning to suspect that my geeky friends are having some at my expense...
