  1. prices on Home-Built vs. Store-Bought PCs · · Score: 0

considering i build about one system every two months ill give you three pieces of advice

dont spend alot of money on small things (fans cables etc.) best and cheapest place to get fans is nexfan.com , and everybody charges something similar for cables

two aviod unknown and unresponsive sites, alot of companies dont move quickly this is a pain because it slow down the time to get the product and if you have an issue they dont respond very quickly (directron.com is a good example they are slightly over priced and Customer service sucks , l-buy.com is just plain god awful)

three consolodate , get four or five parts from each vendor and they may give you a discount. and it will definetly save you money on shipping.

    these are my personal fav's
newegg.com (kinda pricey but they are fast and have a good selection)
nexfan.com (fastest site i have ordered from mostly just cooling products though)
    crazypc.com (case mods)
tufshop.com (hate the name like the prices)

i personally go out of my way to aviod
    directron.com (see above)
    l-buy.com (slow and unresponsive)

again these are just my personal opinions and dont reflect other peoples POV

    oh and did i mention thinkgeek.com {i need some karma ;-) }

maybe the US gov't would like a asteriod to destroy some big buildings with a couple thousand people in it before they actually do anything about it.

or of course they could actually _get_a_clue_ and start taking prevenitive measures BEFORE bad things happen. oh and all of the people who say the odds are a billion to one of this happening were probally the same people who said AIDS wouldnt become an epidemic and terrorists wouldnt attack the use.

you know in all reality phillips owns alot of patents including the CD format. maybe we should start riding them about letting the mpaa/riaa use there patents. i mean not completely stop them but hold them hostage and get them to lower prices.

of course thats about has likely as MTV actually playing music.

or a top 20 band that has talent.

you know they can deny deny deny all they want.
just like they deny everything else untill they have no way to deny it, then they just say they did what was in the "publics interest"

problem with something like this is most ISP's will go bankrupt quickly making prices go up, also offering less variety. then we will have yet another monopoly, caused in part because of the gov't and in part due to the fact that the average person doesnt think it "affects them"

hey worst case scenario all of the ISP's go bankrupt and the US gov't takes over icann and the net in general. just think it takes them a week to deliver regular mail.

they would probably come up with some way to filter and monitor everything through one big system , which would slow everything down.
mail would have to go through a very large scanning/storing program (which will not be quick because micro$uck will probably make it for them) then sit in the mailq waiting to arive at the destination.

not to mention if said system gets hacked or goes down

then again if you take a step back and look at it again, we really CANT look good when it comes to people's rights. the politicians want a capitalistic-communism mix. they want you to have money , so they can have money (taxes) and so you can buy the all-wonderful-all-amazing intellectual (sp?) property supplied by those wonderful consumer loving people over at the RIAA (where they fight to rip off not only consumers but also musicians) and of course the lovely people over at the MPAA ('the VCR will crush the US economy -yeah THEM')

you know if its so ignorant of me to state the obvious why dont you point out exactly WHY i am ignorant (or at least how that comment is ignorant)
as far as anything else i will simply say that most windows (l)users (such as you) seem to think windows is great (mostly because of ease of use/compatibility) and get mad when people like me say that the "average" windows user doesnt want to or cant take the time to pick up linux.

the ultimate Q here shouldnt be weather wal mart is ready for linux but is linux ready for wal-mart. the answer to that is a resounding NO.
say johnQ buys walmart linux box gets home and decides he needs a better vid card runs out and plops it in and ..... NO X. now what ? you expect him to know how to re-config/compile the kernel with the driver for said video card included ? or even to know what kernel he is running ?
yeah right, most of the average users have trouble using outlook correctly. and thats not a nock on them , most people just dont need to or want to become good with computers. they just want to turn them on and go. with the "features" windows offers them.
oh and how about the first time they wanna burn a CD or watch a DVD. not exactly the most uncommon use but with linux you have to LEARN the program's.

not just point-n-click drag-n-drop happy go lucky crap on windows
