if you hadn't noticed, this was a comment against walmart and nowhere in the post was anything about netflix. just because i don't make every sentance explicitly clear isn't a sign i didn't RTFA.
Customers order the movies online. Wal-Mart sends them from six distribution points, reaching 90 percent of the nation within two days, the company says
this usually means i have to wait a couple of days? WHen you and your spouse/bf/gf have that spur of the moment movie itch, this won't help... unless they can burn the dvd as you wait in the store. . now that would be good
that's why it's called a donation. any proper donation doesn't have stipulations on what we do with the systems as long as they're being used for education. as for the donor, once it's out of their hands and it's being used properly for education, they have no business complaining.. no matte the donor
true, time does equal money. but in each of these instances i mentioned for my old employers right after the.com burst and even today with "downtime" in our company vs' laying people off, we're given the opportunity to stay on and learn while doing regular maintenance, upgrades, repairs & whatnot- sometimes at a slight paycut for those "training days" or we just get a few less hours during the week while still learning at home or at work, but off the clock if we so wished.
so time does = money as you said. however with my experiences, it's been far less costly for my employers than if it had to train a full staff.
if ms decided to donate the PC's, i would expect them to accept them- delete the MS clutter on the hdd and install linux. also, if that same school got mac computers and the IT had a policy of linux only, just wipe the mac os off it and install linux.
But even without the 30 new Macintosh computers, Foster will have a stash of Macs around the school. A caveat of the technology plan allows teachers to keep their Macs at their desks instead of getting a PC if they wish. In addition, the library and a graphics classroom can keep their Macs
THe article mentions this rediculous policy for PC only systems because of their IT staff and quite frankly it's foolish. IT departments, personel etc. are constantly updating their knowledge to better deal with emerging technologies, right? Why an IT department can't have 3 of those in-DUH-viduals learn about MAC systems?
I've worked in almost half a dozen IT departments and we constantly were exposed to systems that were good for various reasons, and we had to learn. Failure to do so resulted in eventual 'replacement'. That included MAC systems. And it didn't cost the department any extra, for us to learn and actually use with some degree of success these systems. Sure we brought stuff home to learn with (including a handy g4 tower, but that's another story) but isn't that a part of the job??
The ignorant attitude of the administrative personel (probably influenced by the IT depts. unwillingness to learn mac's for some biased reason) shows their competence in the field.
for some reason i pictured the village people doing their song. *shudder*
From the site:
According to opponents, UCITA sets default contract terms that favor software vendors and free them of liability for any software problems. Supporters say companies are free to negotiate terms and conditions, and they have attempted, unsuccessfully, to ameliorate concerns by removing some controversial provisions, such as "self-help," which would have allowed a vendor to disable a system during a dispute
looks like this was drafted by Microshaft, BSA, **AA's and our beloved government... oh wait.
You can also read from the following site: EFF PAPER
You see, UCITA says that by default a software developer or distributor is completely liable for flaws in a program; but it also allows a shrink-wrap license to override the default. Sophisticated software companies that make proprietary software will use shrink-wrap licenses to avoid liability entirely. But amateurs, and self-employed contractors who develop software for others, will be often be shafted because they didn't know about this problem. And we free software developers won't have any reliable way to avoid the problem
Solution, lets remove shrink wrapped licencing period. That's like buying a car- THEN signing th e contract.
HEre's another one:
UCITA has another indirect consequence that would hamstring free software development in the long term--it gives proprietary software developers the power to prohibit reverse engineering. This would make it easy for them to establish secret file formats and protocols, which there would be no lawful way for us to figure out.
This is familliar. Doesn't it sound like an extention to the DMCA? Hmmm...
and where is this hidden within the "Deep menus" please? it would be benifical to us.. unless you're referring to the exclusive filter setting. in that case I'll call you a fart for chaning the word on me.
Microsoft Hotmail is one of the largest providers of free e-mail services over the Internet, with more than 88 million users as of December 2000. This popular service is growing by 11 million new accounts per quarter
11 million eh? does that include the new spam accounts people use for a few days?
just a little silly, but i never even read the messages that msn or hotmail send me to my inbox.. even though my filters are on exclusive.
BTW, just a little FYI, but if you set some custom filters to sent messages with the name MSN,HOTMAIL or MICROSOFT in the from field to your junk mail box, they go directly there:D
I don't see how this is a troll. His post is completly fact. My roommate has been infected with worms and viruses- he even has this one and he's behind a router AND a proxy! Noting the fact that they are all windows boxen, what does this tell you? Windows simply sucks. End of story. Even people who've written worms/viruses for various GNU systems don't get very far because of the inherent nature of the Linux/BSD etc.
It's a fact that the default install of a windows machine versus a GNU system is insecure. That's all there is to it. Just because it's the "fault" of Joe Sixpack they have the virus doesn't make it completely their fault. I don't like using windows update because it'll break the windows systems i do admin. I have to run through it manually and double check everything. With linux, crap. Just throw up iptables/ipchains or use your firewall of choice.
Point being, the end user is a moron. They don't read/. so they're not technically minded (think mom/pop/grandparents here)
Oh yeah, one more thing.. When HAVEN'T you walked into a bank and seen shiny new dell machines on desks and behind the tellers?? hmmm?? Thats what I thought.
ps. reread this before you moderate and really think about it.
I'd love to contest this actually. If the mail software was coded with any efficiency and those writing the software had their heads screwed on straight we wouldn't have these problems.
There's nothing wrong with html in email, however software authors don't usually think like criminals and this is why we're losing badly. You have to think like a criminal to beat them.

As for what he thinks of SCO's actions, Torvalds in an e-mail interview compared the fight between SCO, IBM and Novell Inc. to bad TV. "Quite frankly, I found it mostly interesting in a Jerry Springer kind of way. White trash battling it out in public, throwing chairs at each other. SCO crying about IBM's other women.... Fairly entertaining," said Torvalds
this will definitely be interesting to watch in the courtroom.
SCO Lawyer: Your honor, they stole our code! Judge: (to SCO lawyer) shut it, baliff- give him the chair! Baliff: *picks up folding chair from behind the bench and beats the SCO lawyer silly*
Officials at the Idaho lab hinted at a dramatic exhibit of its pilot reactor's safety. "We could even do a demonstration in which we
dump the helium coolant," said James Lake, associate laboratory director. "That would be a way to show the public in a visible way how safe the technology is."
I'm not sure if this is just a EU thing or a german thing, but the period is a delimiter for numbers with greater than 3 digits. ie: 3.000 00 and did you notice the space after the first 3 zeros? that's supposed to mean the cents value (or at least in the old german monitary value a pfennig (spelling??))
Don't quote me on that exactly, but it's what i remember learning a ways back in school.
Joining Wexler as co-founder of the caucus is Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., who helped author a note last fall to 74 fellow Democrats assailing the Linux open-source operating system's GNU General Public License as a threat to America's "innovation and security." Smith's Ninth District includes the Seattle surburbs near Microsoft's Redmond, Wash., headquarters
After reading that article, I nod my head in complete agreement. What linux needs for the masses (besides a little conversion and persuasion) is a working, fast and stable GUI + apps, a working sound architecture (such as the one that the XFree86 team has with 4.3!) and a working sound recorder/playback libaries. OOo needs to be a hell of a lot faster in load time (bloated)
This is a VERY easy goal that takes cooperation, and a few people/teams of developers to suck up that "not made here" syndrome and just HELP. seeing your name in the credits is all some people need.
Lets get behind this, can we? or is the crowd of penguins a little too cold to move?
...if companies support it widely enough. It would be nice to slip this into a dumb terminal, and presto! instant user desktop with our personal info on it. Then take it out and carry your stuff with you.
go with pppoe for wi-fi if that's a possibility and also be sure to allow access only based on MAC address of the network card.
Not only will the network restrict based on their network card address, but also their user authentication (l/p)...
