  1. Why does easter change every year and... on Calculating the Date of Easter · · Score: 1

Why does Easter change date every year and Christmas does not. Were they set based on different calendars? Otherwise it would be indeed weird that the number of months between the two days switches all the time.

  2. Re:Unknown value? on Happy Pi Day · · Score: 1

  3. If I start my own band... on $5 Per Month Fee Proposed For Legal Music P2P · · Score: 1

If I start my own band and download my own music, can I get my money back?

  4. Re:they try so hard on Free In-Class Resource For Science Teachers · · Score: 2, Insightful

The teachers' union imposes many of those rules. Ironically, while many teachers care much about their students and want them to learn better, their own union is causing many of the problems. Abolishing the unions and changing the rules to allow the dismissal of teachers without severe legal penalties, will change the outcome of their students greatly. It is absolutely ridiculous to be forced to offer the same salary to everyone and not be able to get rid of employees. No company would function well like this, and the schools can't either.

  7. Re:I have the solution on The "Loudness War" and the Future of Music · · Score: 1

A real solution might be to have a few bytes in the compression format that "strongly recommends" to the player what the average volume of the song should be and what the range should be. Then the data is preserved, but the range of volume is still where the record companies want it to be.

  8. Caching? on Comcast and Net Speed Tests · · Score: 1

Perhaps the speed tests are used frequently enough for their system to cache it automatically?
As long as it isn't special treatment for the test sites, it is hard to blame Comcast for the speed boost.

  9. MSIs on A Windows-Based Packaging Mechanism · · Score: 1

If I remember correctly .msi files (also sometimes embeded in .exe files) are some basic form of a packaging system. It may be useful to latch into that to extract the relevant data and to convert it to .deb or whatever format you are planning to use.

Also: Is this project the actual packaging system (dpkg), the distribution system (apt-get + repositories) or both?

  10. Re:Women Belong In The Kitchen on Women Are Fleeing IT Jobs · · Score: 1

A large example for me is the military draft. If it ever becomes effective, only men will be sent abroad. Woman want to have equality but from my experience do not seem at all interested in accepting the responsibility of being part of the draft.

This kind of research isn't just occurring at Stanford. The NSF has had a big push recently to grant this kind of research across the country.

  13. A solution on Is Wikipedia Failing? · · Score: 1

The nice thing about Wikipedia is that it is a democratic system. So why not have a democratic editorial board?

That is, have two copies of a page - the latest "approved" content and the work in progress version. In order for edits to be moved into the "approved" section, they need to have enough users click a button on the page saying that they approve of it.

  14. Right to Bear Arms on Neuroscientist Halts Research to Stop Extremists · · Score: 1

Many people want to restrict the right to bear arms because of terrorism. They forget that founding fathers established the right specifically to allow us to commit acts of "terrorism", to attack our government if need be to reclaim our rights and freedoms. In fact, as our freedoms are becoming more and more restricted the time may be soon when this right is most needed.

  15. Re:Does it really need another GUI? on OLPC Gets a New Name, New Features · · Score: 1

This laptop is specifically for people who otherwise would not have access to a computer. I don't think many of them will have an issue learning "another GUI" because in all likelyhood this will be their first.

  18. How it should be done on Would You Use Ad-Supported Windows? · · Score: 1

The best way to implement this would be to run ads when a user launches a program. It would be relatively unbothersome to users because in most cases programs don't need to be opened and closed very often. Also, because the user is engaged in what he is doing, advertisers could count on people actually watching the ads more than other advertising types.

  19. I have one of these on HP Recalls 135,000 Laptop Batteries · · Score: 2, Insightful

So both my mom and sister have a Compaq Presario 2100, one of the affected models, but according to HP's site they don't have the issue thats being recalled. One of the computers recently died due to melting near the power supply. The other is like 150 degrees all the time, and has a battery pack that has bubbles of plastic from the melting and has had a number of labels melted off. So in what way do my computers not have overheating problems? I just spend $1500 on my sister's computer to replace it because it is no longer usable or fixable.

  22. Re:RAID isn't all about redundancy on Intel and Laptop RAID? · · Score: 1

Much of the reason hard drives for laptops are slower is because of the power consumption issue. I fail to see how 2 drives running slowly in raid will use up less power than a faster single drive.
