Than being said, the solution is to label this kind of actions for what it is, stand with the Pope ( I'm NOT Catholic ), get other religious leaders to understand and see is as an effort to oppress and control people. This discussion needs to be taken to religious groups, because that's where the majority of people begin to think about and discuss moral issues.

There no use trying to convince the intellectuals, they already understand the dangers and have been speaking out against them. They have also been largely ignored for decades.

I know this goes against the general slashdot-geek philosophy but this is class warfare and war makes strange bedfellows.

  5. Horray for the RIAA on $1.9 Million Award In Thomas Case Raises Constitutional Questions · · Score: 1

First off I do not work for the RIAA.

America needs to wake up and realize the damage these PIRATES are doing to the economy. If they cannot pay the fines then they should be imprisoned for the equivalent number of years it would take for them to have earned the amount of money required for their fine.

In this case it is a simple calculation: Average Hourly wage in US: $18.46 (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t16.htm)
    Fine: $80,000 per song * 24 = $1.92 million
    Jail time: ($80,000 * 24 songs) / $18.46 per hour
4334 days or 11.87 years in prison

Obviously America does not understand the vast natural resource and source of wealth music represents.

Lets take a look quick look at just on source of music distribution, the iTunes store.

As of February 2008 Apple has sold over 4 billion songs ( http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/02/26itunes.html) we know that the legal value of each digital copy those songs to be worth $80,000.
That is 320 trillion dollars worth of goods people, since just April of 2003 !!!!
Now consider that a song is copyright protected for the lifespan of the artist plus 150 years (let round that to 180 years). Now lets look at the math again.
    Yearly value: $320 trillion / 5 years = $64 trillion per year
Value of the music that existed on February 2008 over the life of the copyright:
    $64 trillion * 180 years = $11.52 quadrillion dollars

An that would be if no new songs were recorded over the next 180 years.

    How important is that number?
Well in 2008 the GDP of the world was a paltry $69.49 trillion. (CIA fact book, all amounts are in USD) Which means that one can safely say that the value of music that existed Feburary 2008 is worth more than the sum of the GDP of the WORLD over the last 200+ years.
Not that the RIAA needs to brag, but evidently the music industry was responsible for the lion's share of the Worlds GDP in 2008.

Now you can understand just how much of a threat piracy is.

The title should read: "Congress debating way to increase the crime rate".

We are course not just talking about illegal/undocumented laborers here. That is important to remember. I realize that this is of course an important tool in the "War on terrorism", but it is VERY dangerous thing.
Consider the following one-sided dialog: Sorry Mr. Smith you appear to be on the no work list. You say there's been a some kind of mistake? Not to worry Mr. Smith if indeed there was a mistake just submit these forms to Homeland Security. Once the FBI has completed an in depth background check, you will be able to interview with an agent of Homeland and that person can submit your name to be removed from the "do-not" work list. How long? the FBI background check generally takes 3-4 months, and again pending the results, the removal from the official list happens in 3-4 weeks. The law prohibits anyone from using the DNW list that is more than 3 months old, so you shouldn't have any more trouble at all 7-8 months. Pay your bills? Feed your family? I'm sorry Mr Smith but I can't help you with that. Next Please. I suppose you could get loans from your friends and family, Financial institutions of course won't touch you. And you should be aware that your Credit Cards will probably be suspended. Next PLEASE. Your children? Mr. Smith you should have thought of that before you got yourself on the list. I don't know what got you on the list, that information is classified otherwise it would make it easier for the criminals and terrorists to avoid. Now Mr. Smith there is nothing more I can do. You can print out the forms you need at the terminal by the waiting area. Please Mr. Smith you really don't need me to call security now do you? Next Please.

Yes, this is FUD. Yes, there will be Mr.Smiths. No, Statistically speaking it is highly unlikely to be you. BTW statistically speaking it's unlikely that some terrorist gives a damn about trying to kill or ruin you. Statistically speaking it is probably even less likely that any given person (picked at random) on this planet is a terrorist.

When it comes to the war on terrorism perhaps the best way to win is to not take part all. I cannot believe that there is an infinite supply of people so full of dispair to become suicide bombers (unless we help create people of hopelessness) There will always be criminals. But we can reduce those numbers by attacking poverty, and providing education. It probably would hurt if our "Justice" system was more about Justice than revenge and political gain.
We are losing the War on terrorism because we are expanding it every day. Because we are gearing up to make it a perpetual war, is our "new reality". Because we are trying to increase our fear by looking for more enemies and treating new encounters as encounters with a potential enemy. Because we are creating the means of being able to quickly and legally classify anyone as a criminal. Because we are quietly moving to the faulty inductive reasoning that because all terrorists are criminals and/or political dissidents then all criminal suspects and political dissidents are potential terrorists. The true war on terrorism is ultimately a war of ideas and ideals. As we surrender our ideals (by ignoring the constitution, ignoring Geneva conventions, giving a grim nod to torture, and in this case committing to a trial without jury where you are guilty until proven innocent.). We are losing precious ground to terrorism. And when finally, we are as afraid of our own government as we are of theft, rape, murder, or bombs. Then we have truly lost.

10 years ago this was hard for me to imagine how we could ever get to such a place in history. Now given the methods employed or tenuous holds on on freedoms and "self-evident truths" it is easy to see the path. Lists of bad guys are not all that effective, bad guys (terrorists) o not submit themselves to mis-identification nor do they willfully register themselves. There is no automation (for Joe CashRegister) to check the list and worse business are left with the difficult (and dangerous) task of validating a customers claim in cases of identification. The biggest danger of course is racial prejudice. We must make America free (I mean safe) for all Americans. The best solution of course is a national-id card. Anyone wishing to do commerce will simply need an inexpensive card reader and a phone/cell line or a connection to the internet. We'll make it easy to tie your bank/credit card accounts to to you ID card so those less secure/safe (and potentially illegal) methods of monetary transfers need not be used. Even yard-sales can be secured. We will of course need to be wary of anyone handling large amounts of cash. Fore those individuals are either fragrantly disregarding their civic duty to protect and uphold the laws of this country or they are simply an out and out criminal and/or terrorist.
