there are no performance benefits unless your existing applications require more than 4 GB of RAM (and are being slowed down by virtual memory).
if your apps need under 4 GB of RAM, you'll actually experience a slight DROP in performance due to the overhead required when doing math using larger 64-bit pointers.
Ignoring the ethical issues, what could be legally done to me if I went over to SourceForge and started a project called "Mozilla RDBMS"?
Though people have said that "it's not the same thing" because Firebird is a common word and Mozilla is not, as long as I don't make a browser called "Mozilla", I should be fine, right?
I'm posting this all the way at the bottom, so let's see how much Karma I get out of this...
I was hoping there were some good open-source and/or free tools out to author Flash movies. Well there's nothing even close to Flash MX, but here are the results of my search:
Yeah man, share the wealth. What's this "sends their IP" script?
(Yes, I admit that I'm too lazy to read up on VBScript, which is probably what you're using.)

The examples were most likely in VBScript, which costs nothing to buy
Free? You'll have to tell us where you're getting "free" Windows licenses - because that's the ONLY platform that supports VBScript. The examples were most likely written in Perl, which is a far better language than VB or VBScript due to its portability and low overhead. Why write a book that's only useful to Windows users when you can significantly increase your market by using a free, portable language?
Besides, to please the Slashdot crowd, shouldn't all of the examples be Written in C??
No, to please the Slashdot crowd, they should be written in any language that Microsoft doesn't control, preferably one that's difficult to run on Windows - like shell.:)
Thought costing just a tad bit more:) the SonyEricsson P800 is by far the best phone out there. US release date is March 15 (or 17th, something like that).
How carefully do people look over contributed code before including it?
They look over it very carefully - Patches can create security problems as well as stability issues. Maintainers aren't stupid enough to include untested patches from unknown persons. Their reputations are at stake, as is the reputation of the entire project.
The poor example from above is pulling words from the comments - and those contain the foulest language imaginable. There was a Slashdot article a while back about this.
I agree - Gentoo not only has excellent BSD-style package management, a performance-tuned kernel is also available.
You can always install the "vanilla sources" kernel, but come on - don't you want to experience the latest experimental performance patches to the kernel? SURE YA DO! Gentoo is a "bleeding edge" distro.
And no, it's not for beginners, but it is great for someone who'd like to learn more about Linux.
I remember after the Wen Ho Lee "incident" they tightened things up to the point where the scientists were complaining
That because there was a chinaman involved - you gotta keep an eye on 'em, can't be too careful. This Wired reporter was a God-fearing white Christian, so there's nothing to worry about. Now if it had been an ARAB, he woulda been on the first flight to Guantanamo Bay.
Reading through the responses, I see plenty of complaints but no one seems to have a plan for reforming the patent office.
I don't claim to have all the answers, but maybe it's time to sit down, discuss the possibilities, and take action. All average citizens have to be shown is the patent for the "cat exercise system using a laser pointer" to convince them that reform is needed. The next step is a letter campaign to congress.
Perhaps some college kid with plenty of free time on his or her hands would be willing to start something? Maybe the EFF can start something?
What would that make me? Am I an android and I didn't know it?
That depends - do you dream of electric sheep?

oh yeah, it also gives you TV/HDTV/FM/AM - maybe even satellite radio (but that's probably encrypted).
This is a *universal* radio - you just have to write software to make it do what you want.

Mr. Gore???? I didn't realize you read Slashdot!
Oh well.
damn it, I can't afford a P800 unless T-Mobile or AT&T subsidize the cost.

notice how Kuwait isn't on the list, though they're just as bad as the Saudis
I was hoping there were some good open-source and/or free tools out to author Flash movies. Well there's nothing even close to Flash MX, but here are the results of my search:
FlashWriter Toolkit
- PHP module
phpChart class package
- PHP class
Ming
- PHP module + libraries for several languages
- SWF output library and PHP module
SSWF
- WORKS, looks cool
- non-interactive (you make a script file)
AMF PHP
- An Open-Source Alternative for Flash Remoting
- Cool stuff: dynamic remote database access
- WORKS, but still in ALPHA
FreeMovie
- PHP & Ruby classes
Flounce
- Qt/KDE application to produce Flash SWF files
- PRE-ALPHA
SWF-Authoring
- alpha
- non-interactive (you make a script file)
Flame
- Linux clone of Macromedia apps
- No files released yet, still organizing
Lounge
- Flash animator that uses libXML, Ming, and GTK
- No files released yet
FlashBuilder
- "Free", apparently ad-ware?
- Windows only?
Just a thought.

Obviously you're not a Real Geek (tm) - the only place we eat is in front of the computer.
SAP DB is a true, tested enterprise database - did anybody out there start using it when SAP open sourced it? Anybody??

I know I get most of the components anywhere, but where the hell do you get the LCD????
I'm being extremely serious here - I'm in New Jersey, and being surrounded by walls of snow forces one to consider unorthodox options to eliminate it.
All you might be breaking are some environmental laws, and as long as you don't set trees on fire you should be fine, right?
