  1. you think he's paraniod? on Security for the Paranoid · · Score: 1
My boss recently asked me if there was a way to encrypt the mouse signal because it could possibly reveal where the info is displayed on the screen. He's also the one who refuses to use a KVM switch because de 3 caracters buffer could be read from a compromised machine and be used to peice together a password.

Yet if you call him up and say you were from MasterCard and asked for his info, he'd probably give'em up withtout a second thought. He's a manager after all... =)

Isn't this like, stating the obvious? We all know that if you place all MP3, p0rn and zeraw onto a single HD and it fails or gets lost, you just lost everything. Well the Earth is just one big basket and we're all eggs on it. If it "drops" we're all doomed for sure.

Oh there might be some survivors but in what state will there be and what kind of planet will be left? Of course this depends on what kind of event will occur but i won't go there. If it is a near extinction event and there are some survivors (and i don't want to be one!), they'll go back to the stone ages with village elders telling stories about people living in tall, straight mountains and moving around by sitting inside very fast things.

This smells a lot like the failed WindowsME. As i recall it was supposed to be the next grand thing in computing. A step as big as the one from Win3.1 to 95. It ended up as a mere add-on for Windows98 with more crashes-prone features than you can point a "shrug and reboot" attitude at!

If they keep droping ground breaking feature like that, in 2006 they'll be releasing a "Windows XP longhorn edition"! :-)

Not to mention that as soon as there is a *hint* of something broken (network lag, application crash, PC freeze, ...) It's immediatly "the computer guy's" fault. No matter that duffus two cubicles down the isle is trying to send a 50Mb attachement to the entire directory, but this suddently sluggish network is all IT's fault!!

What sets IT appart is that it doesn't matter who broke it or why, but you can bet that a computer or some IT guy is going to get blamed for it and will have to fix it pronto (of course that report it was due out yesterday!). I don't mind the fixing part, that's part of what i signed up for, but taking the blame for everything that goes *poof* in the building i could do without!

  8. In a police environement on Not-So-Clean Hard Drives For Sale · · Score: 5, Interesting
I work in a police force environement. They have a strict policy on hard drives: No hard drives ever leaves the HQ, unless it is sealed it it's original bag or to be used by a employee. If a PC or laptop has to be shipped to be repaired, we remove the drives. When we give our PCs to charity, they're HDless. Even faulty drives aren't thrown away. They're kept until someone decides to head to the incinerator and throw'em in themselves. Even if they're under warranty (and needs to be returned to be honored) we don't. We buy a new drive and that's it!

It'd figure other industries would do the same. Heck it's your business, your data, your life (well, only of part of it hopefully!) you have on these disk. Why bother with selling them? To get 20$ 50$? The way i see it, selling hard drives is equal to selling random filing cabinet without making sure they're empty.

    slightly off-topic side note:
Some officers here are so tight about security: One of out tech went out to replace a fried power supply. When walking out with the roasted one, one guy asked: "Hey couldn't there be data on there?" the tech answered a polite "no" with a smile. The guy handed him a pair of cutter and said:"Well why don't you cut-off those wires just to make sure" !! :-D
