  1. quick fix on Providers Ignoring DNS TTL? · · Score: 3, Informative

My dad uses Comcast and he kept calling me to "make the Internet work" during their recent DNS outages. I just SSH'd in to his router and added a Verizon DNS server (4.2.2.1) to his DHCP info, and his Internet worked right away. His neighbors were complaining they couldn't use the 'Net but he was surfing away just fine.

    I found their response amusing:
"What's really pathetic is not Verizon but this sort of lame Web site. In this day and age, anyone with a gripe can put up a Web site and make outrageous claims as the authors of this one did."

My mom is in charge of one of AWS's billing systems, so whenever I see her I always ask about it/the company, since I find that stuff really interesting. She told me that one of the biggest problems is some guy named "r0ml", who actually uses his geek-speak name when talking to people in person. AWS hired some bumblefuck VP a couple years ago (as BrookHarty said), who hired r0ml and a bunch of other cronies, and started screwing everything up. r0ml also apparently is constantly having the company fly him (first class, no less) across the country from Redmond, WA (AWS's HQ) to New York. I'm sure AWS's systems could be much better operated by Cingular.

It would be a lot simpler if Tech just added access points to all of the residence halls and allowed complete ubiquitos wireless coverage. I don't see why they're such nazis about residence halls -- maybe ResNet and OIT are having territory disputes.

  7. HD is worth it... on Tech Titans Prepare to Battle Over Next DVD Format · · Score: 2, Informative

As an owner of a HDTV set with a HD digital cable box, I can say that once you go to watching HDTV, you never want to go back to anything less.

If the new HD players were backwards compatible with current DVDs, I would be happy to go out and buy a new player. The HD experience really is worth the upgrade. The only concern I'd have is if studios would have to do a standard DVD and also a HD DVD for new releases. Maybe there would be a way to compromise to save money.

Progressive-scan DVDs look good, but I think that once people see what they're missing with the new format, they'd be willing to upgrade.

  8. Too limited on Hardware-Based Commute-Map Gadget · · Score: 2, Interesting

For those that live in the Seattle area, you'll notice that it just covers the Lake Union area, and just the freeways. This is great to check your freeway commute, but if you stray from the greater Seattle area or go on any side street or state route, it's useless. The WSDOT doesn't have the traffic monitoring systems set up anywhere else in the state. This isn't a navigation tool - it's a traffic monitor for the freeways. Useless, since you can get the same information every couple minutes on the radio.

They probably do more to "invade our privacy" than you think, already. I doubt they always go by the book hnting for terrorists..

It doesn't really bother me, however. It's not like "oh my god, they found out I just bought a jacket at J Crew by tracing my credit card... maybe they'll link that to the purchase my grandmother made for my birthday of a Sears coat and alert her that i did not really appreciate her gift!" It's not really a big deal (to me at least), and I honestly don't think you need to worry unless you're doing something illegal anyway.
