At its ideal best, the US is a society of ideas, and those ideas are expressed in laws. Previously, societies were based on ethnicity, race, religion or military prowess. In a society of ideas, disputes should not be decided by guns, or by priests. Who else, then? If we got rid of the lawyers we would need to replace them with something quite similar.

Is this "the answer" for our consumption and supply issues with gasoline? Of course not. There is not going to be a single answer, at least not until we figure out a better battery combined with a global solar grid. Meanwhile, prepare for a myriad of small solutions, like biodiesel, ethanol, heavy crude sources like tar sands and shale, converted coal, none of which are perfect on their own, but which, together, can bridge us to the next big thing.

The Linux OS (and basic productivity tools like mail, media, browsing) are ready, but where the heck are the apps? As a sound designer and web developer, I have yet to find a polished pro-level application in Linux. Where is the ftp program to compete with Transmit, Flow or Cyberduck? Where is the web animation program to complete with Flash? Where is the audio production software to compete with SONAR or Logic? While valiant efforts are under way, they pale in comparison to the apps available for OSX and Windows.

Digital degrades poorly. I'm about 20 miles from most of the nearest transmitters. The analog signals are fuzzy, but quite watchable. The digital signals are completely useless, frequently going to blue screen. I have tried multiple indoor and outdoor antennas with the same result. When analog signals go away, I'll be watching torrents, I guess.

You're missing the top level. In the US, all intellectual property is assumed to belong to the public. Copyright is an exception, with certain exceptions of its own (e.g. time limits, fair use). It does not imply ownership, but the right to make additional copies. Copyright has been continuously enlarged and expanded, but it is still the exception to the assumption of public domain.

You jest, but your point is a bit off the mark. Power stations run most efficiently when they run 24-7, but power use typically peaks in the afternoon. People charging their cars overnight may not actually tax the system as much as you think. Also, consider the fact that each plugin hybrid has the ability to generate electricity for the grid. With electricity rates that adjusted with demand, it might be possible to hook up your vehicle to provide power to the grid at peak hours, and then recharge itself at off hours.
