RattFink is right. It's not that complicated to find a service that automates all of this. Just like companies outsource their payroll, they can outsource sales tax.
At its ideal best, the US is a society of ideas, and those ideas are expressed in laws. Previously, societies were based on ethnicity, race, religion or military prowess.
In a society of ideas, disputes should not be decided by guns, or by priests. Who else, then? If we got rid of the lawyers we would need to replace them with something quite similar.
Compare to other geek favorites Stephen R Donaldson, Robert Jordan and George R. R. Martin. Unlike them, Stephenson finished an entire story in a single book. How terse of him!
I have read everything Stephenson has published, and Anathem is my favorite (loved the Cycle and Snow Crash, not too fond of Cryptonomicon).
I've had serious crashes in 10.5.2 with CoreAudio and Time Capsule, and many small annoyances with iChat, window behavior, Spaces, etc. Hopefully this fixes the bulk of them, at least the serious ones. So far, so good.
Is this "the answer" for our consumption and supply issues with gasoline? Of course not. There is not going to be a single answer, at least not until we figure out a better battery combined with a global solar grid. Meanwhile, prepare for a myriad of small solutions, like biodiesel, ethanol, heavy crude sources like tar sands and shale, converted coal, none of which are perfect on their own, but which, together, can bridge us to the next big thing.
For duelling anecdotes: My printer and scanner install on Hardy automatically. The printer won't install on Leopard without the driver disk, and the scanner won't install on Leopard at all (provided drivers only for WinXP and Mac OS9).
yes, though you have to click through a couple of dialog boxes for legal reasons. No more difficult than installing a plugin on your browser for Flash or Silverlight.
The Linux OS (and basic productivity tools like mail, media, browsing) are ready, but where the heck are the apps? As a sound designer and web developer, I have yet to find a polished pro-level application in Linux. Where is the ftp program to compete with Transmit, Flow or Cyberduck? Where is the web animation program to complete with Flash? Where is the audio production software to compete with SONAR or Logic? While valiant efforts are under way, they pale in comparison to the apps available for OSX and Windows.
Digital degrades poorly. I'm about 20 miles from most of the nearest transmitters. The analog signals are fuzzy, but quite watchable. The digital signals are completely useless, frequently going to blue screen. I have tried multiple indoor and outdoor antennas with the same result. When analog signals go away, I'll be watching torrents, I guess.
You're missing the top level. In the US, all intellectual property is assumed to belong to the public. Copyright is an exception, with certain exceptions of its own (e.g. time limits, fair use). It does not imply ownership, but the right to make additional copies. Copyright has been continuously enlarged and expanded, but it is still the exception to the assumption of public domain.
You jest, but your point is a bit off the mark. Power stations run most efficiently when they run 24-7, but power use typically peaks in the afternoon. People charging their cars overnight may not actually tax the system as much as you think. Also, consider the fact that each plugin hybrid has the ability to generate electricity for the grid. With electricity rates that adjusted with demand, it might be possible to hook up your vehicle to provide power to the grid at peak hours, and then recharge itself at off hours.
I agree, especially layer effects and better layer grouping. Also, better text tools and an export-for-web tool. The interface is not the problem for me.
Yeah, a dynamic range compressor on default settings will certainly replace pristine acoustics, session musicians, a qualified engineer, and professional mastering...
I bought a networked hp printer (2600n) because of recommendations such as this. It has proprietary drivers which have to be hacked to work with Linux. So it's not true that ALL HP printers have open source drivers.
OSX was worthless to me (as an audio engineer/sound designer) until they added Core Audio, which made professional audio tools possible. But it took too long. By then, all the cool kids had given up on ProTools and MOTU, and were using SONAR, Gigastudio, and Nuendo on Windows.
I've been getting my music either free or DRM-free or both from Emusic, Jamendo and Magnatune. I don't see any reason to start paying for mainstream music again.
Photoshop also has excellent text tools, compared to the rudimentary tools in GIMP, and the excellent "Save for Web" feature, which makes it easy to compare the size and quality of png, gif and jpg options for your image exports.
I'm really excited about this. As a web developer, I prefer open source tools, but there aren't any animation and media streaming tools that can approach the power of flash.
While there are open source flash players out there, I don't know of any equivalent IDEs, so I will be taking a close look at Moonlight, and Silverlight adoption on the client side.
College students, stay-at-home moms and retirees are three examples of groups who will work if work is available, but will stay at home if a good job is hard to find.
Religions are given tax-exempt status in the US because of the separation of church and state. It has nothing to do with whether they do charitable work.
Worthless? Time is priceless. It's the only thing that, once you give it away, you can't get it back. Unlike money or love, time only ever flows in one direction.

GIMP's text tools are rudimentary compared to Photoshop's. That's another reason I haven't made the switch.

On any Mac, Ctrl + Click brings up the contextual menu.

aimed at military, aeronautics, etc. But it sounds perfect for audio and video production.
You left out the steam going to Tropicana. I would guess that a large percentage of trash and sewage is water.
