You are correct, generally speaking... I was referring more to the 'rights' that we gave up than the local laws. Also, in the Navy at least, we operated mostly under international law, so perhaps there are some differences depending on location. To be honest, I never faced a situation where application of the UCMJ was tested, so I know more what we had to memorize than anything 'practical' :P

    1) It was secure. Since you could never get it to network to anything, it could not be hacked from the Internet
    2) It ran. With a 15 second reboot even on my old machine, a freeze was no more than a minor annoyance
    3) (This is a serious one) For all the hassle of having to configure this and IRQ that, anyone using MS-DOS had to have at least a working knowledge of computers.
    4) Reinstall took less than 10 minutes. Just keep a boot disk handy and copy the whole DOS directory from your .ZIP file and *bam* done.

Well, the $100,000,000.00 price tag is more than ample for most endeavors. With $20,000,000.00 of that (1/5) going to a single big name star, it's no wonder they can no longer produce quality movies for under $1,000,000.00. But I seem to recall a lot of slightly older movies (i.e. 80's) managing that very feat. And somehow, I doubt inflation over ten years is over 100%...

  17. Incoherence? Star Wars? on Animated Star Wars on Cartoon Network · · Score: 2, Interesting

Let's take an objective (yeah, right) look at the Star Wars universe...

First we have episodes 4,5, and 6. Taken in their own right they are a coherent plot spread over three movies, holding a single universe intact.

Then add the many, many books and references, written after episodes 4-6. While each stands well in it's own right, very rarely do two seperate authors works integrate into the overall universe. The books have covered timeframes before the as yet unreleased episodes 1-3, after them, in between them, and anywhere else the authors felt prudent. The Star Wars universe has now grown more complex and massive than congruent unto itself.

Then add the role playing games, cartoons, comics, etc. Over 20 years a lot of Star Wars information has come out.

Now we come to the present, where Lucas is releasing episodes 1-3, and in so doing is pretty much ignoring everything other than the episodes 4-6, thus breaking what little (if any) continuity remains.

So I would expect that any efforts to make a cartoon based off the movies would just further complicate and already messy universe.

This seems to me like trying to build a Beowulf Cluster by combining 8086's running Minix, 2/386's running DOS, Mac IIgs's running MacOS, and whatever else happens to have been built over the last 20 years. Doable, but not easy or effective.

  18. Why I can't switch (YET) on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

While I would absolutely LOVE to get out of Windows, several major issues arise every time I try to completely switch:

    1) My employer is all Microsoft. Since I work as a programmer, that means I have to have compatible software available at home. Unfortunately, there is no BASIC language cross platform, and since they are Visual Basic centric, that is a VERY limiting factor.
    2) I have yet to find a stable, versatile music compilation suite for Linux. While I know there are wave editors, etc seperately, I need a completely interoperative suite. Wave editor, Loop Sequencer, MIDI sequencer and renderer, Redbook compliant CD imager, etc. And I do not have the time to write all those, nor the technical knowledge of audio.
    3) The Gimp is an excellent cross platform image tool, Linux appears to be lacking in good high end animation and 3D modeling programs.
    4) WINE may be great for some games, but I have not to date been able to get it to work effectively. I can get edit this config or vi that or whatever, but that means wasting my time there instead of working or playing.

It all really boils down to one issue: Open Source is great, but the plethora of software I need and use is not yet available meeting the following requirements:
    1) Easy to install and configure. RPM is a stride in the right direction, but the dependency model has me downloading for hours just to install simple programs.
    2) Runs stably every time. This one is the main shortfall in my view, much of the software is still too new to have serious usability testing or stability testing. I am willing to Beta Test if needed, and I do put my money where my mouth is when I can.
    3) Interoperability. Open Office is great for that, and I have eliminated M$ Office except for Access. But in other areanas, Linux software still falls short.

I would imagine that you could build a collection of libraries, using a well defined interface, with precompiled object code for each platform and tie into thiose in the mainline routines using late binding. The advantage is since you control all the libraries, the binding method can be abstracted by an API specific to your industry, and 'DLL Hell' avoided by proper planning.

This would allow smaller primary binaries, and would allow upgrading part of the project without changing the whole... also, the reusable functions can be tested using known results from other platforms.

The less you have to recompile for each change, the easier the Makefiles etc are to maintain.
