  1. Re:not a worm or a virus! on Computer 'Worms' Turn on Macs · · Score: 1

Granted a trojan is not necessarily a worm, but a trojan definitely IS a virus.
Trojans are a SUBSET of viruses that don't always self-replicate, but that lie in wait until some condition arises to activate the code to deliver its payload.

Even calling these Mac viruses "trojans" is quite a stretch, because installing it by entering an admin password, or running the executable is not enough to be able to call this a trojan. If it were enough, then we'd have to categorize ALL viruses as trojans because they are "activated" by being installed, or are activated by installing itself, or been activated by discovering an open port etc,
and so had lied in wait on someone else's system for the opportunity to attack our machine.

But regardless of whether or not the Mac virus is a trojan, saying a trojan isn't a virus is like saying a Lion isn't a cat.
It's still a virus, but with additional specific characteristics that differentiate it from viruses in general.

I'm sorry,...did I say Microsoft was slow at "inventing" the idea?
That context doesn't even make SENSE. Each browser doesn't INVENT the idea, they SUPPORT it.

    READ THE ARTICLE.
(Or at least read the submitter's comments)

MS's IE never conformed to the commonly accepted convention for the XMLHTTPRequest. Their "XMLHTTPRequest" object jumped from name to name almost with each new version of the browser. The post itself names ONE of the previous naming conventions right out, "Microsoft.XMLHTTP". Developers wanting to support IE could hardly keep up, and old pages would break with each new version. This is why this change to IE is good, (although not really newsworthy).

Just because MS may have had the idea a while ago doesn't mean they IMPLEMENTED it correctly (as most other browsers had).
Otherwise, what is the point of this article even making?
Which by the way, I didn't submit this article, so it's not MY bubble your futile attack was trying to burst, but the submitter's (Zonk's) or the author of the article, (A MS employee. A Program Manager in the Internet Explorer team no less!).

Didn't quite see the submitter's point?
(Well I didn't think I'd have to, but) I'll spoon-feed it to you.
The article's point was that MS is just now doing it NA-TIVE-LY.
Say it with me again.....NaaaaTiiivvvveLlyyyy. That's right. Sound it out.
Read the post & article, pay close attention to Zonk's words: "as many other browsers currently do."
So FYI, it was MOZILLA that was first across that line, not MS.
And what is the Firefox browser based on? ...It's ok...we all already know... ...it's in Firefox's full name.... MOZILLA.
(And yes I know Firefox isn't the original Mozilla browser...But who would choose the original Mozilla browser over Firefox?)

Regardless of any of that, what's your point?
Mine was that this article isn't newsworthy, and that IE is a buggy MS product that's far too easy to crash. (and so people should use Firefox in my opinion.)

I was merely restating the point of the article, and Zonk's point, to make my own point in a humorous way.

Don't believe me about any of it? Read up. (and pay attention this time)

Besides, the points are moot in that they aren't really reasons Ajax 'sucks',
They're just pitfalls that novice programmers will fall into.
Experienced/thoughtful developers will be mindful of these pitfalls and know how to handle them.

And the point that search engines don't know how to navigate Ajax enabled pages, is asinine.
Ajax isn't anything NEW anyways, it's just a new BRANDING (read naming/use) of OLD technologies (JavaScript & XML), and engines have been capable of handling them for YEARS (or even decades).
Besides, Google can navigate them, and any other respectable engine will be able too, (if not the engine isn't worth using anyways). (Infact, many google pages MAKE USE of Ajax)
And even if SOME engines can't navigate them NOW, doesn't mean we should stagnate progress.
If sites DON'T implement Ajax, engines will have NO REASON to support Ajax navigation. /Wasn't worth my time, but I'm REALLY sick of seeing these pointless Ajax bashing articles/posts.

Why can't we do that with the entertainment 'industry'?
    An example:
"I just bought this Adam Sandler CD, with him in makeup on it. It's NOT FUNNY. It's not what I ordered. I paid for somthing of value, not a CD spoon-feeding me all Sandler's old tired skits to me!"

Hopefully Apple and Microsoft will take note and follow suit.
Like when you buy a FULL album from iTunes, they should send you the HARD copy as well since it cost them NOTHING to make a copy of the digital version.
And the Bull-Shiat that Compaq, Microsoft and PC manufacturers pull when your BUY a pc and are charged for a Windows license, (In Compaq's (now HP)'s case), only to be given a 'restore partition' on the hard drive (which is easily damaged or corrupted). If I buy a license, I EXPECT a physical CD in case the shoddy software/hardware craps out and takes my copy with it.

I was lucky enough in '99 to buy a Dell and they included a backup Dell image cd AND the Win98se install cd with manual. But then in 2003 when I bought my shitty Alien-Crap-Ware laptop I specifically asked the customer service agent if by paying on their website for "a copy of WinXP pro" if I'd be getting a install CD and not just a partition or just a manufacturer restore cd, and they said it would be a WinXP cd. Bullshit. It was a restore cd.

It's good to see some companies are taking steps to actually provide a valid service rather than fleece their customers, for pure-profit 'digital merchandise'.
