  1. Reading code is no good to start with. on Tools For Understanding Code? · · Score: 1

There are some people here who says that you should read and understand the code but that is just stupid to start reading the code. The best thing to do is to use tools to analyze the code with tools so that you can look at the system at different abstraction levels. People that say that you should start at code level have probably never had a real job or have never seen a system with 50k+ loc. When i analyze a system i use grep, sed and graphviz to draw various diagrams for me at different levels. In that way i can understand the sytem much quciker and i dont have to understand all the details directly. After that i can zoom in to the details by starting at the right parts of the system. So try to find good tools and if you cant find any try to use graphviz in combination with your text processing tools of choice.

It isnt about programming language that affect speed it is about how good IDE i have. Even if python or Ruby has fewer characters or lines it doesnt matter since eclipse autogenerates almost anything in java. Speed is all about IDE .. and since you can use a complex language with the speed of a script language you get more control since it has strong typing and better support for object orientation which make large applications less errorprone.

IGameSaver* saver = gameSaverFactory.Create(); saver->Save( gamedata ); Kind of like that.. so that the saving of game data is separated from the data model. This gives me the abillity to save to disk or network or any place i want by just making a new class that implements the IGamesaver interface.

  6. COTS's on Custom Software vs. COTS Products · · Score: 1

The projects i have been involved in has allways used one or two 3rd part components and even though we delivered the software we were not 100% happy with the results. When we first started using them all seemed find but as we used them more and more we discovered that they did not really match our requirements. So from now on i will probably still use COTS but im going to be very careful when selecting them. I think the best way is to make a requirement list of what type of component is needed and then select one that fits those requirements best. After that it is probably best to build a prototype to test those requirements. Relying on 3rd party components is a risky bussiness but if you use them with care they can save u some money and time.
