I think that the internet can be made alot more attractive so that it will be considered as essential as a telephone. It will save money if fire, burglary, and medical protection is provided. The isp should poll all computers at least once a minute to make sure no one has cut the cable to anyone's home. I see cameras placed is strategic places to verify either a burglary or fire alarm. I see heart monitors to communicate heart attacks to hospitals. I think people will demand this service as much as they demand the telephone.
The language of the future will be open source so that all objects no matter where or when they are written will be available to all the other computers. The number of objects will no doubt number in the trillions and will require a very fast computer just to determine which one is best for a given task.
I have a dream for a much better world. A world in which almost all buildings are underground. All homes would be built underground with a totally automatic underground transportation system conection them. Living underground with no above ground roads would mean one could allow one's children to play without fear of being involved in a automobile accident. Moving about would require the use of public transportation and the approval of the owner of where ever one wanted to visit. All movement would be recorded by a computer. All the land in one's neighborhood would be private land so the only legal way to get there would be the puplic transportation.
There are alot of uses for broadband other than the browising the internet. This would make it very easy to put all our electrical devices online. If a device was stolen and pluged in its location should be imediately available to the police. Fire detectors should be of the plug in with battery and be able to notify the fire department of an alarm. For backup there should be a way to send the temperature of the house with the alarm. It should always be known if a conection exist for every home so that if someone or a natural cause should disrupt that connection that something should be done. For the disabled and elderly a medical alarm could be set up. The existing electrical wiring in almost every room would make it easier to set up.
This would be tremendously useful if someone could figure out how to allow one to go to a store and have both movies and music copied onto the drive. Just think a store could have every copy of every movie and cd ever made and never worry about going out of stock. Someday when one can download at a speed of more than 1 Mega Byte per second than we could eliminate the store and just download our entertainment. At a cost of a dollar per giga byte than it would be cheap enough to store movies(about $4 per movie).
Someone should figure out the odds of mankind producing a space elevator. If the odds are even somewhat good that we will eventually produce such a device than we should reduce our spending till such a device is produced. I think that every dollar spent today would produce 100 times the results if we waited until that time.

People will live in large apartment buildings with totaly sound proof apartments. Transportation will be acomplished by totaly automatic vehicle which will go to one's front door. Only if permission is granted will one be able to get to any door other than one's own. All buildings and roads will be underground. Geniticlly modified seeweed will be produce for the right material to sustain live. It will be liquidified and transported like water. There will be no kitchen. All work will be done remotely with robots controlled by humans who are in their home. Video screens will give the illusion of being anywhere so there will be no windows. One will be able to live a lifetime without seeing or hearing their neighbor. Almost all jobs will be in the medical field. One will report on the effects of taking diffent types of seeweed. Drugs will make one feel 10 times better and longer than sex without any side effects. Apartments will be build to last centuries so will be owned by the government which will settle with the estate of the user when the user dies. Thus food and housing will be a right enjoyed by everyone. Everyone will have a electronic friend which will have acess to all knowledge. All this will be acomplished with the use of a very small amount of energy and materials compared to what is used today.
I agree 100 per cent. How many more years before they can make a chip which could hold a movie and have no moving parts and be cheap enough. Better I believe that it will not be long before video on demand will allow one copy of a movie to be viewed by millions of people on demand. All storage should be on a central server thus relieving everyone of the problems of maitaining storage.
I agree that by the time this drive is available that only the ISP will need such a large hard drive. I believe we will be transmitting data at or around 10Mbit per second. At that speed a ISP could store all the software and data(movies and music). The ISP would then maintain the drive and its data and free the home user whose computer will then be smaller that a paper back book.
