  1. Re:Huh? on 3D Libraries for a Budding Game Programmer? · · Score: 1

Just in case this ain't really a troll, or in case somebody wonders if this is true or not...

A graphic arstist design models in 3dstudio for example. But what he's really generating is just a file with vertex coordinates in it. If you load it in 3dStudio, you see a model because 3dstudio coders wrote a bunch of code to interpret the file, and have the computer draw a 3d representation of those coordinates.
Now if you program a game for example, you just gotta do the same job yourself. ie transform the coordiates into an object on screen, plus you gotta make it move, etc...

Here you see Java scoring 703 vs. C's 752 in a wide range of unbiased speed tests. Do you have anything to back up your claim?

Sorry but these tests ignore the area where java speed really sucks : the GUI, of course.
Who cares about the time it takes to concatenate strings or instantiate a class... the only thing you see as a user is the GUI. It's like that feeling you have when you just bought a new pc, everything seems to render much faster than before when you click menus etc (ok that's on windows ;) except with java it's the opposite ! that simple thing makes java apps not pleasant to use to me.
However server side this is a different problem of course. I admit java has a real strength here, even if I hate using it.
(What I personally hate about java is that it I feel it turns what could be cool hacks into what I like to call a massively boring shit ;) Maybe I didn't get enough into it to be able to fully appreciate it...

It is a rather common misconception that bytecode-compiled languages must necessarily be slower than native compiled languages. The opposite is actually true in many cases. If you are running your bytecode on some sort of interpreter, then yes, it will be slower, but typically bytecode is re-compiled to native code at runtime. When this happens, the compiler can perform all sorts of optimizations specific to the host machine, OS, and the exact library set in use, which would be impossible if the software were distributed as native code. Thus, the code actually ends up faster... in Java's case, it can approach the speed of C

Nice theory, now can you explain me why every java apps that I've run is at least 10x slower than their C equivalent ?

Understanding comics is really a must read for everybody. Even if you don't like comics at all, there are some astonishing ideas disseminated in the book. To me, this guy is the RMS (or ESR ?) of comics. This is a sort of meta book on comics, what they are, why they talk to us, and (the really exiting part) where they could go from now, using modern medias. (ie : unlike a textbook, a web page has no borders and should probably be used in a different way.) And not only he talks about it, but he proves it !

Futhermore, one thing really shocked me in the book : how the use of comics to explain ideas is a real plus if it is well used. I do think that using this technique, McLoud could probably explain ASM to your grandma and she'd just say : "yeah easy". Just read it !

Textbooks (well high school ones) also make a big deal about the German panzer divisions, but sometimes forget to mention that the French tanks were superior. The Germans just knew how to use them better.

That's absolutly false. I just asked a friend of mine who is fond of WW2 history to be sure I wasn't mistaking. German tanks were better than anything that existed at the time.
