Several times recently we have had opportunities to have contracts with public shops, like governemental agencies and the like.
They all sent us loads of papers describing what type of architecture they expected, and what rules we'd have to follow. What they all want to ear is : open standards, evolutivity, free (as in beer) libraries, maximum portability, and connectivity.
Now, guess what they like to hear between J2EE, jakarta libs, JNDI, linux, or....NET, microsoft, sqlserver, licencing ?? It seems big shops really start to get the point about the advantages of open standards.
(Note : I'm talking about french agencies, it might not be true everywhere. But I suspect most european countries are following those lines too.)
At least they won't feel obliged to shell out the bucks to see the sequel of a good movie and end up watching one of the shittiest movies I've ever seen.
Yes i was *very* disappointed, and all the people I know too. Half the movie they're ranting about the messiah, the other half is 15 mins straight battles with totally displaced GFX effects just to "look kewl" (Ok, it was fun the first time, but here it is just too much). The end sucks big time too..
The first Shinobi wasn't that hard if you played it the right way, ie learnt the whole game by heart as you played it, or watched others play it. After six months I could go through the whole game with only one credit (and died on the last boss every time pfeew). I want to be 12 again, those times where fun:^)
I know someone who owns a xbox. What I'd really like to see is the fan(s?) disappear, or be really quieter. Because it really sucks for a gaming machine to make so much noise, especially when used as a DVD player... Dunno about other consoles, but if I had to buy one I'd certainly compare the fans noise.
My brother owns one of these. We found it very sluggish at the beginning before we figured out that when we thought we closed an app, it was just minimized...
I just used it five minutes myself, and what really got on my nerves was all the microsoft-ish things like having to register to use the file explorer, then realizing that the registration server is down... (took two days before my brother could reach it). Then you can't install the apps because they're not signed, wonder why, and figure that developpers have to pay something like $500 to microsoft so they "review the code".
I'm not an anti microsoft zealot, but I think it was my phone it would have finished its life explosed on the wall after a few hours out of frustration
Just start playing all day and night while she's there. She'll leave you for her mother after a week, but will be back after a month for sex like all the other ones ! Then just pretend you were so sad that you left your job etc, and go on playing while she's looking for a job in town trying to repair her big mistake. After a few month she'll leave you so harvest a new one in the meantime while she's at her new work.
In the software world who hasn't heard of RMS?
The software world isn't limited to hackers... Most people have heard of linux, some of them know who Linus is, a little percentage know RMS, but nobody know what the FSF is.

I found the only really interesting trick in the book was the one about ssh. (involves piping a tarred stream though ssh and treating it on the other end , like tar czf linux|ssh roberto "cd/usr/src; cat >linux.tar.gz).
If you use shells most of the time you probably know most of the others, and alot of them are really just explanations of the commands, like the whole chapter on CVS.
On the other hand, I added yesterday "Unix Power Tools", to my safari bookshelf and this one really absolutly rocks ! Not quite like a cookbook, it's more like a guide to get the most of Unix. Even on very basic subjects, and even if each topic is generally concise, I found alot of things I had never heard of. And i'm really learning alot about using the shell itself. I realized there are a lot more nice features to help edition the combination of emacs bindings and C-r. The authors not just tell you "this feature do that", but demonstrate how they use it all the time in their day to day job. There are alot of things that I thought were useless for me but it all makes sense while reading this book. And I've not really looked into the others chapters yet, but they look as good as this one.
In fact those books aren't even comparable : one will be read in one day and after having noted the things you'll find inside it'll sleep on your shelf. The other one will give you an insight each time you open it, and you'll open it often.
I'm sure we'll find that those pesky aliens just encoded an alien goatse jpg into a radio wave and sent it to us so we could compare. Yay, aliens slashdotters are no different, what did you think ?
Seriously, if they let you have a blank password, it's their fault. They know alot of their users do not know about security problems, so they should lead them, and maybe give a simple explanation...
Yes, but I think it is considered as the standard because it has been for long the only calculation method used. Then manufacturers started to change the calculation method without specifying it... I might be wrong, I just remember that a friend told me that. (He builds speakers as a hobby.) Anyhow, the only way to buy speakers is to listen to them, not to look at the specs !
Never believe what they say on the specs about Watts if it's not written RMS Watts. (the only standardized way to mesure Watts). And if they are really serious they'll speak about Db, not Watts.
Also you don't want to listen to a 1000 RMS Watts speaker in your comfy little room, believe me... Probably your windows would break and your ears wouldn't like it at all. A concert room or a stadium is another story...
My little brother had one. I think the console was not that expensive, but the games where about $300 when the console first came out !
(The cartidges where enormous ! bigger than a VHS commercial covers I remember)
Then prices dropped until they reached $150 I think, and it seems NEO GEO transformed their console into a real arcade machine after that... It really had the guts to do it
huh ?
What they all want to ear is
;)
Note that on the other hand, it seems J2EE is trying to invade my language

Serious question: Will this bit work over Carrier Pigeon?
Actually, it depends : an european pigeon, or a south african one ?

This thing has the power to make Diablo2 even less interesting ? How cool...
Hello myself, I just added "remember not to post on slashdot just after having some pot" with the post-its on my screen. :)
Cheers!
Even simple concepts like "red" or "tall" don't have universally accepted definitions; why should "planet"?
because "red" and "tall" are adjectives. Planet is a noun, so it should have a clear definition of what it is.
