What's funny is he presents it like Dr. Evil. "Throw me a friggin bone here."
Heh.
"I'm so clever, I made you.. well sort of.. post a bunch of stuff here that'll lower your karma. Of course, you can't see the karma you've lost, so you'll just.. uh.. have to imagine it. And without that karma you'll.. uh.. not see any difference what soever on Slashdot. So take THAT!"
"Here's the clue - making a whole bunch of posts that nobody moderates up saps your karma, albiet slower than if they were actively moderated down. In case you hadn't noticed, you two have been suckered in to making plenty of them"
"Heh! Is that the best you got? "Take that, email boy!"
heheh he's trying pitifully hard over in his thread with me as well. Poor guy has an obsession with felching. He's the first guy I ever talked to that was into that.
"Wanna talk about how WinCE is only for PDAs some more?"
What's the matta? Don't want to talk about my topic?
"Or how about you not even knowing what priority-inversion is?"
Well, we could talk about how your highest priority is to insult me, but the result is the opposite. Instead, I'm smiling. I suppose if we wanted to talk in metaphors about what a priority inversion is, we could discuss your behaviour thus far.
"In this thread, all you are qualified for is to suck on nah-noggin-nator's felch."
You seem quite one-tracked about the topic of felching. Got something on your mind there, buddy? Maybe you should whack off before responding to me, that way you won't use the same lame insult twice in a row.
Well I don't know his motives, but you're right, he is trying a little too hard to win. He really is threatened by you. That's why he's posting anonymously. If he can't succeed, at least nobody knows who he is.
Oh, my ICQ doesn't work btw. That's why I didn't message you last night. I'll boot back into Windows tonight. I can't believe those idiots think so highly of Linux, it's a fight just to get anything to work!
"Uh, you didn't put any such argument forth, maybe someone else did prior to your postings, but they were smacked down with this, perhaps you remember reading it."
"You don't know jack-shit about embedded OSes if you think they are all simple. Ever implement *fast* priority inheritance and/or priority ceilings? Ever take a look at what even a "simple" automotive assembly-line robot has to contend with?"
If they're soOOOo complex, then how come Linux hasn't been able to approach Windows in the desktop arena?
"As for MS not pursuing embedded systems very hard, you just haven't been paying attention, WinCE went from a joke to a scary serious contender in like 3 years. "
Idiot. Windows CE isn't their embedded systems OS, it's their Pocket PC OS. They have an embedded version of Windows NT as well. Again, they haven't pushed it very hard.
"MS is desperate to have WinCE dominate the market for embedded systems."
They don't want Windows CE controlling cars, they want CE controlling PDAs and other devices that they can produce apps for.
Good job on completely avoiding desktop argument I put forth. What's the matter? Got to drift off course to keep up?
Embedded devices run a very simple OS doing very simple tasks. Worse, they are mass-produced and do not vary like PC's do. Should I mention that Microsoft hasn't chased the embedded market very hard?
So you guys chose to limit the scope to what Linux does well, and completely avoid the market where Windows is king. Never mind that Linux has had not one, but 2 good user friendly OS's to copy off of all this time. Gee. And NG was accused of narrowing the scope in a 'Microserf' kind of way.
Admit it, you all were just being assholes. You got lucky he didn't want to carry on the fight.
"I say this because I know the Windoze fanboys will try to find an excuse like "Oh, you have a bad motherboard" or "Oh, you must have an incompetent Windows admin".
Don't be so quick to assume that the "Windoze fanboys" are just trying to find an excuse. For your 3 machines that have had these problems, I can personally account for 20 that all behaved quite admirably. Personally, I think you had crummy machines too. Not because I love Microsoft, but because my personal direct experience tells me otherwise. It's not limited to just the machines where I work either, I know a lot of people all running 2k.
Sad thing is, Microsoft is often blamed for problems caused by other vendors.
"The fact that the Xbox uses the same architecture as a PC doesn't make it a PC?"
Nope. You can't even boot a PC OS into it. That's by design, because it's a game console.
"The fact that the PS2 and Dreamcast use a different architecture than PCs thus makes them PCs?"
Reread what I said.
"Yeah, some people probably would. Then again, some people would buy it, like some people bought the PS2 Linux Kit. So what?"
So what? The point is that Microsoft won't satisfy anybody until they turn off the bits that make it a game console and turn it into a PC.
"Oh really? NOT! "
That's your rebuttal? NOT? Geez dude. You can boot a Dreamcast into BSD without needing to circumvent anything.
"The Sony kit isn't $250."
oh, sorry, it's $200. Man that really shattered my argument. Hehe. Yep, $50 made all the difference to what I said. Yep yep.
"You can access all of the 3D hardware. Don't believe me?"
I retract that. They either updated the Linux software, or I was confused with Yaroze.
"Weighing what you had to say? If you had actually been weighing what I had to say, you'd realize that I've been supporting Microsoft the whole time. "
Okay, I'm curious. How?
"I think that in actuality, you're the one who can't come to terms with the fact that you hate Microsoft."
Nope, I don't hate Microsoft.
"Your signature reads, "Linux: Where do you want to stay today?", leading me to believe that you are, in fact, a Linux zealot."
No. That sig was inspired by a thread on Slashdot about Longhorn. Suddenly everybody was like "We don't want these new graphic things!" So, to make fun of them, I changed my sig to say "Linux, where do you want to stay today?" as if to say "we don't want Linux to evolve" That sig doesn't imply that I hate Linux, just poking a little fun at some of the Slashdot community.
"Anyone with a such a deep Microsoft hatred as yours is a borderline psychotic, and probably a communist. You should just admit it to yourself and seek counseling."
Heheh that made me laugh.
BTW, sorry about the "you hate microsoft' comment I made. That was out of line.
"That was 5 years ago. I wonder what they're running on their desktops today?"
The studios you've named are not the entire 3D world. If you were a little more informed on this topic, you'd know that 3D Studio MAX and Lightwave both hold a very significant chunk of the 3D market, yet they do not run on Linux.
Movie FX is not the entire 3D industry, not even close.
"Did you even read the link? An Xbox shares 99% of its hardware with current PCs."
Irrelevant.
"The PS2 and Dreamcast are not based on the PC architecture. They are completely different hardware."
Irrelevant. Once you can get in to the machine, you can make stuff work on it. Dreamcast has all kinds of apps for it, Sega didn't restrict it the same way Sony did.
"What I am claiming is that they handled the situation differently than Microsoft."
Yes, they did handle it differently. And if Microsoft provided that option, everybody here'd be mad about it. "WTF? I have to buy a $250 kit to boot into Linux? WTF? Only people who have the $250 kit can use the app? WTF? I can't get at 3D bits of the video card?"
"Considering that I'm writing this on Windows XP in IE, your argument is specious at best."
That doesn't stop you from hating MS. And even if you don't, you're certainly willing to hang Microsoft over it without giving it a second thought. If I had reason to think you were at least weighing what I had to say, even if you end up disagreeing, then I'd take that comment back and even apologize.
No you can't. You have to buy the Linux kit which makes the PS2 bootable under Linux. On top of that, it's crippled so you can't access all the neat little things the PS2 can do in hardware. You can't even make an app and give it to somebody else unless they have that ~$250 kit.
If you're going to argue a point, want to be at least a little informed about it?
Um.. no it isn't. Unless you want to count the PS2 and the Dreamcast as PC's, you can't claim Microsoft's is suddenly one. They may have similar components, but that does not a PC make. You can give a man a baboon's heart, but he doesn't suddenly become a baboon.
"Lies. That's because they don't need to be ported. "
*Yawn*
"Sony is a completely different story."
Your example is flawed.
a.) It's a product. You can't go download an.ISO of Linux for the Playstation 2.
b.) It's crippled. You don't have access to all the hardware with it.
c.) You can't write an app and provide it to other PS2 owners unless they have that kit.
Why don't you just own up to the fact that the only reason you're arguing with NG is that you hate Microsoft? You're using reasoning that you'll only apply to Microsoft, but it doesn't apply to other players in the same space. You don't see the problem with that?
"Downloading mp3 of music that you do not own is illegal. I taught my son a lesson by destroying his iBook. The lesson is that if you work hard and save your money to buy something, once you break the law with it, it will be taken away. By the time he saves enough to buy another laptop (which will be around two years based on his after school pay check) he will have learned that he was doing something bad and wont do it again."
Don't sell people digital content! It'll turn everybody into a pirate and put you out of business! You must DRM it to the point that nobody can use it.
Hey.. that was pretty good. I'm gunnin for Jack Valenti's job now.
"Same story, different day: "Microsoft seeks absolute control."
Yeah because MS has done nothing but control everything they touch. Oh wait! It only seems that way because Slashdot puts such a strange spin on everything! MS does nothing but control everything.
