ABS is not invoked automatically based on criteria which the driver has no control over
Yes, it is.
I would think that your paranoia would be even stronger in reference to ABS, since it is indeed invoked automatically based on wheel slippage, which is totally out of thr driver's control, and the effect is to RELEASE the brakes (off and on, actually), not APPLY the brakes.
And, there's no intelligence involved in either case, ABS or radar-braking. It's just sensor->look-up-table->actuator. It's a simple control system, not adaptive, predictive, or neural-net in nature -- how could this be called intelligence?
IBA provides for 2.5Gb/s per lane, with a max of 12 lanes. PCI-Express has a max of 32 lanes, also at 2.5Gb/s, so PCI-Express has much higher bandwidth than IBA, and more variety in choices (IBA: 1x, 4x, 12x; PCI-Express: 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 32x).
PCI-Express and IBA both support QoS.
PCI compatibility would be impossible for IBA -- totally different protocol.
Sorry to rain on your conspiracy parade, and I'm not sure who "they" refers to in your post, but the "they" that will be using PCI-Express (at least at first: servers) did (and still does) use PCI-X. And Intel did not make PCI-Express. Intel is one of the members of PCI-SIG, which is the spec-making org for PCI-X and PCI-Express (and all other PCI flavors) but they didn't make it.
In fact, PCI-X is the most common bus in servers these days. If you mean why didn't PCI-X make it into desktop PC's, well, because the smaller size and hot-plug wasn't reason enough to warrant the cost increase. PCI-Express is another story.
FYI, the PCI history goes like this:
PCI 1.0 (1992): plug & play! 33MHz
PCI 2.0 (1993): power mhgmt
PCI 2.1 (1994): 66MHz/3.3V
PCI 2.2 (1998): Hot plug 1.0
PCI-X 1.0 (1999): mini PCI
PCI-X 1.0b/2.0 (2002) Hot plug 1.1
PCI 2.3, 3.0 (2002) new features?
PCI-Express 1.0 (2003) see below
There's a lot more to PCI-Express than people here seem to realize:
cost is same or less than PCI (system level)
scalable support for multiple market segments: mobile, desktop, server, comm devices
allows balancing feature sets to target market segments
estimated ~10 year life expectancy given scalability
boot existing OSes with no changes, use existing components with no changes
point-to-point full-duplex interconnect
differential low-voltage signaling
scalable frequency (2.5Gb/s initially)
scalable width (2.5Gb/s times 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, or 32)
low latency and high utilization
PCIPM software compatible
fully-packetized split-transaction protocol
credit-based flow control (credits applicable per link)
heirarchical topology support
virtual channel mechanism (independent paths, traffic class labeling, up to 8 VC's, software mappable)
enhanced config and power mgmt (no more complex side-band messaging, in-band support)
RAS (reliability, accessibility, scalability): CRC-based data integrity checks, hot-plug, surprise removal, advanced error logging and reporting
PCI-express (up to 32x) has almost nothing in common with IBA (12x) other than being both serial and using packet data. PCI-express is also a lot faster than IB.
what happens when some idiot without "crash detection" rams my rear end because the brakes came on too suddenly
What makes you think that the brakes would come on "too suddenly"? Moreover, I would think that a person, especially in a panic moment, would be much more likely to brake "too suddenly" than an automatic system (which is part of the reason that Anti-Lock Brakes are so popular). Should ABS be outlawed because they can stop a car faster than a human foot, creating the rear-end hazard you mention.

ADHD, ADD, and many other disorders and syndromes APPEAR to me to be better (more usefully) described as an obsession with being noted as a "victim" by the rest of society. Problem is, everyone is a "victim" of the symptoms of these disorders at one time or another, so it's a hard sell.
So, the onus of proof is on you. You can't make unsupported claims and then cry "you can't prove me wrong" when you're questioned. Thinking people will simply start ignoring you, disorder and all.

During the 1998 NIH Consensus Development Conference on Attention-
deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (or ADHD) evidence was presented indicating
wide variations in clinical and research approaches for identifying and
diagnosing ADHD. This variation reflects the lack of an objective assessment tool in ADHD diagnosis and the paucity of normative information on the developmental progression of ADHD-relevant cognitive functions (e.g., attention regulation, impulse control). The lack of agreement also likely stems from the absence of a theoretical consensus of underlying causes, or pathways, specific to ADHD. Variations in theory and diagnostic strategy make theoretically driven assessment tools and etiology-targeted treatment procedures difficult. Wide variations in diagnostic strategy underscore the need for pragmatic assessment tools amenable for use in the major systems of service entry points for children with ADHD symptoms, such as primary care settings.
Please allow me to translate (and embellish) this for the laypersons:
We don't really know what ADHD is, what causes it, how it works, how to diagnose it, or even if it's anything more than a mere label which has recently become popular because of its ability to fulfill a strong desire on the part of the "sufferer" to achieve victim status, which is commonly cherished by certain members of society for its ability to imbue the "sufferer" with increased power in the form of: (1) self-righteous indignation, (2) self-justified calls for extra "respect" or "sympathy", or some other sort of special treatment or benefit from society as a whole, or (3) unlimited excuses (from external sources) for lack of self-control, poor performance, or inability to adapt.

If you're running Apache, and it looks like you are, you can avoid logging that crap (and minimize bandwidth and CPU waste) with this minor httpd.conf change. You can also block/ban email spiders (at least ones that report their agent name truthfully, which apparently is most of them) using the info at the same link.
Take for example if someone changes tires on a big truck...going from the stock size up to 44" of rolling rubber. The speed reading recorded by the EDR will be grossly inaccurate in relation to the true speed, unless everything is recalibrated to reflect the modifications. How about engine modifications? If a stock turbocharger on a car is modified to run at 30-50% more boost, then the EDR will record that the car is operating out of normal paramaters.
Yeah, that's when your lawyer comes in handy. Newsflash: lots of useful things give misleading or even downright incorrect info -- for example: all media:). Seriously, human interpretation is always and over-riding factor in the case of automated reporting or monitoring: the security guard verifies what set off the motion detector, the pilot trusts his view of ground outside over a broken altimeter, etc.
As long as these factors are accounted for when the data from the EDR is being analyzed, then it's (somewhat) safe...but if just the numbers from the device are presented without their real-world correlation, that could cause some trouble IMHO.
Well, of course these factors would be considered. Otherwise your lawyer is not doing his or her job. This is no different than any other soft of evidence -- it's introduced by a side who thinks it will help them, then it is analyzed and dissected and peppered thoroughly with interpretation by judge and jury.

Where, exactly, are these 20k+ people without access to food or bathing supplies? I argue that the people you see who you believe don't have such access indeed do, by many different means (charity, welfare, getting up off one's ass and working), but choose not to access for various reasons (insanity, stupidity, laziness, or even just to perpetrate the ruse that helps them milk a few bucks from chumps like you). Just because someone is dirty and claims to be hungry doesn't mean they don't have access to food or bathing supplies.
er, both of your posts look the same to me, but thanks for trying:)
and now, to quickly annihilate your point: roads and internet aren't mutually exclusive. of course food and clothing (and bathing supplies, I guess, yeah, sure, why not) come first. but that doesn't mean we can't have both. who (in the U.S.) doesn't have food and (at least access to) bathing supplies (and wants them)?
I read every post and saw several pondering the why question, and like you every one did not mention the obvious answer:
The purpose (and fun part) is not to shock yourself, but to shock the person with whom you are competing. It's like gambling with pain -- it's a blast to see your friend get zapped, and it's a great motivator to do well if you'll be shocked when you don't, and that's suspense and fear and thrill and excitement, and that's what gaming is all about.
Remember how much scarier Doom was than Wolfenstein? The tech made the better graphics which made a better (more real) experience. People who don't like to be scared might ask "why would you play a scary game? being scared is uncomfortable!" (actual quote from such a person who I know).
It's extreme yes, but I think it would very fun (excepting the video game chosen, perhaps, but that's easily changed) assuming 2 controllers are available. It would also be cool to have a bigger range of shock-levels (with both controllers linked to the same control, of course), so players could agree beforehand on shock level (wager) for thier duel (gamble).
This could also force a more realistic blocking delay. If you arranged the electrodes so that not touching them would make you unable to control your character, you could defend (i.e., not get shocked) by letting go of the stick. You avoid a shock, but you can't move your man, and there's some delay before you can move competently again because you have to re-grip the stick. Very cool.
I think this is a great idea that could be fairly well-accepted if the available shock voltage range is wide enough. 20kV, even at only 0.002J, seems like a lot for minimum settings.
No, you can still skip commercials on current and future replayTVs, just not automagically (and, BTW, that automagic skipping, called commercial advance never deleted anything -- it skips ads in the display stream, but all skipped scenes are still always recorded, never deleted, and you can turn off CA to see them, if you like.)
It's important to note that these features (automagic commercial advance and internet show sharing) are not being removed from existing replayTV models (50xx and prior), rather they are just not being included in new ones. The other commercial-skipping feature, called 30-second advance will be included on new replayTV models. This lets you jump 30 seconds ahead instantly with one button, or n * 30 seconds ahead with 2 buttons (integer then skip). Tivo has a similar feature in hidden form, which is not enabled by default (but easy to do -- 6 keys I believe on every Tivo reboot), and is not quite as powerful (no integer multiples jump). Both machines, of course, have variable-speed fast-forward (up to really, really fast), and quick 5-7 second reverse-jump features.
So, I expect a rush on 5040's (the cheapest model with the least storage, which is the best deal since upgrading to more/larger drives is so easy) culminating in incredible eBay price-gouging when they become really scarce. I wonder if D&M will set a time-limit of some kind on activating old 50xx models to prevent this?
That's un-possible -- you just described Amazon.com, and if that preferences system were patentable, Amazon would have patented it a long time ago, right?! Right?!:)

Why do you say that? I mean, really, is society designed, or does it evolve? If you are the designer, why did you design something in a way that cou consider to be a shame? Even more basically: can something be designed around anything at all (survival, perhaps?), much less something so specific and intangible as relaxation and exploring ones own self?

If a stock turbocharger on a car is modified to run at 30-50% more boost, then the EDR will record that the car is operating out of normal paramaters.
:). Seriously, human interpretation is always and over-riding factor in the case of automated reporting or monitoring: the security guard verifies what set off the motion detector, the pilot trusts his view of ground outside over a broken altimeter, etc.
Yeah, that's when your lawyer comes in handy. Newsflash: lots of useful things give misleading or even downright incorrect info -- for example: all media
Nothing to see here, move along . . .
Grin and bare what, your ass? I don't think mooning management, smiling or not, will help here. :)
They cite competition from Safari as the reason for this decision.
:)
e xplorer.unix.
So what's their excuse for dropping IE for Solaris and HP-UX? Competition from HotJava? Hahaha -- that silly little "browser" has been EOL'd (end-of-life'd) by Sun. Or maybe it's the mighty Netscape 7, or Mozilla (both of which are a.k.a. "Solaris-crasher")? No, folks, the answer is . . . Opera! They are afraid of Opera. Or Lynx. One or the other.
Funny, in that IE UNIX link above, they left the original meta tags from the release in the page, so a search engine snippet might mislead someone into thinking IE Solaris and HP-UX were just released. Google shows: "Internet Explorer 5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Microsoft Outlook Express are now available on both Solaris and HP-UX.", but once you click through the full page says:

Gee, do NYC, Boston, Chicago, Miami, or San Francisco count?
Where, exactly, are these 20k+ people without access to food or bathing supplies? I argue that the people you see who you believe don't have such access indeed do, by many different means (charity, welfare, getting up off one's ass and working), but choose not to access for various reasons (insanity, stupidity, laziness, or even just to perpetrate the ruse that helps them milk a few bucks from chumps like you). Just because someone is dirty and claims to be hungry doesn't mean they don't have access to food or bathing supplies.
er, both of your posts look the same to me, but thanks for trying :)
and now, to quickly annihilate your point: roads and internet aren't mutually exclusive. of course food and clothing (and bathing supplies, I guess, yeah, sure, why not) come first. but that doesn't mean we can't have both. who (in the U.S.) doesn't have food and (at least access to) bathing supplies (and wants them)?
Won't someone think of the bathers/b>!!!!?!?!??
why anybody would want to do this I dunno..
Right?! :)
This thing on? Hello?
...I don't see this catching on as society isn't designed around relaxation and exploring ones own self.
Why do you say that? I mean, really, is society designed, or does it evolve? If it is indeed designed (by the illuminati, I assume), then can we (read: you) speak for the intent of the designer without in fact being the designer. If you are the designer, why did you design something in a way that cou consider to be a shame? Even more basically: can something be designed around anything at all (survival, perhaps?), much less something so specific and intangible as relaxation and exploring ones own self?
Methinks you are new age troll!
