I am part of the Linux community and I do hate the evil american corporations. I don't care if nobody gives a shit about me, I know what I stand for and I don't give a shit about nay-sayers like you.
In case you didn't notice, I was being a bit over dramatic... but my general point is still true. Linux and open-source are doing what they do because it fulfills a need and people like to do it. They didn't start the war. They have not declared war. But they are fighting one regardless, even if passively. Microsoft IS trying to destroy Linux. Do you not believe that??
And I'm not some kid living in my parents basement. I'm in my 30's and have a family.
I'm also optimistic about the future of Linux and open source.
The funny thing is, both Ubuntu and SUSE can be easily setup to run the "other" desktop (or ANY of the smaller ones). Why are so many people hung up on what is set as the default?
All distro's are the same when you strip them of their branding.
Microsoft has been trying hard to kill Linux using every underhanded tactic they can think of... but nothing has worked yet. Articles like this are ridiculous. When you're being hunted by the enemy, you don't all lump together! That way you become an easy target. You stay spread far apart and keep making small inroads. War of attrition. Eventually, with the continueing efforts of the open source community and never-ending new distro's, new battle methods, etc..., Microsoft will have to give up and die.
Calamari was the first thing I thought of when I read the title to. I find that it can have quite a rubbery texture which really grosses some people out. I don't mind it. The plump squishiness of shrimp and the rubbery tenderness of calamari... mmmm... i'm getting hungry.
oh it's there... it's not blue, it's not red, it has no pretty icons associated with... but it's there.

Pray that you don't ever see it... if you do, it usually means there is something seriously wrong... sometimes get-out-the-boot-cd-and-try-to-recover wrong, often system-is-pooched-you're-screwed wrong. But even then, it's not the end of the world. Just mount the drive using a Knoppix boot CD and copy your/home directory to another drive and start again.
as well as Linspire, Xandros, and Lycoris which are commercial. These distro's all qualify as very good desktop platforms.
I have been using Linux as my desktop exclusively since the year 2000. I can watch DVD's, listen to MP3's, burn CDs and DVDs, download and edit digital video from my MiniDV camcorder, download and edit pictures from my digital camera, print with my laser printer, scan with my scanner, manage files on my USB pen drive, play doom3, neverwinter nights, ut2004, etc... WHAT MORE ARE PEOPLE LOOKING FOR? With the exception of decent CAD software (which I don't need) and tax/accounting software, what am I missing that the Windows users have? I don't even feel the need to run wine/cedega/crossover crap.
Linux desktop has arrived years ago... it just keeps being refined.
My first thought when I want to make an old system a desktop machine is Debian with IceWM. The system you describe is much more than enough for this.
I used to run Debian on a P133 with 64M ram and IceWM as a window manager with no problems. That runs just like W95/W98.
...software. Something like this would never be implemented in an open source compiler. With open source, you know exactly what you get... with closed, you get what the owners want you to get, which will help their bottom line.
and they won't be sticking that long horn up my ass!
But being serious now, isn't there a huge community of people that will NOT run Microsoft products anymore, regardless of what kind of features/functionality/eye-candy cometh forth.
These people have switched to OS/X and/or Linux and are not looking back.
You missed the part about meta moderation. Given enough people who will visit a spam site because the spammers themselves rated it relevant, it will get modded down. If the spammer continue to rate the same site as relevant, then the public can meta-moderate those spammer account down. Then they will not have as much power to rate themselves. It would be a continual battle for the spammers, which would not be worth their time.
I always thought that Google should implement some kind of user rating system for it's search results. I mean, put "relevance" rating radio buttons (1 to 5) underneath the link, and allow "logged-in" google users to rank each link. Google users could then have the choice of seeing their search results filtered through "user ratings" or not. And because this system will obviously be abused, allow users to rate other users ratings, much like slashdot does with it's meta moderation. Would this not produce the highest quality google results over time?

Google, if you use this idea, you owe me big time. As payment, I take money orders and Paypal. Thanks!
I recently purchased a cheap DVR (Daytek P20) which works fine for recording directly onto blank DVD+R's. I think once these catch on and improve in quality and further go down in price, people will stop bothering with VCRs/VHS.

... the success called "United Linux"??

Darn old zoltrix modems got me all confused.
I'm talking about the original zoltron, the one with the five lion robots... not the stupid thing that came after.
I've yet to meet a USB digital camera which I couldn't easily mount under Linux.

If they can eventually bust or scare all the warez dealers, OS's like Linux will continue to grow in popularity. Thanks!

Get a Kinesis keyboard, they are damn expensive but keeps you from having to deal with dvorak.
Are there proper ATI drivers available for Linux yet? I will stay with nVidia until such time.

So much hatred. You need therapy. oh, and bush and blair suck.
Hmmm... all is fair in love and war?
Mini DVD seems to be the newest craze in camcorders and I kind of like the idea of not using tape.
