not sure if it's possible (and completely unsure on the use of teletext in the US), but here in europe most TV channels have teletext pages with the TV guide for that channel. This conveniently couples channel and guide (although you may need to program in the pagenum for each channel). Unfortunately, different teletext services will have a different layout, but you can cut down on the hardware (OCR and all that..)
>"We agree to broadcast this program, you agree to watch the commercials."
I dont remember any such agreement. Sure.. there is an agreement, but it's an agreement between the advertiser and the broadcaster.
advertiser: "WE give you cash if you show our crap on prime time"
broadcaster: "Ok, give us the cash, and we'll air it."
viewer: "I dont wanna watch this crap"
The viewer didnt agree to anything, and is not forced to view any commercials. The advertiser ofcourse hopes some people are too lazy to pick up the remote. That's fine. But it's not an agreement between viewer and advertiser or viewer and broafcaster.
The GPL does not specify a price, and does not require software to be gratis. It does allow distribution for a fee.. Ofcourse, it's probably not what you mean, since it allows re-distribution without a fee..
Depends on how much formatting is actually needed, and frankly I know shit about document formats. Formatting is only a means to an end (making the document better to read). So the real question is: is there a document format that allows enough formatting?
That may mean that some hyperdandy special effects cannot be used any more.
>In the light of the fact that governments tend to need to interact with other bodies, I would say they need to use what most other people are using. Which is MS Office.
Wrong. They need to use the format that most people can use, which is NOT MS Office, but a standard. it's the document format that counts, not the software. There are still people who prefer to use WP, StarOffice, etc or use a "non-ms-compliant" OS . Governments should not force people to use certain software, ESPECIALLY commercial software. Pick a format that can be read by WP, StarOffice, and Word.
>Personally, I don't like "open" licenses which have such strict stipulations. It is similar to having an open bar with a sign saying "No Irish allowed." If we limit who can join the party, it is not exactly open nor free nor "Free".
I see it slightly different: Everyone is allowed to come to the party, but everyone needs to bring a bottle of liquor. You wanna come to the party, but don't want to bring a bottle? tough.
I do agree it's a restriction on freedom.. one which I happen to like. But the BSD licence is more "free". Choose your licence according to your own taste. Each has its own pros and cons.
indeed, icewind dale was highly linear, and storywise wasn't much. then again, icewind dale was intended to be a dungeoncrawl, with a little story added so it makes some sense. In that respect, I think they succeeded. Just don't think Icewind dale is a good RPG.. it isn't, and wasn't meant to be.
Arcanum is pretty cool, and in quests does have a little more to offer than baldur's gate, IMO.. (yes, I've played both). The mix of technology and magic is pretty good, but the game does have a bit more power-balance problems than BG. But I guess using a premade gamesystem that's been in use for more than 10 years makes balance easier between characters.
well.. I wouldn't call'em exactly incompetent, or stupid... But let's face it, Al'qaeda isn't exactly going for high-tech solutions. No matter what you may think, the idea of crashing a couple of big fucking planes loaded with fuel on a large building isn't very sophisticated.
>Oh yeah, and it wouldn't destory something the size of Africa, maybe something more like England, France, Spain, Portugal and Germany (and all those in between) put together though.
which is about the size of Soutch Africa.. or more..
>Maybe you should read the article, buddy.
If you're gonna nitpick, do it right and heed your own advise..
the judge has ordered BUMA/STEMRA (dutch equivalent to RIAA) to resume the talks that were broken off because of the RIAA lawsuit. Looks like they'll get a licence for streaming only at the moment, but while talks are ongoing, Kazaa does not have to close.
for comparison, you'd also need the same numbers for Office.. I have KOffice, but use it only very very rarely... just like I only typed 1 or 2 letters in Word. Also computers often come bundled with WinXP and Office. How many of those users actually use it?
My guess is that daily usage/download will actually be lower than 10%
Actually, patents do not stop home manufacture of (e.g.) drugs. However, you cannot exploit it, commercially or otherwise.

Yes. But they're allowed to SPEAK about what they want. That's not hypocritical, that's the difference between speech and action.
