Medial equipment, avionics, there's plenty of stuff that is specifically made for situations where failure is not an option. Consumer software is not such a thing.
1. WP for windows was not superior to anything when it first came out. I don't reacll Word for DOS being very popular. I non-humbly submit that WP shot themselves in the foot on the windows migration.
2. Word was never bundled with windows (by MS at least).
3. Some places still insist on using WP (legal departments, for some reason).
The current version is just too unstable to trust on a cellphone. The "Cobalt" version is suppsoedly ready, but Palmone wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Even palmsource gave up on it and decided to go to a linux core, all that should give you an idea of how bad the codebase had become. (espically since palm usually has no reservations in putting out badly flawed products and patching later)
As much as I like my standalone palm, I could not deal with my cell phone crashing daily. If WM is more stable than POS (which shouldn't be too hard), then this may be a good move for treo.
I wouldn't be surprised that new graduates have inflated expectations. They've been indoctrinated in the false notion that CS is a lucrative carrer path.
On another note, you hire "entry level" graduates? I thought you're type was extinct! (at least in the US)
And how would you suggest he get a job with his "trade school" education? Regardless of what a University is supposed to be for, in the actual real world, employers expect people to have a 4-year degree and a laundry list of specalities right out of the gate.
The problem with what you are saying is, 99% of employers looking for programmers don't subscribe to that outlook on what CS is for.
In the real world, a CS degree is the minimum to get into anything but a bottom rung programming job. And there are no bottom-rung programming jobs to be had anymore (those all got outsourced), so that's not an option.
Or we'll see a cage match between Gates and Carmack. (of ID software, who uses OGL for thier games) My money's on Carmack and the other game developers.
Perhaps, but there are other ways of going about this. If someone does have a history that emergency personnell need to know about, they could wear a chip or a medic-alert style breaclet like people alreay do. (all the verichips do is provide a uniqiue id code anyway, the real magic's in the database)
Not everyone has some condition that warrants tagging them internally, those that do can be offered the option of wearing or carring one.
Meh. None of the shops at my college town have wifi (execpt the chains). It doesn't hurt because there is so little wifi around there anyway that nobody expects it. People still bring laptops. I used to bring my own internet back in the palm.net days. The old Viix with it's antenna sticking up and the folding keybaord got some odd looks.
He doesn't "know" 100%, but the odds are in his favor.
Bah, at any rate, coffeshops where I'm from have done just fine without wi-fi period. The schools are pretty well covered, and the dorms all have ethernet. Based on my observations, a small precentage of patrons in my particular college town are studying/laptoping as opposed to just hanging out.
You don't understand the reason why people start a business. (like a coffee shop) They want to be able to make a living doing what they love. That pretty much requires making ends meet. You don't have to be setting the woods on fire, but you do have to make enough profit to pay the bills and put food on the table.
If they can find a way to do free internet and still keep going that's great, but they aren't there solely so you don't have to pony up for some inetrnets.
1. Last time I had a disconnected phone (not recently), there was no dialtone.
2. Newer GSM phones don't work at all without a SIM, (I acutally don't know if they would with an invaild one.)
Conflict and war are the natural state of humanity. Nobody has to be taught to hit or hit back or to hate. People do have to be taught how not to do those things, and that obviously does not work well.
Worst. Phone. Evar.

Go ahead and try. We'll see how far you get against a roomfull of the banks lawyers.

The cost of what I'm using (Cingular) is decent, 20/month for unlimited, but the speed is almost comprable 28.8k modems.

To punish him. To make him hurt as possible within the bounds of law.
Nice one.
MS would be smart to make a EU specfic version again, if only to keep out of the courts.

Thing is, this could be put in a card or a brecelet and be only minimally less effective, with fewer bad implications.
Simple, they're not one iota different, except for the model number.
(remember that the cost of broadband for commercial use is at least double the consumer rate)

A university is a very different place than a corporation. Ask anyone who has worked for both.
...which is: A type of emulator!!! Wheee!!!
