Most "normal people" (i.e. Linux and OSX users) use a GUI built into the OS which does all of the nice driver location, installation and configuration. I rarely use 631 (in fact, just checked my Mac and was surprised to find 631 is disabled by default... never used it). CUPS works really well on Linux and Mac. (Except for many Canon printers since Canon is just a terrible company... don't buy Canon printers).
The purpose of the corporation is to attract capital (stock) to increase the size of the business. It also limits the liability of the owners (stockholders). Neither of these things would lead to better quality. In fact, both could lead to poor quality (increased production and lack of accountability).
Bill Gates is generous with his wealth. He finally figured out that he cannot possibly spend it all on himself so established the "Gates" foundation to give it away. I would argue that realizing the inevitable and going for maximum publicity for yourself is not humble by any definition.
Ever seen a "cooling tower" (common for nuclear plants and coal plants)? Water disappears into thin air, not into the ground. That's the problem that TFA was discussing.
Nuclear, wind and solar don't generate greenhouse gasses during operation. (They all generate some greenhouse gasses during construction.) Nuclear uses lots of water to cool the plant. Wind and solar photovoltaic don't use water during operation.
Watch Gasland II. All wells will eventually leak into surface water. About 5% failure rate per year. (The cement around the pipe develops cracks.) They studied one well which didn't leak in the first year. Gasland II shows what happens when they do eventually leak.
I know it's a drag, but if you actually take the time to read the Kickstarter page, you will see that they have worked out the math. Furthermore, these are actual rocket scientists so they should be better than the average slashdotter.
My "yuck" factor was raised not so much by the blood and gore of slaughter (which I realize is part of the process) but by the practices of factory farms which include inhumane overcrowding, diseased animals (and antibiotics to treat them), antibiotic resistant bacterial contamination, unsanitary processing, mixing meats from animals of dubious origin and health together (most hamburger is a melange of meat from different countries with little knowledge of its provenance) and long time storage and shipping. I realize that if you raise your own animals and have control over their feed and health, you don't have many of these problems. However, we are still left with the growing mountain of evidence that animal fat is bad for you (primarily cancer and cardiovascular disease).
I have started to think about the "yuck" factor also in regard to all animals. When you look at how cows, pigs, chickens, etc. are raised, fed and "processed" by food factories... and look at the blood and gore and what goes into what you end up eating... it's pretty disgusting. I've mostly become a vegan (with some fish). Also, animal fat (even from organic, free range, etc. animals) is just really bad for you... heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, etc.
I've always thought it was a bad idea to build the computer into the screen. The problem is that when the computer becomes outdated, you have to dump a perfectly good screen. I have LCD screens that I've used for many years with different computers as I upgrade the hardware.
Hi Jane, I think you need to do a little remedial reading on the definition of OS and apps. In brief and without getting too nit picky technical, the OS interfaces with hardware and provides services to apps. Byzantium is a set of applications which run on an OS (Linux). Byzantium is not an OS, Linux is an OS. You could port the Byzantium set of apps to another OS.
It is an app and runs on x86 and RaspberryPi. If you have a WiFi device (smartphone, etc.) you just connect to the app. If you'd like your smartphone to run the app, you could help port it.
Let's see... these networks run over WiFi frequencies. You could jam all WiFi frequencies but that would be: a) non-trivial b) obvious c) self defeating d) all of the above
You're lucky that they responded appropriately by calling you and fixing the problem. The usual response is to accuse you of being a terrorist/hacker/anarchist/etc. and try to put you in jail.
So, this is news? There are still lots of greedy bastards looking to make a quick buck. Some of them are smart... smart enough to make a quick buck but maybe not smart enough to see the real potential of applying their efforts to something worthwhile. I think this has always been the case... sad but true.
"Now we just need to punish the people who valuated Facebook so high."
I just don't understand this logic. In retrospect, Facebook was priced "high" but still had lots of greedy people clamoring to buy it at that price. Who should we punish? - The greedy people who thought they would make a killing by flipping the stock? or - The greedy people at Facebook who priced the IPO to maximize revenue?
Nobody forced anyone to buy the stock. Nobody committed fraud by hiding material facts. This is just a clusterfuck of greedy people. NASDAQ did screw up and made it harder for the greedy buyers to get in or get out and make profits. NASDAQ should pay for these screwups... and $10 million is peanuts. I will enjoy watching all of these greedy people fight over money.
Sales taxes are the only taxes which are related to the stuff you buy from corporations. The rest are paid for by everyone whether or not they buy corporate stuff. I don't want to underwrite corporations so they can make stuff for you to buy. They should pay their own way and you should pay for the cost of the stuff you buy. Don't ask me to pay for your stuff.

Pollution dilution... it's been around for a long time... still not a solution.

That's a one time cost.
The subsidies are given every year.
I believe that they have a linear arithmetic increasing number, not exponential.

I think that's already been done:

a) non-trivial
b) obvious

d) all of the above
Best to use all open source software.
Open source is unlikely to have a back door. If one is there, it will be quickly found and patched.
Looks like these people are working on something similar:
