On that note, I had my best BF3 session this evening yet - all 4 guys in the squad completely supported each other, not 2, not 3 - the full damn squad for a change and it worked out exceptionally well, we dominated, supported each other, had significantly more fun. Great stuff.

Infact having finished Mass Effect recently, considering it's universe hasn't been tainted with edits and prequels, I'd go as far as to say, the lore / universe is superior to Star Wars.

Just fucking great - try it if you haven't.

  5. The inevitable comparison, so let's get it over wi on Modern Warfare 3 Released · · Score: 4, Interesting

I don't know if Battlefield 3 got itself a post at /. but I thought I might chime in here.
Both of these games aren't what the older (I'd assume slashdot?) crowd are looking for when it comes to single player, there's vastly better experiences to be had with far better told engrossing stories. (Mass Effect for example is perfect for Star Wars and Star Trek nerds, myself included - I didn't realise just how good this was until re-playing it this year, it's REALLY damned good)

Now, as for multiplayer - if we even have time (not many of us I'd expect) Modern Warfare is generally targeted more at the console crowd, it focuses on "lone wolf" style gameplay where one guy can dominate and well you're likely to be called all kinds of names playing it, beggining with "F" or "N"
BF3 however is team and squad focused and a real joy to play even if you don't hit the top of the ladder, infact I'd say satisfying is the word. You might also be called "N" or "F" but generally the crowd is at least a little bit older and the teamplay is very rewarding, it promotes it.

Both are timesink games. I'm not traditionally one for playing MP games at all, however I caved in on BF3 for the social aspect with friends and I must say, I'm very very impressed. Really quite a good game online. 64 players on a decent PC is an absoloute site to behold, it really is.
Note: I make this recommendation as a 33 y/o gamer who doesn't have the time he used to, so it's surprising I'm even fitting in time for the game at all - really good stuff.

Anecdotal comment: Out of the 50 staff I work with in my team in the office, we have had the following phone purchases in the past 12 months

    1x iphone 4
    5x galaxy S2
    1x galaxy 1 series
    3x HTC Android phones
2x Acer Android phones (surprisingly good, Liquid Metal phone - 120$ AUD outright!)
    1xAsus Transformer
    0xipads

Also of note, 2 of those Android purchases were directly moving FROM iphones to Android. If I increase that threshold to 18 months*, I can add another iphone 4.
The sentiment in the office and amongst all the nerds I know except 2 die hards is that "Apple is evil" and generally to be avoided. It's basically 'not cool' to own an iphone at the moment, at least with the people I speak with. (If you can't tell, I'm one of the converts)

I have in the past 12 months though, recommended an iphone for someone surprisingly. A girl who had an iphone 3gs she dropped it and shattered it, she's not tech savvy and already has an iphone with itunes backup, it would be silly to push my 'Android agenda' on the girl when clearly an iphone would suit here.
Flame comment begin: and to be genuinely honest, I see the iphone as the 'dumbest' of the smartphones, it's perfect for people like her because it's like the old Nokia 6110 of smartphones, simple and basic. You can't do much but you can't break much either. (Yes I genuinely believe that and I owned 3 of the things)

    * and the guy who got his iphone 18 months ago is envious of everyones Galaxy S2, he's switching to Android at the end of his 24 month contract.

Simple logic dictates we must be sensible about this. Infact DECENT logic actually implies we should abso-damn-loutely be self sufficient, capable of living indefinitely, assuming the sun doesn't die out (soon) - however it will (eventually)

A huge amount of these "security professionals" insist on trashing perfectly good hardware for no apparent reason, it's a complete was of good resources.
The amount of perfectly good disks I've seen killed is astounding and not always old clunkers either, some relatively decent sized, high performing disks to boot.

DBAN doesn't take forever either, hook them up to a spare PC and fire it off, change the disks every couple of hours, infact if I recall DBAN supports multiple drives at the same time.
Sure if you have a 40gb IDE or something, just drill a hole in it - but if you're trashing anything over 160gb you're starting to ruin perfectly good hardware, for the sake of being pedantic and frankly stupid - stop and just don't do it.
This goes for anyone else suggesting the same thing, go and do some reading before believing any of this "must be 12pass write" rubbish to a disk.

No toys, no conventions, no cosplay but I always enjoyed the movies, until of course the prequels sullied my memories and the new edits tarnished the old ones.

I heard many many people recommending the Plinkett reviews of Star Wars Episode 1->3 and hyping them as amazing. However I'm one of those guys who generally ignores or disagrees with too much hype so I'd never watched them. I was wrong. They are completely enteraining, intelligent, insightful, weird (just wait!) and also genuinely sad at points as his editing and choice of music really makes you look back nostalgically at your childhood when Star Wars was still innocent, unbutchered fun.

Anyhow, you have to watch Plinketts reviews of all 3 new movies and NEVER watch the new movies again, or Plinketts review for that matter.
I went from 7 years of having given up on Star Wars to finally pining to watch them again, untarnished. For lack of a better analogy, I felt like I'd forgiven an ex after a bitter breakup, it was quite relieving.

Then,........... I obtained "Harmys" release of Star Wars, it's a 720p version of the original with the majority of the bad stuff ripped out. A few sections are touched up but they are genuinely not bad ones. - Google for Harmy Star Wars - 8gb, worth it completely.
Initially while watching it, as someone who gets invested in the universe of a series, I found myself thinking 'back' to the new movies at points, pondering who did what or why. I fortunately forced myself to stop doing that after about 30 minutes and just enjoyed the movie. (Han Shot first!)

As long as I make a point of NEVER watching EP 1/2/3 again, nor Plinketts reviews, the bad stuff will slowly fall out of my memory, leaving only the original.

I really, really recommend Harmys release of Star Wars, the audio and video for 99% of the movie is amazingly good.
