What are the capabilities of this silk? How is it superior to regular silk? I see no real facts just that it's made of spider silk and took a while? It would take me a while to fasion a life size bridge out of Lego - it doesn't mean it would be stronger than a real bridge.
They brought it ENTIRELY on themselves. They abandoned the hardcore gamer entirely, they focused on the casual (read: niche) gamer. Your average hipster, fad following person snapped one up for that "zany wii sports! lol" -and guess what the attach rate was? ABYSMAL - a huge portion of Wiis are seen as literally "The Wii sport box" - it's pulled out at christmas as a replacement for monopoly.
They re-hashed all their old games (as usual) and the focus on the hardcore or real games by third parties was abysmal. Now they are high and dry, Android, iOS, Steam indie, X360 Arcade and PSN (plus PS Move and Kinect?) the Wii has utterly no market anymore, you can get your casual games anywhere.
Personally? I owned a Wii briefly, it gathered dust and I have no interest in them, sorry but in my case at least, Nintendo won't be missed.
I've never told anyone this before, because it's horrifically tragically sad but I had a picture of Peter Norton torn out of a magazine pinned up near my PC when I was a kid 20 years ago. Yeah I was a complete nerd / geek, especially for performance and hardware. Back then Norton utilities 6 was the absoloute bees knees, speedisk for DOS is still the most thorough defragger I know of, full with file reorder was the option, it ensured 0 files were fragmented and this was in the days that exceedingly few files on the disk were set as read only / system. It genuinely improved performance significantly.
Their tools were good for maybe 3 or 4 years more, possibly the first one or two Windows tools for 95 had some useful features lacking in the core OS but after that, what a shambles. To me, any machine with Norton utilities (Norton utilities NOT "Nortons utilities" while I'm at it) should pretty much be wiped clean:/
I apologise for not modding you up to +5 where you belong, why you're at -1 is beyond me. I blew my points on this guy replying to you http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2605870&cid=38600372 who has a point but this is my own fault for not surfing at -1
Someone please mod this guy up, because he's right on the fucking money. (3.6 user here also, I have no idea where to go from here, I think chrome is ugly as fuck, newer version of FF are a joke and I'm not going to IE,... I'm kind of stuck)
(Edit, yes I know my points go to waste but someone NEEDS to mod you up)
The players I mean, not Crytek / EA! I paid legitimately for the game! Expecting to get a sequel to the partially open world game Crysis 1, which was really bloody good. A great compromise between on rails standard action FPS and open world game.
Sadly when I got Crysis 2, I got a game which had gone backwards with terrible, awful mouse input code, graphics which were about the same, mediocre pacing and gameplay, buggy abilities nano suit wheel and a story which made me wish they'd just gone 'lite' on the story like the first one. Biggest dissapointment in such a long long time. Frankly, fuck Crysis 2. As for the pirates, my condolences on your wasted bandwidth.
I reccommend people go pick up Crysis 1, sure the last 1/3 is weaker than the first 2/3 but it opens damn strong and in max detail it has some amazing art design and graphics still.
It's one of the few google services I have no interest in, thus far their policies have been absoloutely certain to keep me away from the product. I'm quite surprised they continue to be this stupid.
Vote you up or post, I say post. Agreed. - Those people are frankly, idiots. Their direction in the past 12 months has been an utter joke. Firefox is slowly becoming a mess. I continue to perservere with the 3.6 build (still updated for security, just last week infact) - however I'm not sure how long I can endure this performance.
This is barely one step above the pretentious douchery of a LMGTFY link. If you can't be fucked writing a simple explanation of why it's a positive thing then don't bother.
Bad news for us who have no idea what this means or implies. What could this do if this thing were real? I haven't seen a laymen explanation. We're not all smart guys you know.
It already exists, you mask the sound of your shit taking / shit splashing and shit wiping with a sound which is equal to or worse than said sounds. All you need to do is play some audio out of your phone, I believe the stuff is called "dubstep" although I've had sources tell me it's called "derpstep" as well.
Yep, I keep getting mocked for using 3.6. Fact is, they keep patching the security - it's at 3.6.24 - it was like 3.6.11 when they first released 4.0 It's slow, no question - but ALL my addons work AND it's not ugly, it works precisely how I want from a user interface perspective.
I will change, no doubt - but it's unlikely I'll go to another version of FF.
Was it really that long ago? Damn I'm getting old - Ithought it might be 8 or 9 years. I need at least 2 years, I'd prefer 3. 5 is far too high for moving parts, I'm surprised anyone ever offered it. (Good for us though)
I own a German ADSL modem from a company called AVM, the Fritzbox 7390. (Don't buy one) for some reason, intermittantly it's not logging correctly into the DynDNS account all the time. I have had to re-activate my account at least twice now with DynDNS due to lack of activity. (even though I use the actual domain name daily)
I'm not sure if they want me to log in via the web instead, or the modem is going screwy, or what but it's concerning me as I too, like a few others here have had these names for a heck of a long time. FWIW My billion based ADSL modem offsite has also possibly had the same expiration problem in the last 12 months too (I can't quite recall) - definitely a concern.
It looks fine, stop being pedantic. Also, the only problem is there's TOO MUCH light. A proper LAN party it should be dark in there, sheets over the windows that kind of thing, so the mole men gamers can truly come out and play. (like me)

Holy......... what a mess, or rather - what a ridiculously over-clean, sparse user interface. Minimalism for the sake of minimalism. No lines to define where one item begins and another ends, worse shading and use of colours to identify rows / columns / boxes / sections. The entire thing is designed by committee. The old one feels like it was designed by technical people with design skills. Now it feels it's designed by designers with technical lackeys to perform the work.
The entire thing is more difficult to use and slows people down, a complete step backwards. Sorry for the language here but this picture I've made was designed for another forum. Including the file name. http://chattypics.com/files/newcalendarisfucked_4ynyf5yix1.jpg I've outlined why the original one is better, it's designed logically and well themed, the colours match with gradients of light / dark depending on heading / menu / etc - there's simple, clean lines seperating items (which should be damned well seperated) Etc
User interfaces seem to be generally getting worse and worse, it's quite unfortunate.
Ok well, you're not actually missing out,... BUT there is better television than ever out there right now and it's worth checking out. Don't get me wrong, I love being all unique and internet awesome telling people "What's television" - I don't watch any free to air TV here in Australia at all, it's utter trash.
However thanks to the internet, I do watch some great shows, some old, some new. - I mean let's take a look here. Breaking Bad - amazing television, really, really good TV show, funny, intelligent, thrilling and screwed up. Arrested Development, ok yes it's old now but that is some incredibly clever writing, awesome humour and just an amazing show. South Park, always on topic, very few lemon episodes, not just for kids or deranged people, often has a genuine message or makes a mockery of things others are too scared to Mythbusters, this is slashdot, I shouldn't even have to explain The Wire, also an old show but an incredibly good show, really, really good. Venture Bros, it's crazy, it's different, it's a bit retarded but it's great fun Curb your Enthusiasm, just brilliant. Dexter, beggining to weaken I hear but seasons 1-5 are pretty damn good TV. What self respecting/. poster can't empathise with a guy who can't fit in and doesn't understand many "social norms" ! Futurama, ok the return is weaker than the original but hell it's still worth it Louie, great comedy / strange drama by Louis CK
So yes, it is cool to not like television. I mean I don't watch sport, I read more American news than Australian - I don't "watch" TV at all but I do consume quite a few TV shows which come from television.
New 'Rubber Robot' Crawls Through Small Spaces With Inflatable Limbs
Say that sentence out loud to 5 different people on the street, be sure to 'emphasize' the relevant section. This is the best heading on slashdot in years. I must admit when I'm feeling a bit adventurous I don't mind a bit of the old 'rubber robot' you know what I'm saying?
As an IT nerd, I've used my fair share of 802.11g and 802.11n networks. 802.11g I have never, ever seen more than 3.0MBytes/s sustained transfer rate about 24mbits. 802.11n I've delt with mostly 300mbit equipment, the highest sustained and consistent speed I've seen is 10MBytes/s across a large transfer, the average I would say is 5 or 6 but I have seen a sustained 10 multiple times. NEVER faster, ever! That's 80mbits per second.
On a 100mbit network, I've never seen a sustained speed of over 10 to 11MBytes/s, not the 12.5 it's theoretically capable of - so as nerds we all know about overhead. Wireless obviously is higher than wired.
That being said, it seems to me that the speed quotes are often a load of cobblers. 30gbit/s I'd be surprised if in the real world you saw more than 2 or 300MB/ytes per second sustained (if the disk is even capable)!
Like most of the rest of us, you have to understand at the core level what you're going to be delivering and to whom one day. Learn what users are actually like and live the hell we all have at one point or another.
and I still switched to Android partially because of the availablility of 4.3" screens, they are SO much better.
Yes yes I know pixel resolution blah, however they are still quite competent screens. Infact I'll go as far as to say, the reason people think the iphone 4 screen is so good (it is) is heightened due to the 3G and 3GS being so bad. No seriously, plug the specs in to a calculator, the 3G/S screen is AWFUL.
I have 800x480 on my 4.3" screen and yes the iphone looks better at fine stuff but mine still looks fantastic and it's big, nice and big. If I was a public transport user, this is actually an acceptable size to catch simpsons or southpark etc on in the morning on my phone.
While I'm at it,........ the iphone has only ONE button, all the other buttons MUST be drawn on the damn screen. Options, back, etc - all on the main screen. You might be used to it but I've trained myself off it now, I think the one button philosophy is an utter joke. 4 buttons is not unmanagable in the slightest. This frees up even MORE real estate - and it's consistent (hello apple!) because I can find my options (menu) button in the same location/EVERY/ time.
Best technical decision I've made in years. Iphone 3 -> 3GS -> 4 -> 4.3" Android phone, never, ever going back. â(TM)¥
