I think you're getting "gamers" and "tinkerers" confused. Sure there is some overlap but they are not the same beast.

As a gamer (ex-tinkerer) I care about what games I can play (the only reason I still have a PC): I don't give a flying fuck about how fast the machine is and whether or not it can have it's bits replaced at a moments notice.

And cost isn't an issue either: I have a DP G5 and a Powerbook for real computing (ie development).

That's simply not true. I run Doom 3 and WH40K: Dawn of War, two of latest, graphics intensive games, and both run perfectly on my Athlon 1800XP with a 9800Pro video card. The Athlon was well behind the leading edge even when I bought it 2 years ago, and the 9800pro was leading edge last year but certainly isn't now.

You misread the story. He said "great" game. In that regard I think it's considerably better than 2 to 1, pretty much every great PC game gets ported (in some cases, eg all of Blizzard's games we get the native the same time as they come out on the PC). Pretty much every other great PC game gets ported some time (usually upto a year later).

Don't be silly. There's a lot of games that are great on a real computer but suck on a console eg most RPGs, most strategy games, most first person shooters in fact everything except platform games and fighting games.

There are two games currently I would like to see on the Mac: Rise of Nations (which is on it's way) and Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War which is a surprisingly excellent RTS (surprisingly because I find Warhammer miniatures a real turn off).

They did *exactly* the same thing with EQ; and I bet they do exactly the same thing with EQ2.
Everquest 2 is a very good game, imho. I never played Everquest but I know that I like and enjoy EQ2 a lot.

I thoroughly enjoyed EQ when I first started playing. I played it for 2 years. And during that time it got worse and worse and worse. Two reasons: First they pander to the high levels at the expensive of the low level players. Two they consistently release bugged content and then spend forever "fixing" it which inevitably introduces new issues. Oh actually there was a 3rd reason: Verant's astonishing arrogance. They really meant it when they said "You're in Our World Now". And you'd better behave!

Bet the same thing happens with EQ2.

The government actually cares very little about what OS is used. At most a couple of mid-grade civil servants might care but usually it's down to the suppliers.

Here's a random mix of technologies I've used whilst working on big government projects:: NT, Solaris, (mumble, mumble boxes I can't talk about but definately do not run anything from MS) and we used: log4j, struts (ok so that's a mistake), eclipse, Apache (web server and xml signature library) in development.

Sure if you had to edit some XML file it would never happen but Apple doesn't make you do that. It stores meta-data without you even noticing: meta-information from cameras is transparently copied over and used, other meta-data is attached just by dragging a photo to a folder.

The same is true of album art, drag and drop and it's there.

Not everything (fails to) work like Windows: that's why those of us who value our time pay a little extra to buy a properly designed system rather than some cobbled together crap from Dell and Windows.

If you know your customers are going to behave "unreasonably" ie, you know, actually *use* the computer, browse web pages, click stuff, then the OS should protect them guide them etc. So why is it that Windows installs a huge sign saying "COME FUCK WITH ME I'M OWNED BY SOME TWAT WHO CHOSE TO USE WINDOWS"?

The fact that OSX can and does do so much better proves that it's Windows fault. Or are you trying to say that Windows users are a self selecting bunch of morons? For those that *choose* Windows I'd agree, but most people don't get to choose: they either don't realise there's a choice or they have Windows forced on them.
