I had a terrible time (a complete day, about 20 hours) when getting my shiny new ISDN card and Windows to cooperate. I'm not too sure about that. Linux distros aren't nearly as flexible as they need to be. When you take a Linux harddrive from one system to another, you almost always need to manually work-out one problem or another.

Erm... maybe. But Windows wouldn't even boot when you take the HDD to a different computer. Ever tried to change chipset (motherboard) drivers on a Windows installation? Forget it.

And let us not forget that WinXP has arrived. That makes a call to M$ because all of the hardware has changed. Stupid activation mechanisms...

  21. Re:Is it Linux or GNU/Linux? on Torvalds And Cox Write EU Parliament On Patents · · Score: 1

Both, to a certain degree. Linus created the Linux kernel, which is a project of its own. But a mere kernel doesn't make an operating system.

You need a whole lot of utility programs which provide a friendly interface to the users. For example, the shell and fileutils falls in that category. Most of these tools have GNU versions nowadays, that's why the GNU people call the whole operating system GNU/Linux.

But wait -- not everything you install with a common Linux distro is GPL-licensed. There's also BSD software, Perl and so on... it's a really complicated mix. We should really call this distribution a GNU/BSD/Perl/.../.../Linux one. Which if of course a very inconvenient handle. The community has mostly agreed on using "Linux" as a term which also describes the whole system, not just the kernel.

What's the point of this post? Linux gamers are complaining that Valve focuses on DX9 and you're explaining to us why DX9 won't work properly on Linux. So what? We knew that already. UT2003 proves that a modern game using OpenGL and running on Linux is totally feasable. HL2 has a few new effects, but the principle is the same... Next point: What are you talking about when you mention licensing agreements with InstallShield? Heck, common Linux distros don't even HAVE a registry. The Loki installer seems to do the job just fine for other game developers. Why is that beyond Valve? I'm even more clueless what iTunes or DRM should have to do with HL2. I mean REALLY clueless. BTW: Both are equally possible on Linux. It's just that nobody cares, because Linux users are thought to be too clever (or evil) to be stopped by boobytraps like DRM. Well, the community is changing... More and more Linux users don't know C, can't fix a makefile and won't break DRM mechanisms in their free time.
