So MS is giving away software. I really don't understand how it is wrong or harmful for anyone, monopoly or otherwise, to give away something. If a drug dealer went around giving away free samples, clearly stating that the drug was addictive and that future doses would not be free, would there be any problem with that? I personally think not - that would be fine with me. What MS is doing is giving these people a choice - in fact, if they wanted, the charities could throw away the donated software, or stash them in the back room unused. No one is FORCING them to use the donated software, and they know perfectly well the consequences (need for upgrades, bugs, patches) of using it.

The question is though, how does one become a software engineer. I have never heard of here being such a degree or feild. Just programmers calling themselves software engineers.

Actually, there are Software Engineering degrees emerging at many universities. For example, the University of Waterloo has a Bachelor of Software Engineering degree, offered jointly by the Department of Mathematics (which Computer Science is part of) and the Faculty of Engineering. The degree is accredited and leads to the Professional Engineer title and license. There are also many Software Engineering specializations or options that have been developed as part of Computer Science or Computer Engineering degrees, which provide students with a comprehensive understanding of software engineering techniques and practices.

I can reduce startup time by keeping it in memory using the quick startup feature, but it is just not as responsive and snappy as IE (The mouse freezes momentarily when switching tabs sometimes, the back button loads pages slower, menus are ever so slightly slower). So, I've tried to go back to IE w/ a 3rd party popup blocker, but guess what? I can't. After using Mozilla for a few months, I just can't go back to IE. I miss the tabs and other features, and I just like the look and feel of Mozilla more. So, now I'm using Phoenix, which solves the startup time problem, but it is still as unsnappy as IE.
