Also, if they kick the ball with enough force, the goal keeper will leave the goal in his own interest (I think even severe injury from being hit by a ball doesn't count as foul).

  5. Re:So How Long Is A Day, Anyway? on NASA Details Earthquake Effects on the Earth · · Score: 1

The latter. To start with, the day is the time from one midnight to the next. Midnight is when the sun is at the opposite side of the earth than you are. Therefore the length of the day is affected by two movements: First, the rotation of the earth around its axis (which makes that the stars seem to circulate around the earth), and second, the rotation around the sun (which makes that the sun seems to move relative to the stars). Now the rotation around the sun is going on an orbit which is almost, but not exactly circular. When the earth is a bit closer to the sun, it's moving a bit faster. Therefore the length of the "solar day" (is that the correct English term?) depends on the day of year. But even the rotation of the earth itself is not the same over the year. Due to plants (esp. trees) getting leaves in spring and those leaves falling down in winter, the summer rotation is slower than the winter rotation.

If you look at longer times, there are even more effects. The earth orbit's excentricity is not constant, but changes due to the gravity of the other planets. Also, the earth rotation is slowed down by the moon's gravity (tidal friction).

  6. Re:I wonder... on NASA Details Earthquake Effects on the Earth · · Score: 4, Informative

It is very common. For example, the duration of the day in summer is longer than in winter (no, I'm not speaking of the length of the light period, but of the rotation period of the earth). The reason is that the trees move mass upward in spring (they get leaves) and downwards in autumn (the leaves fall back down), which changes the moment of inertia of the earth. Since trees only grow on land areas, and most land areas are on the Northern hemisphere, this gives a net effect of slower earth rotation in (Northern) summer.

It's neither. IBM is doing this in it's own interest for sure. They never claimed that it's against their own interest, did they? After all, that's the idea behind capitalism: People doing good things for purely selfish reasons. So here we have an example where capitalism works exactly as intended!

And no, it doesn't rob money from MS, Sun and Oracle. Robbing is an act of taking someones possessions away with the help of weapons. Now this move will likely reduce the income of those companies, but that's not robbing (otherwise it would be robbing as well if I decide not to go shopping today because that reduces the income of the shops I would have bought something in).

Yes, there are many popular games running on this site.

To begin with, there's the "First Post" game. Wait for new stories, and try to get a first post. Especially ACs like to play this game.

Next, there's the Karma Whoring game. Try to get cheap Karma through postings which almost predictably get modded up without taking too much effort from your side (a good way is using Google to find some relevant link, and post that).

And of course, there is the "Obligatory" game: Find some way to integrate a standard phrase (like "In Soviet Russia, Slashdot plays YOU.") into the discussion as seamless as possible.

A variation which works only on polls is the "Missing Option" game: Can you find any option "missing" from a poll? Of course there are various levels: Adding a missing option to "Favourite drink" is easy. Adding a missing option to a yes-no question is harder, especially if it shall be a funny one.

    Any game I forgot?
