  1. Re:Time for Doctors to embrace the techology on Interesting Enemies For a Diagnostic Database · · Score: 1

By regulated I mean the controls need to be put on access to this information until it is "fool proof" so their is a 100% correct diagnosis rate.... would you trust a computer to give you medical advise based on decisions it makes though "software"?

Just think of the effect a bugs will have without strict supervision from a doctor to provide the second opinion.... or rather the computer provide the second opinion.

Legal liability with this type of thing is a worry - sure some people who are not "doctors" can become "experts" in a particular field but you can't allow them to dispense advice without the appropriate insurance and thought to legal issues of misdiagnosis. There is no guarantee that the "expert" will use the information for ONLY their personal use..... its a case of "quack" until proven "worthy"

Besides... there will always be other resources of the information - this is but one database, abeit one which maybe more useful... plenty others to choose from.

Doctors need to think of this as a tool and not as a threat to their job. Just because I can try to diagnose my problems online dosn't mean I don't see a doctor. I am glad when I visit the doctor and he uses the computer or medical books to check the current best treatments or for other conditions with similar symptons - this shows the doctor is not oblivious to the fact they can't know everything.

As long as the software is properly regulated, just as docotors are, then there really shouldn't be a problem. The doctors can use the software to "help" and then make the final decision on the best course of action, as the computer cannot do that.

  3. Commerical developer support to the mod community on The Mod Squad · · Score: 4, Interesting

The article is already /.ed so I need to ask.... was there any discussion about the support that devopers give to the mod community? I am not specifically talking about mapping and level designs but rather new game concepts adapted from the original.

Id Software seemed to start the mainstream trend with the Doom engine being easily adapted with the good folk that developed the right tools. Then Valve software came along and gave the fledging mod community a BIG helping hand to the point where they enter "partnerships" with the better and more popular mods (ie. CS of course). Even games like Morrowind and NWN ship with tools that say "Use Me !!!" to custom design or alter adventures. It almost seems expected of a developer to offer the extra incentive for what is probably the minority of users to keep the game "alive" until the next game by a developer is released... what with the 2-3 year development times now.

Civilisation addicted me to the turn based "civ like" genre, something which I am thankful for... except when I missed a uni exam coz I was playing Colonization 8 hours straight and forgot the time :(

To you "people" who complain that FreeCiv is "too old" and "out of date", close you damn mouths - you don't have pay for the game and you are certainly not forced to download and play it which means you have no right to criticize the hard work of the developers. If you want to criticize, make it constructive and useful instead of the usual "negative trolling flamebait" comments.

It also appears as if the Woomera test range is not the place to test things that fly if you want to take it home later.
Today's failure was the second project to experience recent difficulties at Woomera. Last October, an experimental rocket crashed after its guidance fins moved during flight and sent it off course following its Woomera launch. The rocket, the Hyshot scramjet being developed and trialled by Australian and British designers, was supposed to have gone to an altitude of 300km but only reached 61km before it crashed.

I don't particularily care HOW nice a cse looks..... unless it is functional as well then it is just pretty eye candy coating of a poor case design. Even the Chinese PC case market with all their plastic mouldings and bulges here and there have made "kind of decent" cases that allow the mobo to swing out like the G3/G4 power macs. I have Celeron2 based minitower cased in plastic mouldings beside me that I use as a home server - upgrading or swapping hard drives is just a "push button, flip out side, fark around inside for a bit, slam side shut".
