This is questioning the use of the item. The abuse of any crowd control measure is there an can be addressed in the same fashion. The only solution to this kind of question would be to let any mob of people, peaceful or not, to run free and hope for the best. That's not what the issue is here.
And just because the system can be abused doesn't mean it will either. While this system is non-lethal according to the article there seems to be some "damage" left on the victim. This damage is non-permanent but it's not different than the same types of traces left behind by, lets say, pepper spray.
I'm not doubting that there is the potential for abuse of this but I'd like to think that if this is going to be used domestically (in the US, for me) that there will be steps taken to know when the device is triggered and by whom. Police cars already have cameras that take note of things like the cars speed, if the red and blues are on, etc. Why couldn't this device be included in the same monitoring system?
how long before we see these things mounted to the top of S.W.A.T. vans for domestic crowd control? And, is that a bad idea?
Is using a non-lethal device for crowd control a bad idea? I'd guess it would depend on if this can create permanent harm or not. If it has no ill side-effects I'd say it's one hell of a lot better than tear gas that can kill people with some respiratory conditions.
Crowd control in an of itself is not a bad idea if that's what you're getting at.
Everyone who doesn't have a negative opinion of EA doesnt know jack about games.
Like I am having trouble believing that you are not some sort of shill for EA.
I didnt actually play the games you mentioned.
Thanks for the input. I can tell this is a fairly insightful set of remarks... You never played the games I mention but you know they have to suck (and I do to) simply because they're from EA? Fantastic. BTW: I never played most of the games you mentioned either, but I know enough to hold my tongue about making broad statements about an entire company because I like a few of their products. I did play the demo for BF2 and found it to be only moderately entertaining. I never had any of the problems you describe, but it was only a demo.
I don't play sports games but I have heard them roundly condemed by everyone who does.
Yeah, I hear this about Maden all the time... That's how it manages to remain one of the biggest selling game titles of all time, because the same people ("everyone" according to you) who hates the game buys it when the new year's version comes out. Again, I've never played the game.
Let's not try to be coy here because I'm having a problem interpreting exactly what you're saying. Infact statements like these are so non-committal that it makes me wonder if you're not sure of what you're trying to say or if you're just taking a cheap shot at EA.
According to you there are two types of game developers: creative and eye candy.
IMHO EA fits into both of these neat little categories that you've made. Sure, we all know the eye candy aspect of creating games like Maden. But EA also has gone out on a limb by publishing some fairly shaky (as in proven markets) titles like Alice and Undying. From my understanding EA took a bath on both of these games. I like both of them and own them but honestly if the game market is not buying these titles who can blame EA? They're not starving artists, they're a company that needs to pull a profit to keep people employed and to (hopefully) develop new and better products.
but in some ways, I would prefer Darwin to remove them from the road.
This actually doesn't help unless the offending driver dies in the accident. My guess is that none of your four accidents involved a fatality.
The only thing this does is reinforces the idea of "I need a bigger vehicle" in the eyes of the offending driver. Honestly, most people who own these SUVs out there do it for two reasons: they're insecure weenie boys or they feel safer knowing that when they come across the family of four in a Ford Fiesta they can run them completely over if the car slows down a bit.
So for these drivers that have wrecked into you are probably upgrading. Sure, in the short term their driving habits may change a bit but if they're over the age of 23 this probably will not be a long term effect. The next time they come across you you may not be so lucky as they may very well be driving the 12-liter Suburban Grande Flagship instead of the oh-so-humble Honda Civic.
you can expect an active dislike the way you would between, say, an Ann Coulter book and a Michael Moore book.
Actually, Ann and Mike are pop culture's politics. No one who's seriously into drilling down into the political quagmire is going to bother with either one of these entertainers. Entertainers is exactly what they are and shouldn't be taken as much else.
The "far" right and "far" left in this country have a ton in common compared to some of the wider based political parties that have an established voice elsewhere.
Basically any conversation on politics that has someone quoting either one of these "sources" as information is best left dismissed. Don't waste your time on people who think that AC and MM has an insight into real politics. Hunter Thompson is a million times more insightful than these misguided dogs... and normally much more fun to read as he didn't even take himself too seriously. Too bad the old man isn't still around.
It seemed like their covers was just "YET ANOTHER WW2 SHOOTER!"
While I see where you're going with this I will say that for a lot of year between HL1 and HL2 WW2 shooters were the only FPS (IMHO, of course) that got consistantly better. I'd take the original MOH over BF2 at this point because it was that good. Graphically? no, but it seemed like better game play to me. Again, IMHO.
For me the thrill in GTA is riding the bicycle around... that's all I did for the first few hours I played the game. I didn't follow story line, i didn't go around checking other stuff out... The bike rocks.
Maybe I'm just getting old but the comings and goings of the game industry at large bore me anymore. I've thrown out my last six copies of PC Gamer without hardly turning a page.
Or maybe I've just become bored of their endless fanboi masturbatory habits. I can't speak for the magazines listed in the blurb but I don't see a real value to gaming mags that spend as much time patting themselves on the back as they do giving real content about games.
That's true of most laws. Stuff like the Patriot act, the "assault weapons" ban and the DMCA are all examples of laws that don't trouble a large number of people but under some circumstances and bad interpretation of these laws they could easily turn into monsters. Hell, the assault weapons ban was so open ended that they could have made BB guns illegal with little or no legal resistance.
These are NOT innovations, in *any* way, shape or form. They are product polishing.
OK, so what is the last desktop app that you've seen that is innovative by those standards?
Not to sound trollish nor to apologize for MS bringing little new to the table but it's a tired argument that if someone takes something old, puts a new spin to it and finds acceptance than that person has created anything new, but rather stole from others.
It's like the music debate where a bunch of Zeppelin fans constantly go on and on about how Pearl Jam fans should feel the need to pay homage to LZ because PJ is nothing more than a LZ rip off. If we really had to see things that way we'd all be praising some cave man beating on a hollow log with a stick for being the first drummer.
I can not recall the last time I've seen something that didn't strike me as product polishing.
It may bring up the "ugh!" factor but normally W2K's repair console seems to work for most of the drive problems I have. What does the Gentoo offer that would be worthwhile?
Only the first two discs are really important. Not to say the third disk should be overlooked but... 2112 in it's entirety and the boys had a chance to mature their live set a bit more? Fantastic. ESL is good too though.
Ha! You're pathetic. You had to take a single sentence out of context to make you feel good about yourself? Go ahead. It's unbelievable to me that you STILL can not answer to the FACT that you took it out of context. Get over yourself.
What's worse is that you had to blow it all out of proportions. Do you realize how much of an ass you have made of yourself? LOL!
You think nothing. You got your panties in a bunch because you could twist my words by taking them out of context. Now you act like you've been dogging me all along? Please. Your "original point" wasn't a point at all since it was taken out of context. You still can't answer to that.

Thanks for the rant and the insults.
Gosh, wonder where EA fits in?
Let's not try to be coy here because I'm having a problem interpreting exactly what you're saying. Infact statements like these are so non-committal that it makes me wonder if you're not sure of what you're trying to say or if you're just taking a cheap shot at EA.

Popping off a few shots in the direction of the car in front of you also helps to move things along.

Yeah, keep making an ass out of yourself. I have more people agreeing with me on these points than you.
It seemed like their covers was just "YET ANOTHER WW2 SHOOTER!"

Not to be an ass about it but "The Vede" kinda sucks any way you slice him.

Like a Grannie Smith apple? Those are good cooking and baking apples. Don't knock it.

"Different Stages" by Rush... but that's obviously not what you mean.
Yeah, your point?
Maybe people are buying these to copy their collection over to the Zune...
At least MS gives you that option. Perhaps it is limited but it's better than nothing. It's not like they're DRMing your original copy.
I carve my own Lego out of bricks of solid gold! I've never had a defective one yet!
