Its hard to say because the brain has never had to even function that long. We really have no idea how a brain would hold up after 200 years. Does the brain even have a mechanism for dealing with running out of capacity? Or does it just "overwrite" old unused stuff? I don't want to say that the brain wasn't intended to last that long, because truth be told it wasn't intended for anything. But it certainly evolution hasn't had to deal with ways of keeping a brain running well for centuries.
This is simply untrue. Do gene frequencies vary in the population? If they do, that means natural selection is still happening. As long as some people have more children that survive to adulthood than others natural selection continues.
Maybe it was a pocket dial? The guy playing GTA sat on his phone and dialed the coworker, who picked up the phone to hear this line...that would make more sense.
A lot. But I still think solar is the future. Of course, the only way to really do it is orbital generation, no cloudy days, and in geostationary orbit they are very rarely even in the earth's shadow. Power generation 24x7, totally clean. Of course, this is not cost effective or really plausible today. But it is a good reason to spend money on solar research and lowering the cost to orbit.
I recommend Coding Workshop's polyphonic wizard...yes they also make a popular rootkit, but their program is pretty cool, it includes a WAP server for your mac or pc so you can transfer the files.
You could always use the and neutron bomb-boiling water. My mother used to do this to get rid of ants nests and it was a little frightening. Basically a kettle of boiling water kills all the ants instantly.
This article from The Nation (yes, I am aware that The Nation puts the Liberal in Liberal Media) has a really good discussion of the morality of war. The fact being that people, including innocent people die. You'd better have a pretty good reason to go to war. The kind of reason that you would be willing to die for. The kind of reason that when you hear about children being killed accidently you can honestly believe it was worth it. (see: World War II) Someone trying (yet failing) to create and hide weapons is not this kind of reason.
Isreali Counter-terrorism strategy: If you get stung by a bee, give their nest a couple of hard whacks. This will teach them not to sting you.
American Strategy: If you get stung by a bee go give a wasp's nest a couple of hard whacks. This will demonstrate to the bees that you mean business and they will stop stinging you.
Webvan was so awesome. I will never forget my first delivery. It was just awesome. I've never had that kind of feeling about a for profit service. The quality was great and they brought the groceries into your kitchen. So great. I was really bummed when they went out of business.
You know what, you're right. Saddam was never planning on playing nice. But I still don't see why that means we were doomed to re-invade. I know its a tired arguement, but there are a lot of not nice governments and we aren't invading their countries. Saddam does not seem to have posed any serious threat to the United States, immediate or otherwise. There is no evidence to suggest any relationship between Saddam and Al Quaida, and if Saddam had any deployable WMDs (which is unlikely) they were certainly far from a state of readiness at which they would pose any threat to the even the neighbors of Iraq, let alone the United States.
I assume the worst because their is no evidence to suggest otherwise. The lead up to war and the intelligence supporting it demonstrates either gross incompetence or deliberate misleading on the part of the administration. The handling of Iraq since the invasion has been a complete disaster, mostly due to an (apparhent) complete failure to anticipate anything but the most rosy of post war senarios.
So its not an assumption. I wasn't against this war because I'm naive, stupid or ignorant. (although its possible I'm all three and don't know it...) This war never struck me as necessary. If it was the administration has completely failed to demonstrate that it has been worth the cost in lives, money and international esteem.
If that frightens you, well, sorry. The president frighens me
No kidding. To that I say to Mr. Bush: "oh, you mean you are really damned if you do, damned if you don't and you are trapped in an unwinnable quagmire? Well boo hoo, if you'd listened when we told you this was a bad idea and not lied your way into this situation you wouldn't have to deal with it."
I really disagree with him on a lot of his political points, but you've gotta love the "you can't handle the truth" hot key. I love that movie and I really love that scene. But I always interpreted the point of the scene differently. I thought the general looked pathetic, that he really believed that his mission to protect freedom made the ends worth the means. Of course, his mission was to protect Gitmo from cuba, which is a pretty damn useless missions.
But I really like the idea of Donald Rumsfeld, standing in front of some congressional commission:
Senator McCain: Mr. Rumsfeld, did you order the homorerotic abuse?
Rumsfeld: I did the job you sent me to do.
Senator McCain: Did you order the homorerotic abuse?
I know its a joke post, but...These machines already exist. It is --relatively-- simple to make a machine that follows a script, the performs the exact same actions over and over again, like folding paper and sticking them in envelopes. Or welding cars. The magic here is the automatic planner, the software figures out what folds to make and in what order. That's fancy stuff right there.
I think most slashdotters who want to blog should have no trouble writing their own blog/cms. With PHP/mySql its basically the most simple interactive web app you can write. Of course all that other crap you get with moveable type like trackback and block rolls are a little more complex, but there is something very satisfying about writing your own blog cms.
Disney is involved. Sure it could be good. But those bastards have a talent for messing things up, so I wouldn't hold my breath. All descisions at Disney are based on the ideas of the most powerful exec of the week. If he isn't available they use data from focus groups of stoned college freshmen.
Well, that's your opinion. I really liked it. A lot of geeks like me like it too. I like the baroque saga because I am a sucker for historical fiction, a sucker for the history of computing, a sucker for the history of science and a sucker for sword fighting.
I think people read for different reasons. I know that people that enjoy science fiction don't read for the same reasons that "lit geeks" do. If you are reading Golding, you're probably a lit geek. My girlfriend is one as well and she can't understand the appeal of Stephenson, or Broken Angels, or even a historical novel like Unicorn's Blood.
I have trouble understanding why people like to read Salinger short stories or Jonathan Franzen, that stuff is boring for me. I think people like me read to be taken places we can't go or just to be wowed by the application of neat ideas, as seen in Snow Crash. (or even some of those Niven books, which are written in a way that would give a lit geek fits). Lit geeks seem to read out of an appreciation for the art of writing. They like how a writing might layer symbolism into a passage, or how they challenge conceptions of narrative. (just examples, I'm not a lit geek, ask one what they like about peoples writing) My girldfriend likes books that are emotionaly evocative without being trite. I personally don't care for that.
So anyway, maybe you think that Snow Crash was silly. I think it was cool and exactly the kind of book I want to read. If you are looking for the height of the craft of writing...you aren't looking for Stephenson. If you are looking for a geek adventure that will be fun to read and also explore all sorts of cool bits of history, then, I suggest stephenson.
As an aside, I like some lit and I think its because it does take me to worlds I haven't seen. I liked Remains of the Day and its insight into the life of a servant. I like some Wharton because it interesting to see what life was like in America, esp New York, at the time. And if you don't like Wodehouse you haven't read it.

My god people can be awful to each other. (I didn't see the video, the still from the NY times was enough) It makes me very ill to think about this crap. Hey, humanity, can we not have anymore wars, ok? Can we try that? That means you guys in Sudan too.
Well, all we know is that Saddam didn't have them anymore when the US invaded. That seems to explain why Han Blix didn't find anything when his team was in Iraq before the war. I don't think there was any "evidence of absence" that would have satisfied the Bush administration and called of the war.
Luckily, thanks to Mr. Bush & co we have succesfully captured thousands of tons of VX guns and some yellow cake uranium. Iraq is also now a peaceful democracy and a shining becon of freedom to the middle east.
flamebait!?! This is crazy. I don't care if you like the gimp, feel free to use it. I just don't like it and can't use it to do my job. Why mod me flamebait for that?
I have no opinion on your website, like the rest of the replies here. But I must say, you have a couple of very cute kitties!
You my friend, are an idiot troll. You know what? A mac is UNIX. They are really good for networking.

Great, keyloggers, backdoors and root kits. The wonderful world of dubious software.

I love this analogy. My version:
Isreali Counter-terrorism strategy: If you get stung by a bee, give their nest a couple of hard whacks. This will teach them not to sting you.
American Strategy: If you get stung by a bee go give a wasp's nest a couple of hard whacks. This will demonstrate to the bees that you mean business and they will stop stinging you.

Oh man that sounds so fun. I would love to see what this output. Maybe it WOULD fool a human grader.
