You forgot the part after Marge gets the job and she's shown to her office, with a gigantic, complicated machine inside. Marge: Umm... what I am supposed to do? Smithers (chuckles): Marge, please. According to your resume, you INVENTED this machine.

Just want to point out that this happened at a COUNTER-STRIKE tournament. It seems to me that the individual is to blame in this case, because this is a game where you should be learning how to take down terrorists, not take down some random person who happens to piss you off.

Here's a another informative page on My Pal Mickey, discussing a little bit on the tech, and possible future upgrades for the doll (i.e., a built-in digicam, acting as an electronic "FastPass").

A friend of mine who works over in DW told me about this a couple months ago. Seems like it's a steal for $50, if not just for the amount of tech in it. And with the right amount of hackability, I would have a ball with this at home:

Pal Mickey: Hey, Tony! You've just entered the kitchen. How about a beer?

Me: Well, I was kind of thirsty... Thanks, Pal Mickey!

So, I'm wondering: does DDR appeal to that technical adherence to a rythmn in contrast to real dancing?

That it does. After you've played the game a while, you'll notice that most steps will follow each beat in the song. Sometimes there'll be steps thrown in that conicide with lyrics and sound effects and the like, so in that respect, it is a little bit about the groove. But at it's core, DDR is about stepping to the song's rhythm. So, in a word, yes. :)

Did you look at just the winner for the last tournament? Admittedly, I didn't think the winning routine for that one was all that impressive either. I'd suggest looking at footage for some of the other tourneys (especially the older ones, because they're the ones that blazed the trails). Also, think about how much style they're getting out AND the limited amount of physical space (though, a good freestyler doesn't have to do all their moves on the platform exclusively).

[Also, for anyone who noticed, sorry for the double post.]

First time I ran into DDR was at a local Fun Zone. Some kid was "dancing" on some pads, appearantly having fun. Paying a dollar for maybe 5 minutes. The night before I was in a club dancing for free. Better music, more people, and it didn't cost me a thing.

Well, the point of DDR is not only to possibly look cool "dancing," but that there's a challenge to it. The underlying fundamental is that the steps follow the beat, so the game tests how well you can "groove". Remember, it's a game, and no game is really fun if it's not challenging.

I'm all cool with what people find fun, but DDR is outright lame. Not because dancing in public is lame, but because it's expensive,

If you're looking to just dance, then yes, it is expensive. But if you like the game, then it's really not that much more expensive than any of the other novelty games (light gun, racing, etc.) you'd find in an arcade.

    the music isn't the best,

Like a lot of things in life, "good" music is subjective. I personally like the music in DDR. Sure, it's not the same kind of music you'd find at a club or a rave or something, but you also have to keep in mind that this was originally a Japanese game. So, most of the music was produced in Japan, and for me, that's what I find appealing about it. The songs are unique and different, and ever so slightly catchy.

and you look like a fool in an arcade dancing on some buttons.

Well, if you're enjoying the game, what does it matter what other people think? You're having fun, and that's all that matters. :) But if you want to look smooth, too, you don't have to play for just step accuracy. You can play what's called "freestyle," where you hit the arrows correctly enough that you don't fail, but you also pull your own moves. That brings on the extra challenge of getting the steps AND looking cool. Just check any of the top player tournament footage out there, and TELL me you're not impressed.

Whatever, I guess I'm just trolling.

Eh, maybe just a little. ;)
