Why not work on a project to keep your skills and mind sharp, make networking/people connections, show employers you can work on a project, successfully, without constant supervision, and at least let your next employer know that you were pro-active not re-active and that your attitude wasn't of bumming around wondering when your next entitlement was comming from. (Feel free to define "entitlement" for yourself. It could be many things.)
I was shocked when I started my present job, where one 4 year degreed CS graduate told me that he would never work on an open source project because he would never want to lose control of the code he wrote. The shock was not that he wanted control of his code, but that he would use little else but open source programs and that he was not very forward looking to his next job (which he wanted in software developement - talk about losing of control of code) nor the recoginition of open source's growing part in software use, and recipricating back to that which he so freely uses.
While I am currently unable to contribute code to any open source project, I have contributed my translating abilities to one: BibleTime - Spanish translation. Once I get better at C and C++, I will absolutely be contributing to open source projects. Heck, maybe I can find a niche to fill and start my own open source project someday.
When Red Hat gets their turn, maybe they can install linux in them and call them a badger.
Give the non-technical a chance to contribute.

CSS for the LDP?
·
· Score: 1
There is no reason for there not to be css for the LDP, unless the reason is that the same people responsible for the content want or think they should be the same people who provide the presentation. Otherwise, let someone else, likely more talented in the presentation arena, be responsible for it; give someone else with a diferent talent a chance to contribute and give back to a community that has possibly helped them.
You merely point out the monetary value of an item. There are other values that are not so quantifiable:
freedom
control/power
satisfaction
all value derivable of subjectivity
Monetary exchange, or the potential thereof, is not the end-all in determining value in an item or idea. I work with a man who will not release any code of his own under the GPL. When asked why, he gave one reason: the lose of control of code he has authored.
Only in the realm of monetary exchange does your definition of value hold water. The reason it is not a sufficient answer to my contention is that there are people who value things for reasons other than money.
You should still consider rephasing/clarifying your statement instead of giving a narrow definition you preassume everyone holds to.
"...as Linux erodes the value of intellectual property."
That doesn't seem accurate considering even Linus protects his copyrights around Linux. Otherwise the same would not be copyrighted by him.
Albeit Linux wasn't copyrighted at the first. When someone else did copyright the name Linux, that squater's rights to it were challenged and Linus gained rightful controll over the same in which he has so great a stake.
Perhaps it is better to say that Linux is openning intellectual property up to being shared as opposed to being squirreled away solely for individual profit.
The fact that Christensen belittles, let alone mentions, the GPL smacks of guilt to the core. What he is saying is:
~Even if we did jack code from MPlayer, the GPL wouldn't be able to stop us anyway.~
One of the worst things that could come out of SCO vs. IBM is the case settled out of court. The GPL needs to be properly tested in order to set precedence for cases like this one.
Would it be safe to say that SCO vs. IBM (and now Intel) is almost like "death by cop" or, more appropriately: "death by train"... SCO just wants to step in the way?
Concerning resolution changes there are two commands that will increase or decrease your screen resolution.
(Drum roll, please...)
"ctl (+) alt (+) -" and
"ctl (+) alt (+) +"
However, these two little humdingers might not return you exact results you expected. On my system I get odd results like a magnified screen with a virtual desktop that will not display everything on my monitor at once. X will still show that which is off the screen if I move my mouse toward it. Otherwise it most likely be the solution you were hoping for.
P.S. I don't know if when doing this that your X configuration could have incompatable resolutions that are not supported by your monitor whereby 1) the screen could go blank, or 2) at worst there is an incompatable refresh rate that gets sent to your monitor thereby damaging it.
While the idea of book piracy may not be new the "age of book piracy" is.
Perhaps it's because their is a generation so cheap that it is willing to suffer the reading of heaps of text on a screen, especially a non-CRT screen, or there is a generation that is on the rise that has read significantly more on a computer screan than they have on paper and thus have no qualms about massive reading, as in the case of the most recent Harry Potter, on a computer. Once a generation like that is in place, and assuming they like to read, then there will be just as much ado about it as there is about other piracy and rightly so.
"The idea is called a genetic algorithm. It creates a random population of potential solutions, then tests each one for success,..." The author also calls it "fitness function." Where in the world would such a thing be found in nature: The idea that there is some goal of walking or having wings or having skin instead of scales or wings instead of fins or limbs.
This program, like any other "successful" program is not successful unless some outside force (in this case a human) tells it when it will be successful. It is nothing less than preposterous to state that there are "successful" genes in nature (see end of second paragraph). How would genes be known, particularly in the case of the "evolution" of walking, to be successful unless some outside force had designed it to so that it would
have a goal to determine "success" and
have the ability to know what was heading in the right direction in the first place, particularly over successive generations?
So, my conclussion is that you know nothing of programming, don't care about programming, are willing ignorant of the logic expoused above, or are set in your religion of evolution and when a straw comes along to grasp at you take it, even when it makes you look like a hater of reason.
The opening quote from the last paragraph reads:
"You state your objectives, let the thing
evolve with the optimum combination of parts at the lowest price, and the machine will be there this afternoon," (my emphasis)
But the one quoted should have instead said:
"You state your objectives, let the thing
test every possibility with the optimum combination of parts at the lowest price, and the machine will be there this afternoon," (my emphasis).
That Iranian TV station is a station that has been used in lue of cell phones, and other communications within Iran, to organize protests against the current hard line religious government (because the same government shuts them down). These protests are likely to be precursors to the current member of the 'Axis of Evil' (and I don't mean that sarcastically at all) falling in a relatively peaceful means. Read: U.S. troops not having any intervention therein and the Iranian people freeing and regulating themselves.
The fact that the jamming signal has been found to be originating from Cuba should be telling of what kind of animal the Cuban government is:
It is willing to side with an enemy (hard line Islamist) that has a common enemy (the U.S.) whom upon the destruction of that common enemy (the U.S.) would in turn start its war on them (Cuba).
Besides being telling of the nature of Communist it is also foolish of them.
I don't mind knowing that this man is still a delusional maniac. But I'm going to wait for the hammer to hit the anvil when this goes to trial and all his delusions of being bought out are shown to be but mirages of his puffed-up mind before I go reading any article full of his garbage. It's like some kind of bad school yard nightmare: I know a secret! I know a secret! Hee! Hee! Hee! But with a lot more at stake.
Besides, what would SCO know about what IBM wants or not. His rantings are like the smack of middle school juveniles vaunting themselves over the disinterest of a love interest they so long for:
The second year of my teaching career I had a principal who said that the teacher himself/herself was the curiculum. At the time I disagreed in that some classes necessitated the transference of knowledge regardless of who or what the teacher was.
Several years later I now see his point.
If the class is about computers and how to use them in a particular fashion then go for it. However, it is apparent that the class is about language and the use thereof to communicate. Typing on a computer is a slow means of communicating. It follows then that precious time can/might/will be lost via that means.
Therefore, it is my professional opinion that they be used as a supplimental means to teaching the class and not a primary means:
get them from out in front of the students and give them what's in your heart (that is to say: all of you) and not what you or they can put up on a monitor.
I have taken 3 graduate classes that were internet based. My experience is that unless I just absolutely enjoy the subject being taught then forcing me to do online that which could be done, the real interactive way, in class is a horrible waste of your students' time.
So,please don't rob your students of the valuable input that comes from the spontaneous interaction that can only happen in a classroom setting, especially when it comes to asking for critiques of one another. Doing this in class or face to face can save lots of their time.
However, you can have students post the process that a particular paper is going through; their changes and what not. For instance: documenting in a blog what he/she incorporated from student X's critique.
I have six years of paid teaching experience in Spanish and just as many in other areas on a volunteer basis...

For that matter, why not make a contest out it?
The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It
Pay special attention to the part(s) about planning and the division of labor and how contracts go hand in hand with them. A good read all around.

I like Raymond's solution to Windows problems:
Q:.
I'm having problems with my Windows software. Will you help me?
A:.
Yes. Go to a DOS prompt and type format c:. Any problems you are experiencing will cease within a few minutes.
It may not be a nice solution (to some) but it will be a permanent solution to a very anoying operating system.
