i hate to think of the poor smuck who buys a dell PC with an 80 g Hd, 512 ram and a single core celery WITH VISTA pre installed. It must crawl...i just got a box( soon to have xp pro OR ubuntu) with vista and with a g of ram and a dual core it is slower than my last box( 3 years old 1800 amd and 512 ram). Vista looks ok...speed sux!
this is a joke....a goverment with the resources of china has already lifted the black blanket and seen the US sub in all it's glory. By the time secrets filter out into the world of the average guy, they have long since been exposed to nations with the resources to employ a spy network.
i live in a shit hole town in southeast texas. I was getting 2.5 to 3 mbps on DSL. AT&T offered 6 mbps service, but AFTER i subscribed told me OOPS you live too far from switch we can sell you 3 mbps only. I switched to cable( after too many service ouages lasting over a DAY and requiring a tech to come service ancient lines around my home. I just got time warner cable. Max is 5 mbps advertised. I clocked 4.3 down and 350 kbps up at around 6pm on a saturday. For 59.95 a month i am kinda happy BUT according to DSLreports.com west coast roadrunner is running like 22mbps( iguess they have faster coyotes out there?) on the up side.
yes, but what really costs the money is not producing the records for those flops...BUT paying the 2 or so MILLION per artist to get the songs played on FM radio. Even though "Payola" is illegal, labels pay third parties( who have exclisive rights to FM broadcasts) major money to get a song heard. Do not feel bad THEY LOVE THIS. This multi-million dolalr expense insures that not very many artists can get on the air AND that artists NEED the labels( thus fork over most of the cash from records) to make it. This is why labels HATE net radio.
ok..i have worked on sets...something you do not realize...movie jobs are not like engineers. You do not get a salary. A guy might work 12 hours at say 300 per day as an assistant editor, he still gets credit. Hell some people on the credits of smaller movies may recieve credit as the ONLY form of payment.
The payrolls are not bloated as you see. They just have a LOT of people doing things. Sure the stars and the director work full time(plus) during the production, but the guy with 3 minutes of dialogue still gets credit for his 2 days of work
actually in America it is just the opposite. People without health insurance go to th ER with small health problems. This costs 10 times as much as them going to a doc's office, but that is all they can do, so this jacks up the price of healthcare for everyone. It would be MUCH cheaper in my state( TX) to provide means tested health insurance at little or no cost, than to not provide it and let poor people get healthcare at the only place they can..th ER.
AIDS is a perfect disease for bringing a new cure to the market. In the US AIDS treatments get fastracked and loads of "free guvment cheese " to help out with costs. In AFRICA, well let's just saythere is little goverment to get in the way of bringing a drug to market, esp one that combats somethign as tragic as HIV over there.
we still need the two terms for at least one reason- many people with HIV do not develope AIDS. Some people ( a small number who have been studued like hell by now) do not for a LONG time, maybe forever, develope AIDS even though infected with HIV.
Other diseases that attack the immune system have seperate names, LUPIS for example. I do not see what the problem here is. There are plenty of names to go around. And it is not like many other names for things where made before we had understanding of the cause/inner workings. We do not need to go renaimeing things everytime there is a breakthrough in science...we just make another name to narrow the field. I believe AIDS was first called "Gay Related Cancer" in the US.
how many people REALLY are affected by murder, terror, and child porn? I mean outside of the lost freedoms.
Sure WTC was a tragedy BUT in terms of other wars, we are relatively safe. Nobody thinks Benlain is going to invade the USA and round us all up into camps.
Murder is rarely (esp murder by strangers not spouse, relative, crime partner)committed against the GENERAL public. Cameras at stop lights are not gonna stop gang hits OR spousal murder. The gangs will just break the camera's 1st ( or avoid them somehow) and the spouse will likely kill his/her spouse inside.
Child porn, according to reliable statistics is not all that common. Commercial child porn even less so. I study in teh 90's showed most widely distributed child porn ( used in prosicutions) to have been produced LEGALLY in sweden before the laws went into effect banning it. They are busting guys for trading the same old images from th 70's. Those children are my age now...Serial pedophiles( the ones who molest strange children, not relitives ) are fairly rare also. As is stranger child murder or abduction.
Do not get me wrong, all the things are bad, shocking horrible acts. They are just also rare and not worth spending resources to go after to the degree that we would be with cameras and such. The impact will be too low and the cost in freedom too great
i would be vary happy if a copyrighted work had to be published to keep the extensions granted. Maybe life of the author plus X number of years after last publication. With a small fee every decade to keep the work out of public domain.
sure if you are talking about brick adn mortor pirates you are right..for now...however I download DVD's all the time...I almost NEVER burn them to a physical disk. I watch them and erase them. it costs me only bandwidth..and as of now that is too limited to DL many blue ray titles....
Also CRACKED blue ray discs could easily be stored on another media format with the same outpout capability..HD-DVD or some other media..
although this was a joke, a phone with the form factor of the new shuffle would be IMHO the coolest thing EVER, provided it had blue tooth. I have LONGED for a simple, extremely small phone with no features whatsoever accept bluetooth. NOTHING to use up battery( like color display, etc) aand fully able to link with a full size PDA( that I might carry sometimes but NOT when i only need a phone).
Imagine pushing one button, speaking the name you wanted to call and that was it. Imagine being able to choose to carry a fully functional PDA when you needed it, and only when you needed it BUT NO XTRA CLUNKY SMART PHONE!
and turning this off will be the key to blue ray piracy..mark my word...
Why are there no blue ray pirates? there are not enough blue ray players to make pirating them worth it. The only attacks will be hackers trying to beat the frontline encrytion. When the money is there, real pirates will use lower tech workarounds that may take some time BUT will work.
dell asked me to send a laptop back to them for service WITH THE HARD DRIVE REMOVED. I asked them why..they said "Because it may contain private information" I guess that is part of the neww return to depot poicy they have. I was impressed. Of course it was a new laptop so I told them screw off you get the whole thing back..lol
my concerns are more about accidental downloads and models who may be legal in another area( the age of consent being much lower in almost all other countries) but not the US.
Take asians for example. I dunno what the legal age for taking pictures of a girl is in japan, but i bet it is under 18. A ligit, legal website in japan may show this and it could be illegal in the USA.
If somebody posts a zip file with say, 10,000 pictures of women in hardcore sex scenes and say 3 of those are under 18. I might download something illegal without knowledge or intent to do so. Even the most ardent slashdotter would take a while to masterbate to 10k photo's.
ok not an incentive to run linux, just a way to NOT purchase windows vista with a new PC from Dell. That alone is great for folks like us who do not want that crap on our PC's and resent having to pay for it!
ok reasons why hoem users use windows: 1. everybody else does 2. it comes with the computer 3. They get support from dell,HP, Gateway, etc 4. It runs all the programs they need 5. It is what they use at work/school 6. They know how to( well kinda)
This removes reasons 2 and 3 pretty well. Our company is about to upgrade FROM WINDOWS 98. And I can tell you do to our purchasing guy HATING Vista and trying ubuntu, it will be to a LINUX distro. This is great news!

the Net Radio Star shot first!

with sexy girls putting together computers...this will sell to the /dot crowd..me included..who is with me?!
well if one of the was a robot chuck norris..he could kill the ninja robots and the rest of the enemy in one roundhouse kick!

no it will not. As a result of efforts to ship HIVSP2, the security holes patches will be made in the next full release HIV Longhorn
the cancer conspiracy theory is bogus..first off "big pharnma" has released drugs that prevent(hpv) or cure( certain types of lukemia) cancer already.

but clinton did that TOO! And at least when Dick Cheney takes money from big companies, they are AMERICAN! Clinton took money from the damn CHINESE!
