Iraq has declared that it only produced VX on a pilot scale, just a few tonnes and that the quality was poor and the product unstable.
Indeed, even one of the documents provided by Iraq indicates that the purity of the agent, at least in laboratory production, was higher than declared.
There are also indications that the agent was weaponised.
And later on regarding chemical bombs:
In the absence of evidence to the contrary, we must assume that these quantities are now unaccounted for.
The discovery of a number of 122 mm chemical rocket warheads in a bunker at a storage depot 170 km southwest of Baghdad was much publicized.
Since then it [Iraq] has reported that it has found a further 4 chemical rockets at a storage depot in Al Taji.
There are strong indications that Iraq produced more anthrax than it declared, and that at least some of this was retained after the declared destruction date. It might still exist. Either it should be found and be destroyed under UNMOVIC supervision or else convincing evidence should be produced to show that it was, indeed, destroyed in 1991.
This report indicates (by my reading at least) that yes, the inspectors did find weapons of mass destruction and believed there were most likely more in Iraq's possession. I have been unable to find any indication that Blix changed his opinions between that report and the war, in all seriousness please let me know if you can find any. I much prefer being corrected when wrong.
I am still waiting for someone to show me anyone who said Iraq did not have these weapons before the invasion. I am beginning to believe it will never occur because approximately zero people believed it prior to the invasion.
"Regardless, we (the US) currently has a terrible disaster on our hands."
No the Iraqi people have the disaster on their hands, the US just has an inconvenient and expensive problem by comparison. It will soon be forgotten about.
While I see your point, I don't agree. Personally (that's all I can speak for) I feel we (the US) have a responsibility to help them (the Iraqis) out of the mess. I feel we are responsible for it (with which I am sure you agree) and must not "abandon" them unless they request it.
It was apparently much harder to say "if they tell us they don't want us, we won't go".
Weren't the UN supposed to have a say in whether
"the reason for the reactivation of conflict (failure to comply with the terms of the original cease fire)"
this was the right course of action.
Not sure I agree with that one. My recollection of the first war was that the UN said it was OK, then the US declared war (along with the "coalition"). The cease fire was not signed with the UN, it was signed with the US (and the coalition). I may not have a correct memory there, but because of that, in my mind's eye, it is p
I can and have pointed out so many people saying that there were weapons. Please support your point that the weapons inspectors said there were not, as opposed to pointing to them saying they couldn't find any. Those are different things. After the first Gulf War, it was known that Iraq had chemical weapon stores. Evidence of their removal/destruction was unavailable. That is pretty close to proof that they still are in existence, no? I am not saying the war was good, the war was handled well, anything of that sort, I am simply saying that turning around afterwards and saying, "see, we told you there were no WMDs" when approximately zero people were saying that prior to the invasion is a bit childish and silly.
I continue to wait for you (or anyone else) to provide me with references to people prior to the invasion saying definitively that Iraq did not possess WMDs. I would be overjoyed if you were able to provide this, it would make me feel much better about my current hatred of the situation, but as it stands, no one has. All we have is people turning around and saying we were lied to by Bush etc. when as I remember, everyone was saying the same things he was in the build up to war.
Personally, I feel a continuation of the first Gulf war was justified given the fact that Saddam refused to adhere to the terms of the cease fire he signed. I am extremely upset that this was not the justification given for the "second" war. Regardless, we (the US) currently has a terrible disaster on our hands. How to get out of it is a tough question. I think I certainly stand in the "if they tell us they want us out, out we go" camp. From my perspective, the reason for the reactivation of conflict (failure to comply with the terms of the original cease fire) has been alleviated, so if they (the Iraqi people) decide they are better off with US troops not around, more power to them and sent the troops back home. What this will do long term is a tough question to answer, and something I should probably share my thoughts on in a different post.
As for the justness of this war, the sheer number of so-called honest people telling us lies in order to get us to go to war have been astounding. Weapons of mass destruction? Non-existent. Uranium? ditto. Saddam and Al Qaeda? Wrong.
I thought we had gotten to the point I wouldn't have to ask this question again. I explain to my 4 year old son that lying is saying something you know to not be true. Can you please point to me references where anyone prior to the invasion gave evidence that Saddam didn't have WMDs? I have asked this question at least a dozen times, no one has stepped up to the plate yet. Are you ready to be the first? I doubt it, since essentially everyone prior to the invasion was certain Saddam was in possession of WMDs or the ability to produce them. Given that everyone thought that, it is not lying. I continue to wait for evidence to the contrary.
I am not saying this is a justification for the invasion, merely pointing out that the context was not a lie.
Weird Al is one of my favorite people ever. He's pretty good to his fans, he fights the true fight, and is hilarious to boot. I can't wait for this next album.
He used to be one of my favorites as well, until he was interviewed on The Bob & Tom Show, where they played a song from The Electric Amish. Amazingly, a couple months later, here comes "Amish Paradise." When asked about his inspiration for that, no mention of who clued him in to the fun of the Amish. Best part is, many Amish in Indiana absolutely love The Electric Amish (but don't tell the parson!!!).
I work there, it sounds like a good match for you. We do a lot of interest stuff across a huge spectrum of interests, and encourage (at least my division does) people to pursue their own ideas. The pay isn't top notch, but the city is inexpensive and the benefits are solid. I would definitely encourage you to give it a look, assuming you don't mind heat too much.
Google Maps/Earth is cool, but how does it compare to shaping everyones lives like color tv and the transistor.
Too early to tell. Let's check back in 40 years.
Why do you want to wait so long? Did the transistor not have a major impact on lives until 1987? Most consider the birth of the transistor to be 22 December 1947 at Bell Labs. I would dare say it didn't take but 20 years for it to show the promise of revolutioning society.
I was in a real bad wreck in 1976, my brain hardly worked for a year or more, but I got better....
Since then, the thought has occurred to me that I could have actually gone into a coma and the last forty years could have been a dream.
Either I went into a coma and completely missed the years 2007 - 2015, you are including the 10 years prior to your accident in your coma/dream, or your brain isn't up to snuff on math since the accident!
Again, not intending to poke fun at your struggles, but it sure made me chuckle when I saw the second sentence.
And here I thought I was going to be all that and correct you. I was taught in school the 1960 definition (Krypton-86 wavelength), not the 1983 definition (yours, the correct one), and have blissfully unaware of the change. Thanks for enlightening me this morning!
For reference, here is what NIST has to say about the matter.
I think going after companies and websites advertised in SPAM woudld do more damage. Get a 1 mil dollar fine and they wont be making the same mistake twice.
What an excellent idea. Then, anyone who is running a website or ecommerce business who wants to put their competitors out of business can simply hire out a bot-net and fire off spam in their competitors' names. Brilliant! More ways for bot-nets to generate income for their masters.
Having just attended a SANS class (one week, tons of fun, learned a boatload), I would highly recommend them. Not everything there is available on the web (well, sort of, but the stories from the storm center certainly aren't). The course I took was taught by Ed Skoudis, easily one of the best lecturers I have even seen. At the end, yes, we got to play capture the flag.
The study defined 'heavy' use as more than 2,000 total hours, or approximately one hour of use per workday for 10 years
200 work days in a hear? I get two weeks vacation, plus 8 holidays at my job. That means I work about 240 days a year (52*5-10-8). Sucks to be American I guess.
In bussines, timing is everything. MS has missed this oportunity (as every other time).
I'm sorry, but I have to question your thinking here. Timing is everything you say, then you say they have missed opportunity "every other time." How again has Microsoft not done well as a business? If having tens of billions of dollars in cash, revenue greater than many countries GNPs, and brand recognition around the world is bad business, what do you consider "good" business?
well who could have believed that intelligence apparatus intel was bullsh* one wonders how bloody narrowminded a whole nation can be...
Whole nation or whole world? Can you please show me anyone who before the invasion was saying Iraq was not in possession WMDs? I don't want you to just name names, I want some references. I have a whole bag of references to people who said they were, they were a threat, ranging from the US, the UK, Germany, Russia, and even France. I have yet to find anyone with references to the contrary, so please step up to the plate and provide them.
Did I say the Fundamentalists have a respect for life? Did I say that? I don't recall saying that. I recall saying that the insurgents have respect for it.
I was about to step in and suggest they mistook your post, but you got there first (good). I am going to go totally off topic here, but I have a question for you, I want to know if you are thinking along the same lines I am. I too have a mild degree of respect for the insurgents and have often thought of them WRT our history (I too am in the US), however, do you think they are cognizant that the sooner they settle down, the sooner we leave? Do you think that is actually the case (I have cause for some doubts about that, but I like to think that is King George Jr.'s goal), that as soon as the insurgents stop killing people daily, we will pull out our troops (well, okay, I would be foolish to think we wouldn't leave behind bases, we do that everywhere to make sure we can stick our noses in places they don't belong)? Sorry for an incredibly off topic post, but I am curious about your thinking on these matters.
I took his every two day average to be 8 cans, in the middle of his estimate, not the minimum listed 5 cans/two days. My first reaction to the post was holy cow, this dude must be HUGE, then saw that it was the unleaded version but figured I would point out how quickly the calories add up with cola consumption (something the parents in my city don't seem to understand as I watch their 100+ pound 3-4 year olds ride around in their strollers with a bag of Cheetos and 20 oz bottle of Big Red).
After switching to Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper (aka Liquid Crack) I was heading for 5 to 6 20oz bottles a day (at work) plus 5 to 10 12oz cans every two days (at home).
Let's see here, 100 ounces at work, plus another 48 ounces at home, on average, every day. That's over 1 gallon of soda a day! How often did you have to go to the bathroom? They are working hard to get people to drink just over half a gallon of water a day, and here you are more than doubling that in soda, I take it moderation isn't (wasn't) your strong suit? Imagine if that had been the fully leaded version, you would have had over 1800 calories a day in colas alone (Dr. Pepper (my liquid crack) is 150 cal/12 ounce can, I'm fairly sure the Cherry Vanilla has even more, but can't swear to it)! That's most adults' daily allowance (at least, that's what my wife (MD) keeps telling me).
I can relate to the compulsion to always have a drink on hand, after kidney stones at a young age, my doctor told me I basically was constantly dehydrated -> stones. Now I have my water cup at work, and drink over a gallon at work a day. Happily, it has been 4 years since my last stone, my fingers are crossed there won't be another!
I just downloaded and installed it on FC4, via their shell script, and it has a GUI that works just fine.
That's what happened to me at home as well (over dialup), but here at the office, no joy. I posted to the forum, had something like 50 views in a couple days, still have zero replies (after over 120 views and 55 days). They have no support, which I guess is understandable, but at the same time, it seems a shame to know there are probably a lot of resources not being used.
I tried running the software but I found that it caused localized warming especially around my CPU.
At least you got the software to actually work. For some reason that no one seems to care about on the forums, my machine can't talk to their servers. I am running FC4 at work on a machine I am required to keep up, and would love to run this stuff (any BOINC project) since it will be running when I am not around, but can't. At home, no problem, but at home, the machine is off. Right next to the FC4 machine, an XP machine, no problem. WTF? I see other people's posts on the forums that look like mine, but no one has an answer, very annoying.
It is amazing to me that the only comments I am seeing are WRT Apple and not the technology. Isn't this still supposed to be a geekful place? Anyway, I am not sure how this is news, the "article" (better described as a press release in my mind) describes strained SOI, or what AMD is using and has been using for quite some time. Why is this news?
Not true as of Jan 27th, 2003. From the link:
Iraq has declared that it only produced VX on a pilot scale, just a few tonnes and that the quality was poor and the product unstable.
Indeed, even one of the documents provided by Iraq indicates that the purity of the agent, at least in laboratory production, was higher than declared.

Other than the documented inventories following the first war that were unaccounted for, there was no conclusive evidence of new weapons. Apparently, there was enough evidence to convince a lot of people they (new weapons or at least the programs to develop/build them) existed though, including John Kerry, Bill and Hilary Clinton, Pelosi, Albright, Sandy Berger, Al Gore, Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid, John Edwards, Dick Gephardt, and Tony Blair.
I am still waiting for someone to show me anyone who said Iraq did not have these weapons before the invasion. I am beginning to believe it will never occur because approximately zero people believed it prior to the invasion.

Actually I think that the bigger the dick the closer it is to the arsehole. I'm sorry if you have a small dick :)
Obviously, you are missing the scale here...there's a reason one of my thighs always appears thicker than the other one....

Last time I checked, so are dicks.
You must be female....mine is a whole lot farther away than that (hardly anyone would suggest the base is the location, no?).

Maybe if you had read the entire article instead of just the headline, you would have figured that out.
I hate getting into a bitch-fest here, but maybe if you had read the entire title of the post you were replying to:
Talk about a slanted summary
you would see that that was entirely not what the poster was talking about.

Latency and shot to shot. Every consumer level di[g]ital camera I have tried so far was incredibly slow compared to a cheap film camera.
That's why we just got a DSLR, the kids got too fast for the old Cybershot, which takes nice pictures, but long after the action is done.
Why should anyone care whose gay and whose not, gamer or not?
Couldn't agree more, just tried to keep it sort of on topic.
