Well, duh. There's generally not any riots when a convenience store clerk is killed (in similar manner, I might add). Why? Who are you going to riot against? Is a cop being shot more terrible than the night-shift guy at 7-11?
Being a cop is not just a guy with a bad, blue uniform, and a job. They're a representative of government authority, with more power than the average citizen. When they start popping off citizens, they're display a form of OPPRESSION. People aren't rioting because Bob X died, they're rioting because a representative of government authority whose job is to PROTECT citizens is instead OPPRESSING and KILLING them.

What's the gender-split on this? I've heard a few more cases of men living-like-pigs surround by pizza and big gulps but there are still lots of women who sink unhealthy amounts of time into WoW (also farmville) etc
So in other words, I expect neither Xena the warrior princess, nor a supermodel, but can expect decent hygiene and fitness/bodily-upkeep. Decent intelligence, and an interest in further learning. Good employability, with a good job and willingness to help foot the bills. Some interest in games, electronics, etc would be a plus, but otherwise just a willingness to put up with my odd hobbies.
Now... good luck finding it. Yes, there are those that fit said profile, but the reality is that most women are just as shallow as the guys, just in different ways. For some reason, it's been found to be more socially acceptable... and expectations of men have gone up (just look at the body-types of male actors).
There's a huge backlash against female body-image, but frankly few people want a partner with a body like a dumpling and acne, and that applies to both genders. At the same time, somebody with an average build and decent attitude - who cleans up nicely - will do fine in most cases. Yeah, the guys with 6-packs and the women shaped like a bottle with double-D's get noticed, and they're probably going to be more visible in movies and pr0n, but that's all fantasy stuff.
The ones that are pushing the generally unrealistic body image? Well other than magazines/hollywood it's actually NOT the opposite sex. WOMEN are more likely to get catty and demean other women who don't manicure bi-weekly, dress in $100 clothes, and/or spend an hour putting on makeup. Similarly, MEN are more likely to harass other men for being too big, too small, or otherwise not spending 3 hours a day hitting the gym.
Seriously. Yes, women will notice a "hot" guy. Guys will notice a "hot" girl. But for 90% of us that's not what makes a perfect match, it's just something that attracts the eye might like any other form of window-dressing.
My wife is pretty good looking. Neither of us will be on a magazine but we both try to take care of ourselves. She doesn't make as much as me - though she has a high "level" of paper education it's not a great field - but she does have drive to improve. She has zero interest in games/electronics, but for the most part she leaves me my time so long as I do the same for her and we still have time together as well as keeping the house in order. She still notices hot guys (Chris Hemsworth seems to be a favorite), and I still notice hot girls, but we both recognise that it's just eye-candy.
Looking back historically though for both genders, I'd say that the rule runs both ways. Women tend to get treated like toys, and men tend to get treated like walking wallets. If you can, avoid those types of relationships but frankly it's still pretty common and rather painful to go through.
It's also because if you roll over, they screw you on the benefits. "Let go" becomes "quit" or "fired", which can impact unemployment payments, and they often also threaten your severance or even pension (if there is one).
This isn't going to do well for the stigma already suffered by ebola survivors. I believe that the survivors are generally thought to be immune to further infection as well, so it's a bit scary that the virus can still find repositories in the body where it can hang out for longer periods of time.
In many cases, you're probably goes to have a wheel that is better at some things, possible worse at others, and fails completely in situations you hadn't though of that the original wheel has already gone through:-)
The trade-off being that your older workers may not NEED to knock their brain out with late hours in order to solve many of the same issues. Plenty of stuff I spend *hours* figuring out in the past I now know how to do in minutes.
Re-inventing the wheel tends to come with two big issues a) You didn't need to do it, somebody already did but you lacked the knowledge of existing methods/utilities. Time wasted b) You decided to invent your own wheel anyways, because in your opinion it's "better". You then miss a bunch of bugs that have been fixed since the invention of the original wheel. Your wheel turns faster, but falls off the wagon on the first pothole.

I have to admit that it's well written, though the thought of a "bell curve of average testicular temperature" did make me giggle internally a bit. I suppose at some time a group of scientists had to have mapped that out, but I wonder what the sample diversity was.Google actually comes with up an an interesting article regarding the curve of temperature in rat scrotums (wider ranging than humans by quite a lot, but then rats are fairly large in that area) and the thermal receptors therein

I saw one mock-up where a phone-type screen was projected onto the wrist of the wearer. That might be a bit much, but perhaps something like this with a basic keyboard - projected onto the wrist/arm - might be doable.

IF you're hiring contractors from a respectable/knowledgeable company, why the F*** would you need to train them. This is what happens when they bring in a company that is *cheap* to clean out existing staff.
I didn't see any note in the article as to what company was supplying the H1-B workers. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a shell created specifically for/by Disney.

The latter seems to be popular, these days, then they can say "well, we didn't hire foreign workers, we're just contracting the work to EvilCorp which happens to have mostly H1-B's as employees"
Yeah, so basically because the administration wouldn't give him a pass to drop the bad students, he said "fuck it, I'm taking my ball home" and tried to fail and screw over everyone (including the good students) so that he didn't have to teach the class anymore.

It also depends on how saturated the existing connection is. IF in the unlikely scenario the guy is already near tapping out his existing 50mbps connection, then adding another 20mbps could improve netflix streaming. For all we know the guy likes to stream netflix while downloading 10 torrents, Steam updates and large ISO files.
I guess it depends where you live. In Vancouver BC, Canada, they redid a large portion of the huge portion of the highway/bridge and added a long HOV lane. The last time I went through there were still plenty of jackasses using it as a passing lane etc despite only having one person in the vehicle
So what's the pay scale on "societally meaningful" engineering jobs, because if it's not the same (and quite likely it isn't) we'll just be back to the whole "but it's not equal pay" argument.
The fact is that many "better feeling" jobs tend to come at a cost in regards to monetary compensation. So if Marshall Eriksen is going to work at a soulless lawyer firm as a shark for hire, he's going to make more money. But if Marshall Eriksen is going to work in the legal department of an environmental protection company, the pay may not be quite as good.
Similarly, if Jane Doe wants to work at a firm that does the engineering for creating oil rigs, good pay. But if she's building aquifers in Africa or something similar, the pay might be good but not "as good".
But... I bet a lot of comparisons will say "look at how Jane Doe, is making less money as an engineer (at eco-engineering inc) than John Smith, also an engineer (at drill-baby-driill inc)"
This is pretty much a university level prof acting like a High School teacher. A good portion (but not all) of the class was misbehaving, so he failed the lot of them.
That's like "Billy did X so you're all staying in at lunch." That shit wasn't fair in Elementary/Secondary school, and it's sure as hell not acceptable in a venue where students have paid to take the course. Fail the bad students, but don't shit on the ones that were there to learn and not causing issues.
