"1. Do it yourself. Know how to do all of this stuff as good or better than the service provider (and fake like you're an idiot customer with the spare Wintel box next to your connection for when you have to demonstrate the service provider has a problem)."
I like this option. I uninstalled the software that was installed on my PC by the installer guy.
Oh yeah, the guy installing my software refused to setup(nor new how to setup) email on anything other than Outlook Express(Which I refuse to use!). I let him do it and then copied the settings to my own email software after he left.
Businesses use filters because maybe they want their empolyees to work on what they pay them for and not to be looking at pornography on company time....consider that for a minute.
Schools are in a similar situation. They want kids doing school-work and not accessing adult material instead of learning.
I admit there are major flaws in most filtering systems such as inadvertantly blocking research topics but in many ways these filters are necessary in some form.
I am very hesitant to buy war3 after the bnetd debacle. Another similar service, fsgs.net, was also chased away for the same reasons. I only used those services because battle.net is always so laggy. Even in starcraft games between 2 cable modem users, it can get laggy. I can only imagine what war3 games would be like in peak hours...
This is right on! Until politicians in this country have the guts to stand up and actually take a risk for what is right, our freedoms will continue to be eroded in this fashion. Laws like this do nothing to slow down criminals, they only interfere in the lives of law-abiding citizens.
Actually yes. I work in the public schools system doing networking and maintenance/repair of computers...we have older mac's still running 8.6 because they cannot handle 9.x...
