You're not far from the truth. Formula-1 USED TO MEAN the simplest of all regulations: no restrictions, just go win. Things have gotten stricter and stricter and now it doesn't mean the same. There are other formula feeder-series, like Formula 2 (spec engine, all else open), Formula 3 (now Formula 3000) with a spec chassis and engine block but all else open) Formula Ford, and some other minor series with manufacturers' names attached.

Your post assums way too much regarding one's personal tastes. Therefore, I humbly request you disclaim your tirade with a little more humility.

The reason I make this statement is because of the nasty, NASTY turn your argument took in favor of "fluff." Your Ford/Ferrari statement was true, but the DeTomaso idea is wrong: the Pantera (and MOST DeTomasos) used a Ford engine (a 351C, to be exact). Ferraris are AWESOME cars to work on, but they require CONSTANT work, ergo the disappointment and lack-of-smiles-per-hour. I know this because I've owned one, an '82 400i with, you guessed it, a V12 engine.

Don't get into Ford's spanking of Ferrari in '66 until you take a look at what has happened SINCE: LOTS of Formula-1 cars have DROPPED the Ford Cosworth V8 in favor of a (gulp) Honda engine, yet Sauber managed to secure a deal getting last year's Ferrari engine. Hmm...

Bringing up McLaren was a mistake. The F1 was a 3-year-only car, and it hasn't been made for 3 years. The NEW McLaren is rightfully a Mercedes, since the McLaren F1 cars use Benz (Ilmor) engines. The BMW V12 in the F1 was a proof of concept that REALLY exceeded expectations--the transmission is custom-designed for that car--no off-the-shelf drivetrain here!

Mentioning the Skyline in this post was extremely out of place and way too Fast & Furious. 'Nuff said.

The Caterham isn't a go-kart any more than your dick is a bologna sandwich. Its only real advantage (tiny tracks and autocrossing) takes a HUGE back seat to the cost-effectiveness of a Porsche 914 or even a Fiat X1/9, especially in terms of cost, driveability and parts availability--points you use to decry Ferrari in your post's opening!

The Ford transit is a lorry. Period. There's NOTHINg special about it, and it proves you like to name drop. Good for you--you bought the latest issue of EVO. The best lorries are an argument just like your car argument, and the only lorry to pop up on this side of the Atlantic is the Freightliner Sprinter, actually a Mercedes V-class rebadged with Freighliner logos. Don't believe me? Check their website.

I own a Porsche, and there's no way in hell I can drive it every day. No way in hell. It's an AWESOME box to flog on weekends and dates, but not commuting more than 10 miles every day. For that, I have an S-class.

We own 2 Mercedes, and they are hands-down the easiest cars to do ANYTHING on, and there's not much to do. First car I've ever owned where an oil change could be done standing up and oil didn't drip all over the place.

Yawning over a Ferrari is akin to masturbating yourself limp: what the hell is wrong with you? Might I humbly suggest you open your mind a bit, close your mouth, and quit acting like the advertisement fodder Corporate Automobilia has fed you for the last 25 years and pick out the good things, ignore the bad and don't waste your breath commenting about things you don't have personal experience with. My guess is that you'll find a LOT more people that agree with you and want to be your friend. JUST ENJOY.

I've gotta tell you though: it takes a lot to get me to bash-back on people, but this post was really deserving. You don't know what you're talking about, and your personal experience lacks most--if not all--of the makes and models you mention. Might I humbly suggest you stick to counting polygons and playing with yor Pokemon cards and leave That Which You Don't Know in someone else's inbox?
