  1. Re:Why Boycott all of RIAA? on Would a Boycott of the MPAA/RIAA Help Matters? · · Score: 2

Not at all. I don't care how independent minded Rigthtious Babe Records or Fat Wreck Chords are if they can't stick to a set of principles.

You can't call youself independent, the little guy, fighting for fans etcetera if you're a member of the RIAA. By giving your money to one of these 'independent' lables, your giving money to the RIAA, and (perhaps worse) paying Hil's salary. You see a label under which your favorite artist releases his/her recordings on the RIAA list? Don't buy their music, it's that simple. If you want to pay the artist somehow, send them a cheque directly, or go see their live show.

Fight the RIAA and it's MBA monkeys TODAY!!!!!

  2. From the desk of Hilary Rosen on Would a Boycott of the MPAA/RIAA Help Matters? · · Score: 2

No black flags with skull and crossbones, no cutlasses, cannons, or daggers identify today's pirates. You can't see them coming; there's no warning shot across your bow. Yet rest assured the pirates are out there because today there is plenty of gold (and platinum and diamonds) to be had. Today's pirates operate not on the high seas but on the Internet, in illegal CD factories, distribution centers, and on the street. The pirate's credo is still the same--why pay for it when it's so easy to steal? The credo is as wrong as it ever was. Stealing is still illegal, unethical, and all too frequent in today's digital age. That is why RIAA continues to fight music piracy.

Well shiver me timbers :). Such quotes and more can be found on the The Funnest Place on the Net

Movies: Only attend matinees, if you MUST see it in a theatre.

I don't know. I think movies are the only thing you should really see. Movies which run at 7-10 bucks are all in all a good value for the money. I don't feel ripped off if I go see a good movie at that price. Anyway, keep in mind that these movies cost often over 1.00E+8 dollars to make. It's reasonable for MPAA members to expect a healty 5 or 10 percent profit on they're effort.

It's buying the DVD, the tee-shirt, the action figures, the pop-corn, the lingere (hehe.... ok maybe goign a bit too far) thats where the rip off is, as the cost to product such spinoffs is almost noexistant, and profit can go up into rediculous amonts 30,40,50%... the sky's the limit really.

YOu want a boycott? Sure, but hit the where they're ripping you off, stop buying LOTR collectors edition DVDs and star wars for 30-40 bucks a pop.

No, thats not what I look for in a star trek movie. I look for a good, engaging plot featuring characters I love. I'm not looking for cowboy Jean-Luc riding around in a dune buggie shooting at baddies; I'm not interest in action. This movie started out with great potential and then wound down to crap in a mear 1/2 an hour. The movie just dragged on for the last hour into meaninglessness. It was a waste of my time. For those of you who haven't seen it heres a plot breakdown:

JL: Great job getting married guys, and Riker looks like you've finally become a star ship capitan, good for you!

    -- cut to bridge --

JL: Yay, we're on the way to batazed, hopefully you guys are all ready for a naked wedding!

Worf: I can't get naked, that would not be honerable

JL: Yeah well, you have to anyway

    Worf: OK!

Georgi: looks like we have some posotronic signals on the sensors

JL: Great lets go check it out!

Riker: But what about my wedding.

JL: Oh yeah, we'll do that too I guess.

--- time passes, arrive at planet ---

JL: I'm gonna go dune buggying now!

    Riker: YAY!!!!

    --- cut to surface

JL: Shit, theres people shootign at as!

    Worf: Let me shoot back

Severed Head: Hello, how are you, I'm a severd head!

    --- cut to ready room

    JL: YAY!!!!!

    I found this gem today:
    • To: Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema

Those of us who have seen The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring know what an amazing director Peter Jackson is. When I learned that there apparently was to be a sequel, I was overjoyed. However, Peter Jackson has decided to tastelessly name the sequel "The Two Towers". The title is clearly meant to refer to the attacks on the World Trade Center. In this post-September 11 world, it is unforgiveable that this should be allowed to happen. The idea is both offensive and morally repugnant. Hopefully, when Peter Jackson and, more importantly, New Line Cinema see the number of signatures on this petition, the title will be changed to something a little more sensitive.

      Sincerely,

      The Undersigned

  18. All about the suspense?!? on Psst! Eight Bits Gets You "The Two Towers" In China · · Score: 5, Insightful

    Dude, read the book....

Suspense is sitting at the edge of your seat wondering whats going to happen next. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but I think most people reading slashdot are going in to these movies knowing more or less whats goign to happen. The suspense factor just isn't going to be there.

I think the exciting part about seeing these movies is comparing how the movie compares to what the story looked like in your own imagination. Just as an example, I pictured the great river as a river as wide as the Columbia, winding through a dry wasteland. In the movie it was portrayed in an entirely different way. Thats what excited me, to see what another person imagined the story to be like.

I think if your watching the movies for the suspense, do yourself a favor and read the book. Sometimes knowing whats going to happen is even better.
