GPL does not transfer copyright, it allows the licensee the right to distribute under certain conditions. This is not transfer of copyright, the original developer retains copyright on everything he/she writes unless they specifically transfer copyright to another.
I don't think it is a bad analogy, sure this may not end in the creation of a new nation based on the concepts of equality and freedom but destined to become just like the rest, however it's the same mindset. We built it, so therefore we have total control over it and everybody else can fuck off and die. This was the attitude of the British in colonial america and it's the same attitude that comes from all of those "The US built it so we can ignore everyone else" type commments.
The US only entered World War 1 after Germany decided to resume unrestricted submarine operations against the convoy fleets as well as the Zimmerman Telegram trying to incite Mexican action against the US. Perfect examples of what I am talking about.
As to the second world war, again the US was content to let the Europeans fight it out, supplying arms to the Brits but nothing more, that is until the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour. If the Japanese had not declared war, Germany wouldn't have and the US would have remained a supplier of materials rather than an active combatant.
Okay let's just get one thing clear, I am talking about the "Thirteen Colonies" the original british colonies, that later on formed the core the new United States. I am not talking about Columbus who arguably was the second European to reach the new world.
If the Japanese hadn't attacked Pearl Harbour, then there is a good chance that we'd still be talking German and missing the Jews. This is my point, in both world wars, the US did not get involved until their own interests were at risk, otherwise they would have quite happily let Europe fall apart.
And since the end of World War 2, the US has declared itself "Leader of the Free World" fought many wars, demanding that others support it and has actively worked to place itself at the center of the world trade and financial networks, thus in the words of the tales "demandinf that Pierre and Wolfgang call him boss".
I think you'll find that the colonists were Brits and considered themselves British. Also each colony was setup under british rule, so yes the Brits built the 13 colonies.
Sometimes Pierre and Wolfgang would get into terrible fights and Bob would row across the lake, split them apart, force them to make up, and then dutifully clean up the mess the fight had made. Then he'd make sure they were comfortable and fed, and row back to his farm on his side of the lake.
Slight edit here, lets try this: "Sometimes Pierre and Wolfgang would get into terrible fights and Bob would sit on the other side of the lake and watch thinking "it's none of my business, let them fight it out themselves" up until the point where the fight would threaten Bobs property, then Bob would get all angry and stomp up and down. Then once everything had settled down Bob would strut around and demand that Pierre and Wolfgang call him boss. If they didn't he would drag up the old times where he stomped around and stopped them fighting to claim that they had to follow him because he had stopped the fighting oh so long ago".
I am curious, in your post you mention compatibility as an issue when looking at audio apps. Unless you are using some really obscure format when working with your projects I think you'll find that even the most basic linux audio editor can support the major file formats.
The Europeans wouldn't have access to websites like Slashdot, which in my mind would probably be preferable.
Ah I see you follow the "They're different, therefor we shouldn't have to listen to them" school of thought.
On the question of the world surviving being cut off from the US, which do you think would crumble first, the world economy with several emerging economic super powers - China being the largest, or the US, a nation that has made itself totally dependant on imports. Already there are conflicts over basics such as Oil and in the future this is just going to grow as China and India begin to throw their economic weight around.
Bullshit, the "Internet" stopped being American military property with the first off-shore connection to a non US military installation. Believe it or not other countries have contributed plenty to the development of the network including the development of the WWW which was a European invention NOT American.
Here's something to think about, the Internet as it stands now can survive without the US(redundant network remember) however, can the US survive without the Internet?
See this is what happens when you don't have a handy native to pull over and ask what the landmark is called. For those who don't know here's a quote from Terry Pratchetts "Light Fantastic"
The forest of Skund was indeed enchanted, which was nothing unusual on the Disc, and was also the only forest in the whole universe to be called -- in the local language -- Your Finger You Fool, which was the literal meaning of the word Skund.
The reason for this is regrettably all too common. When the first explorers from the warm lands around the Circle Sea travelled into the chilly hinterland they filled in the blank spaces on their maps by grabbing the nearest native, pointing at some distant landmark, speaking very clearly in a loud voice, and writing down whatever the bemused man told them. Thus were immortalised in generations of atlases such geographical oddities as Just A Mountain, I Don't Know, What? and, of course, Your Finger You Fool.
Now if webmasters had been around as long as authors, and were organized to protect their interests, the engines would have never gotten this far with their illegal crawling for profit.
Yes and the web as we know it would not exist. Just remember that the relationship between search engines and web sites is a two way street, where the search engine gets content, the web site potentially gets traffic.
From my point of view, the set period really is the least of our worries. It's the moves to try and take away rights such as first sale and fair use that are more dangerous. Here in australia we do not have any fair use clause in our copyright laws, hence even making a copy of a CD we own for backup is a breach and thus makes us liable for full prosecution.
Film and Music producers have the same rights under copyright law as do authors, software developers and anyone else who produces art. This means that they retain control over their product/art for a set period of time (yes the set period is insane). It is this same law that allows the GPL and BSD licenses to operate.
The consumer has certain rights as well - Fair Use, First sale doctrines etc, etc. However the consumer also must abide by certain rules, including not distributing the art without permission from the copyright owner.
So blaming the especially strong hurricane season on global warming is a bit like blaming your father for the kind of person you've turned out to be. It might make you feel better, but it won't help with the actual problem--that you're a deadbeat drunk and you beat your kids.
Maybe but it also gives you a good place to start if you ever want to actually make yourself better.
It's completely irrelevant whether global warming is a cause for the increase in hurricanes or not. If it is, then there's nothing we can do to help the problem in the short term--even if we reduced human contributions to global warming to 0, it would still take many years for the damage done already to dissipate
Every journey begins with a single step. It's no use saying it'll take to long to fix so lets just concentrate on the symptoms and forget the cure.
Understanding the changing weather systems brought about by global warming gives us a better understanding of how major events like this are going to happen.
It's not the terrorists I'm worried about, considering nuking a city to take out one or two guys is a pretty dumb idea (Quick, there's a terrorist cell in LA/New York/Detroit Nuke the fuckers!). It's the fact that as America leads others will follow. If the US decides it needs to beef up its Nuclear Arsenal, others will decide they need to do the same, hence the new arms race.
The alternative would be not to shove your nukes in everyones faces. I think it was Theodore Roosevelt who said it best, "Speak softly, but carry a big stick". At the moment it seems to be all stick.
The problem with this whole idea is that it is going to hasten the creation of another arms race. No country in the world is going to feel that they are safe without comparable weapons, India and Pakistan are already nuclear powers, Iran is on the way and North Korea has been waving theirs about for the last three or four years.

And what if there had been no incident? What if the Japanese had recognised that annoying the "Sleeping Giant" was a Bad Idea?

For those who are having a little trouble with their history here's a link

Let's have a look, the Brits created the 13 colonies, why should they be willing to give up control over it?

Great so you going to nuke the whole world?

I have a friend who spouts off every time a woman looks at him in a bar.
Has he seen a specialist about that? There are treatments available now you know
What sort of programmes were you trying to install and what were the results you were getting back?
